Cops on Swanky Rodeo Drive Arrested 90 People in Two Months. Eighty Were Black.
REUTERSThe Beverly Hills Police Department has been accused of racial profiling along Rodeo Drive, with new records showing Black people have been disproportionately arrested in the famed luxury shopping district.“The demographics show that there are not many Black people who live in Beverly Hills,” civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is overseeing a lawsuit against the city and members of the department, said at a press conference last month. “You had to be intentional to try to arrest those many Black people in Beverly Hills.”Records obtained by the Los Angeles Times showed that 90 people were arrested by a special unit within the department, dubbed the Rodeo Drive Team, in the two months after its creation in summer 2020. Of the 90 arrested, an eye-popping 80 were Black. Police have yet to explain why Black people have been disproportionately apprehended.Read more at The Daily Beast.

‘Corrupted’: College Board Ditches Pro-Mask Prez, Taps Wrestling Coach Instead
YouTube/North Idaho CollegeA community college board in northern Idaho has been torn asunder after a wrestling coach with no apparent experience in running schools was appointed interim president weeks after its pro-mask mandate president was fired. The North Idaho College Board of Trustees booted Rick MacLennan during a September meeting, after repeatedly delaying a vote to renew his contract and a weeks-long bitter dispute over whether or not masks should be required on campus to protect the staff and students. When he announced the mask mandate before the start of classes, MacLennan framed it as “not the least bit desirable” but a necessary effort supported by health guidance that “improves our chances of being able to stay open this fall.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Roy Wood Jr. Takes on Leonardo DiCaprio’s ‘N-Word’ Acting in First Look at New Special
Sean Gallagher / Comedy CentralWhen Roy Wood Jr. appeared on The Last Laugh podcast earlier this year, he teased that he would be “closing the window” between taping and air for his next stand-up special. Inspired by the fast turnaround of Dave Chappelle’s 8:46 set, he was eager to get his new hour out into the world with as little delay as possible. Now, he’s done it, filming Imperfect Messenger at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood, Colorado, less than two weeks before it’s set to premiere on Comedy Central this Friday, October 29th at 10:30 p.m.And the longtime Daily Show correspondent includes plenty of material about current events in the new hour. But in this exclusive first look at the special, he looks back at Django Unchained and other films that have found white movie stars in the unenviable position of having to scream the “n-word” at their Black co-stars.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Ted Cruz Defends Parents Doing Nazi Salutes at School Board Meetings
Fox NewsDuring a fiery Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at one point defended parents throwing up Nazi salutes at school board meetings.Cruz, along with other Republicans, lambasted Attorney General Merrick Garland for directing the Justice Department this month to investigate the rise in violent threats against educators. That rise has coincided with right-wing media fueling fury over mask mandates and so-called critical race theory.Referencing a letter written by the National School Boards Association, Cruz asserted that many of the examples of threats the NSBA cited were “non-violent,” adding that one instance involved school board meeting attendees doing fascist gestures.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Can Anyone Convince Queen Elizabeth to Step Down?
Sean Gallup/GettyAs messages go, those coming out of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle over the past seven days have been decidedly mixed. On Wednesday last week, the “knackered” queen cancelled an extremely important trip to Northern Ireland at the last minute and was dramatically admitted to hospital (a fact which her aides tried and failed to cover up). She then missed church on Sunday and has failed to even walk her beloved dogs for the past week as she rested up in the wake of the mystery health situation. On Tuesday, things became really surreal; all morning her aides insisted there was no change to her scheduled keynote attendance at the Cop26 climate summit which begins on Monday 1 November.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Top Boston Doc Prepped ER Patient for Surgery, Then Fell Asleep in His Car
Wikimedia CommonsMassachusetts state regulators have fined a top Boston doctor $5,000 after a 2016 incident in which he went to his car, ate something, then fell asleep—all while a patient waited on an emergency room operating table for ankle surgery.Dr. Tony Tannoury, the head of spine surgery at Boston Medical Center, admitted to the state’s Board of Registration in Medicine that he missed the surgery, intending to eat something while the patient was being prepped before eventually knocking out in his car. The episode was reported two months later to the state board, executive director George Zachos told The Boston Globe, resulting in an investigation.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Meghan McCain Cuts Ties With Lindsey Graham: He’s ‘Not’ a ‘Member of My Family’
NICHOLAS KAMMMeghan McCain dramatically kicked Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) to the curb on Wednesday, publicly declaring that the man she once affectionately referred to as an “uncle” is not a “member of my family” and “hasn’t been for a very long time.”For years now, Graham has tried to reconcile his close relationship with the late Sen. John McCain and his undying loyalty to disgraced former President Donald Trump, who notoriously attacked McCain and derided the Vietnam POW’s war record—even in death. While Meghan McCain previously said that she refuses to “talk crap” about Graham, despite his “questionable” actions, this week appeared to be the final straw for the former View host.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyActor Jim Caviezel stepped up his embrace of the QAnon conspiracy theory last weekend, appearing at a casino-themed QAnon convention called the “Patriot Double Down” in Las Vegas to deliver a speech drenched in religious and QAnon references. In what had been billed to QAnon believers as a historic event, the actor best known for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ reenacted a speech from Braveheart, then urged the audience to send “Lucifer and his henchmen straight back to hell.”"The storm is upon us,” Caviezel said, alluding to a QAnon slogan about an impending fascist takeover led by Donald Trump.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Speaking to CNN, Hissah Al-Muzaini, whose father Saad Aljabri told CBS News’ 60 Minutes that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was a “psychopath” who wanted to get a poison ring from Russia to kill King Abdullah, said she was also a target. Who Messed Up Devin Nunes’ Campaign Records This Bad? His Mom.
Photo Illustration by Kelly Caminero/The Daily Beast/GettyThis spring, after receiving a number of federal warnings about a series of accounting errors, the campaign committee for Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) embarked on a financial reckoning. As a result of that reckoning, the campaign has now had to correct a slew of reports, and two of Nunes’ affiliated committees removed his treasurer—his mom—as their government contact. But over the last few months, Nunes’ mother, Toni Nunes, has filed a confounding series of financial disclosures. The reports attempt to correct an array of accounting errors and oversights, some dating back to 2004, and because the errors carry over from one accounting period to the next, all subsequent filings were also incorrect—meaning the California Republican’s books have been off for 17 years.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Why Do We Keep Exploiting Dead Celebrities?
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyA limited series about Joan Rivers has stirred controversy once again. When news first broke of the project last month, discussion emerged about casting Kathryn Hahn, who is not Jewish, to play the legendary comedian. Now the project has been canceled, Variety reports, after its producers failed to secure its subject’s life rights, held by Rivers’ daughter Melissa.Lifetime’s vast selection of unauthorized biographies demonstrates that one does not necessarily need permission from one’s subject to go forward with a production. But as Variety points out, Joan Rivers’ jokes and catchphrases—recognizable markers of her brand as a comedian—would have been off the table without her life rights. And that’s putting aside the possibility of getting sued. It’s unclear what stage of production The Comeback Girl reached before someone pulled the plug, but they got at least as far as the logline: “Trailblazer. Adored. Cruel. Diva. Joan Rivers had a life like no other. At age 54, she was a superstar comedienne… and then it all fell apart. THE COMEBACK GIRL is the awe-inspiring untold story of how Joan Rivers persevered through near suicide and professional abyss to rebuild herself and her career to become a global icon.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

This Dream Vacation Hotspot Is Spiraling Into a Deadly Cartel Battlefield
DANIEL SLIM/AFP via Getty ImagesTwo foreign female tourists were caught in a crossfire between rival crime groups and shot to death last Thursday in the high-end resort town of Tulum, Mexico. Three other people were also wounded when the firefight broke out in the popular restaurant, La Malquerida, not far from the beach. Of the two women who were killed, one was from Germany and the other India.“They were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and got caught in an exchange of gunfire between competing drug traffickers,” said a high-ranking Mexican police commander, who agreed to speak with The Daily Beast on the condition of anonymity.“It’s a sad mistake for the victims, but such cases are not rare or unusual anymore [in and around Tulum]. Arizona Is the Viral Breeding Ground of Republican Sickness
Photo Illustration by Kristen Hazzard/The Daily Beast/GettyIf you want to understand how the GOP will subvert democracy to achieve minority power for white Christian supremacy, you need to pay attention to Arizona, which has emerged as a fecund laboratory for the radicalized, weaponized death cult spanning the A to Z from assholes to zealots. That might seem hyperbolic in light of President Biden’s historic win, becoming only the second Democrat to take Arizona’s 11 electoral votes since 1948, and the election of two Democratic senators—former astronaut Mark Kelly and Kyrsten Sinema, who at the time of this article is apparently still a Democrat in Denim despite obstructing her party’s ambitious agenda. However, look a little closer, and you’ll see the ideological tiki-torchbearers of former senator and life-long racist Barry Goldwater, seeking to burn our democratic norms down to the ground. Goldwater was the godfather of “the Southern Strategy” that successfully manipulated white rage and white anxiety over civil rights progress and feminism to win over white voters. The strategy, refined by Nixon, perfected by Reagan, and fully radicalized and realized by Trump, also courts white evangelical Christians, seeks to destroy social welfare programs, and is now aggressively paving the way for Trumpism and authoritarian rule.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Prentice Penny Reflects on the End of ‘Insecure,’ Spin-Off Talk, and an Upcoming Western Episode
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/GettyLast Sunday, HBO’s hit dramedy Insecure began its ascension to TV’s sweet hereafter. It’s been a long journey from broken pussies and freestyle rappin’ at Issa’s L.A. flat and these characters know it. “What would you do if you knew everything was coming to an end?” Kelli (Natasha Rothwell) coos into her podcast microphone.Earlier in its fifth season premiere, Kelli learns that the organizers of their Stanford alumni reunion have mistook her for dead, and while Kelli is usually seen as a foil to the seriousness of her circle, she seemed to take it really hard. She contemplates her legacy—how she’s seen and how she’s lived her life thus far. They’re big questions that the show’s been wrestling with for its entire celebrated run, but the showrunner’s hardly wanted us to feel like anything is actually final. What is a finale but a moment in time where one chapter ends and another begins?Prentice Penny, who has served as producer, writer and showrunner of Insecure, is quite optimistic about the show’s meaning both within and outside the tube. These sorts of conversations about where a show will end up fascinate Penny up to a point, but his is a more sobering read: “Our show is birthed out of shows like Living Single and Girlfriends. They’re complements. They’re ancestors to this. So I’m excited to see what will be inspired by our show.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Sean Hannity Really Wants to Make MAGA Rappers ‘Cool’
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/GettySean Hannity and other right-wing types are in a gleeful tizzy over a song from rapper Bryson Grey, which contains some anti-vax lyrics and the phrase “Let’s Go Brandon,” a tortured MAGA inside joke that basically means “Fuck Biden.” The tune is part of a growing oeuvre of pro-Trump songs that take aim at the right’s favorite pandemic-era bogeymen, including the Democratic president, vaccine mandates, and the country of Australia (because of its strict COVID-era lockdown policies).Grey’s song also features homophobic lyrics and is just generally pretty ugly; that hasn’t stopped Hannity from plugging it, twice, on his Twitter feed.“My timeline is just filled with these MAGA rappers,” Fever Dreams co-host Will Sommer discloses on this week’s episode of the podcast.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Biden’s White House Worries: Will Dems Take ‘Yes’ for an Answer?
ANDREW CABALLERO-REYNOLDS/AFP via Getty ImagesOn the verge of another historic success in a year full of them, Democrats across Washington are already worrying about how they may squander it.The president, the speaker of the House, the Senate majority leader and their teams may be days away from passing transformative legislation that will invest trillions in the U.S. economy. They may well, after months of ugly legislative sausage-making, overcome GOP obstructionism, internal divisions, and media narratives that always seem to emphasize the cloud around every silver lining produced by the White House. The Build Back Better and infrastructure packages would be capstones to a year of extraordinary accomplishments. And yet, in private, many Democrats are fretting they still may snatch defeat from the jaws of landmark victories. White House and Capitol Hill hands fear that, even with the passage of the Build Back Better bill and the bipartisan infrastructure bill, Dems will either fail to frame their achievements in a way that resonates with average Americans or let their frustrations about what has yet to be achieved undercut the benefits that should accrue to them for what has been.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Dems Have to Choose on Gerrymandering: the High Road or More Seats
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyAs states begin to cement their congressional maps for the next decade, Democrats have a choice. They can take the high road, operate as if their gerrymandering reforms had passed Congress, and try to draw fair lines that would accurately represent a state’s political composition. Or, with Republicans aiming to draw the most aggressively GOP-favorable maps possible in order to take back the House of Representatives, Democrats can play the same game. While Republicans have far more opportunities to gerrymander congressional districts and pick up seats, Democrats could temper those gains by wringing out as much of an advantage as possible in the states where they control the process—like in New York and Illinois.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Anti-Vaxxers Got $1 Million-Plus in Forgiven PPP Loans. Now Lawmakers Want Answers.
Go Nakamura/GettyA group of Democratic House members is demanding answers from the Small Business Administration following a The Daily Beast report that top anti-vaccine groups received more than $1 million in free cash through an initiative intended to help struggling entrepreneurs survive the pandemic. The Daily Beast received a missive that Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) sent SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman on Monday, questioning whether the half-dozen disinformation superspreaders—including supplement hawker Joseph Mercola and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.—who had Paycheck Protection Program loans absolved this year had fulfilled all the requirements of the program. These requirements, Sanchez noted, include refraining from political activity. The anti-inoculation activists maintained to The Daily Beast at the time of the original story that they were in complete compliance.“Several of these individuals and their organizations received loans in the first round of PPP availability while many small, family-owned businesses were unable to access the program,” wrote Sanchez. “Some groups—who continue to profit from COVID-19 and vaccine disinformation—have received taxpayer dollars to assist them in spreading misinformation that’s prolonging the pandemic, taking lives, and preventing small businesses from returning to normal.”Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Elizabeth Holmes Totally Fooled Betsy DeVos and Pumped Her Family For Millions, Says Witness
Alex Wong/Getty ImagesThe family of former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos invested nearly $100 million in Theranos after a marathon meeting with the biotech startup’s founder Elizabeth Holmes, a director of the billionaire’s family office testified on Tuesday.Lisa Peterson, who manages private equity investments for the DeVos clan’s RDV Corporation, told jurors at Holmes’ California wire fraud trial that she and members of the Michigan-based dynasty flew to Silicon Valley in 2014 to meet Holmes and Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, the company’s former president and Holmes’ ex-boyfriend.Peterson testified that Holmes was “hand picking” uber-wealthy families to invest in the Palo Alto company, which claimed its portable blood-testing devices could screen for scores of diseases with just the prick of a patient’s finger. (But, according to federal prosecutors, Holmes and Balwani knew their technology didn’t work as advertised, even as they peddled it to consumers and high-powered investors.)Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? The BBC’s Ignorance About Trans Women and Sex Is Disgusting and Dangerous
Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesLet me just say this right up front: If you don’t want to have sex with me, a transgender woman, it’s very likely I feel the same way about you. And even if you do want to make love to me, or if I desire you, nothing we say or do can change my mind or yours, so long as we feel strongly opposed to becoming intimate, for whatever reason. Otherwise, that’s not sex, it’s rape. And rape is violence, not sex. We call this a matter of “consent,” and it’s not a new thing, just as being transgender is not, in fact, a new thing. This concept of consent, however, is entirely glossed over in BBC news reporter Caroline Lowbridge’s article, headlined “We’re being pressured into sex by some trans women.”“Some”? Wait, what? Who? How many is some? How many are “we”?Read more at The Daily Beast.

Entire Universe Dunks on Florida Surgeon General After Insane Mask Standoff
Paul Hennessy/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty ImagesFlorida’s top medical official is once again under fire for his stance on COVID-19 safety measures—this time for claiming a face mask limits his ability to communicate.Amid controversy over his refusal to wear a mask in a meeting last week with state Sen. Tina Polsky, Surgeon General Dr. Joseph Ladapo insisted in a Tuesday statement his decision to flout pandemic safety measures—despite the politician indicating she was sick—stemmed from his inability to “communicate clearly and effectively” with his face covered.“Having a conversation with someone while wearing a mask is not something I find productive, especially when other options exist,” Ladapo said. “It is important to me to communicate clearly and effectively with people. I can’t do that when half of my face is covered.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Forced Colonics, Weekly Weigh-Ins: Feds Detail Creepy Child Abuse in Kansas ‘Cult’
Faleh Kheiber/ReutersLeaders of a Nation of Islam offshoot that has been labeled a “cult,” separated children from their parents, held them incommunicado under highly restrictive conditions, and made them work up to 16 hours a day for no pay, according to a shocking indictment unsealed Tuesday in Kansas federal court. The 20-page filing accuses eight officials with the United Nation of Islam (UNOI)—a splinter group that in 1978 broke away from Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam—of conspiracy and forced labor. It includes a breathtaking array of additional allegations, claiming the group, among other things, denied the kids proper medical care, prohibited them from attending outside schools, and demanded some of them undergo colonics performed by adult members. The children, who were reportedly as young as 8, were often kept in “overcrowded dormitories or barracks,” which they were not allowed to leave, say prosecutors.“Conversely, the defendants and their immediate families typically resided in spacious accommodations, ate what they wanted, and worked at their own discretion,” the indictment states.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Huma Abedin Says Senator Sexually Assaulted Her After D.C. Dinner
Brendan McDermid/ReutersHuma Abedin writes in her forthcoming book that a U.S. senator sexually assaulted her in her 20s, kissing her unprompted and forcing his tongue in her mouth as the two conversed in his apartment. The longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, now 45, detailed the incident in her memoir Both/And, set to be published next week, according to an except obtained by the Guardian. Abedin withheld details of the senator’s identity like his party, whether he is still in Congress, and which state he represented.According to Abedin’s account, she and the senator met at a dinner attended by several other lawmakers and their aides in Washington, D.C., though not Clinton, who was New York’s senator and Abedin’s boss from 2001 until 2009. Following the meal, Abedin took a walk with the senator, who invited her into his apartment for coffee and, she wrote, “told me to make myself comfortable on the couch.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

I'm Simultaneously Cold and Sweaty So I Bought This Sweater
Photo: iStock/Scouted/SmartWool.Never in my life have I ever worn a sweater two full days in a row without it being a laundry emergency, and yet I am on day four of wearing the Smartwool Shadow Pine Colorblock Sweater. I fell in love with it recently and, while I maybe already have one or two sweaters, decided to make this one mine as a present for surviving the heat waves this summer.I wore it on the very first day it was below sixty degrees in the morning and was very impressed with the softness of the Merino wool, expecting the notoriously scratchy texture of your classic wool sweater (I have sensitive skin and don’t like a lot of clothing textures, but this one passed my comfort test). Merino wool is thinner and more breathable than other wool, too. Unlike cotton or synthetics, when you sweat in Merino, it transports sweat away from your body while also insulating. It also looks professional but not stuffy, too which makes me feel put together in Zoom meetings or while bopping around town.A huge win for me, though, was that it resists odors. Not only did it keep me from pitting out, but it also stayed smelling and looking fresh after several years, making it good for travel and for me being too lazy to do laundry until necessary. When I wash it, I lay it flat to dry and it looks good as new.Read more at The Daily Beast.
