What the Hell Is ‘Day X’? Far-Right Berserker Clan Was Prepping Uprising Across Several Cities, Police Say
Hannibal Hanschke via ReutersGerman police have averted an attack by ultra-right militants who were amassing deadly weapons to carry out “revenge full of horror” against German institutions on an as-yet-undefined “Day X.”More than 130 special-forces police in Germany searched 14 addresses in Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein, Baden-Württemberg, and Hesse on Wednesday tied to the extreme-right Berkserker Clan, according to the Berlin public prosecutors office.Among the weapons police are said to have confiscated were firearms, bomb timers, ammunition, knives, spears, and “devotional objects” the group used to prepare for their attack. Giesswein’s Ballerina Flats Are So Chic & Comfortable, You’d Never Know They Were Made From Recycled Plastic
Photo: Scouted/Giesswein.Eco-friendly companies like All Birds and Rothy's aren’t just becoming go-to shoe brands because of their commitment to sustainability. In fact, these forward-thinking, innovative companies are designing shoes that are so comfortable and fashionable, you’d never know they were made with sustainable materials like wool and recycled water bottles.Like these popular footwear brands, Giesswein's ballet flats (and all of their shoes, for that matter) are designed with the commitment to lessen their overall ecological footprint. The Austrian-based, family-owned footwear company uses materials like recycled ocean PET fabric – meaning plastic that has been recovered from the ocean – and Merino wool to create their footwear lineup, including the ever-adorable, super-stylish Eco Pointed Ballet Flats. The company’s flats come in two distinct style: a pointy and a round toe. I gravitated more toward the pointed toe because it looks more formal and dressed-up than the rounded toe, which I recommend for more casual, dressed-down days.Given how popular Rothy’s shoes have become, especially after Meghan Markle was spotted wearing them on several outings, it’s easy to compare Rothy’s and Giesswein. Both price-wise and design-wise, these two brands are very similar to each other; however, I find that the Giesswein’s flats are more comfortable overall, especially if you’re going to be on your feet all day long.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Mayor: All New York City Workers Must Get Vaccinated or Face Losing Their Jobs
Reuters/Brendan McDermidMayor Bill de Blasio has announced that he’ll enforce a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for every single New York City municipal employee—a sprawling workforce of more than 300,000 people—in a move that takes away the option for vaccine holdouts to undergo weekly testing in place of a shot.In his announcement Wednesday morning, the mayor confirmed that any city employee who fails to receive at least one shot of a coronavirus vaccine before the end of Friday, Oct. 29 will be placed on unpaid leave until they change their minds. However, every worker who does get a shot before next Friday’s 5 p.m. deadline will be rewarded with a $500 bonus.Speaking on Morning Joe, de Blasio said: “It’s a mandate now for all city agencies, all city workers—it’s time for everyone to get vaccinated. Our public employees are going to lead us out of the COVID era.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Queen Elizabeth ‘Reluctantly’ Accepts Doctors Orders to Rest: Buckingham Palace
ane Barlow/Pool via ReutersQueen Elizabeth has “reluctantly accepted medical advice” to rest for a few days, according to a surprise announcement from Buckingham Palace that added the queen’s undisclosed ailment is “not COVID related.”The statement announced the cancellation of the 95-year-old monarch’s long-planned trip to Northern Ireland. “Her Majesty is in good spirits and is disappointed that she will no longer be able to visit Northern Ireland, where she had been due to undertake a series of engagements today and tomorrow.”The queen, who has ruled over the United Kingdom for seven decades, just declined the dubious “Oldie of the Year” award offered by Oldie magazine, which said she sent a friendly letter. “Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such the Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept and hopes you find a more worthy recipient,” reads a letter from her private secretary Tom Laing-Baker to the magazine. Inside a Trump-Backed Candidate’s Leaky Audit Fiasco
Photo Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast/GettyOn the morning of Jan. 6, hours before rioters would break into the Capitol, another, quieter breach appeared to be underway.“I am publishing the Dominion audit raw data from Antrim County machines,” pro-Trump activist Joe Oltmann wrote in an email to a Newsmax correspondent. “Sitting with Matt DePerno and his information overlays this diagram.. perfectly.”This would not be the last time that apparent voting machine data from Antrim County, Michigan, was distributed through conservative conspiracy circles. Despite voting for Trump in the 2020 presidential election, the northern Michigan county has become central to election fraud conspiracy theories, including new efforts to “audit” Michigan’s election. At the heart of the audit efforts, and the Antrim County conspiracy theories, is Matthew DePerno, an attorney whose election theories have won him the endorsement of Donald Trump in Michigan’s upcoming attorney general race.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? When Tom Petty Was at the Height of His Musical Powers
Courtesy Robert SebreeIn the waning days of summer 2016, I received a call from Tom Petty’s office. They were in the early stages of planning an expanded edition of Wildflowers, his 1994 multi-platinum album—a career high point, even for an artist of Petty’s pedigree—and wanted to know if I would be willing to fly to Malibu to interview the legend about the period. The album hadn’t come together, but there were lots of amazing archival photos and even unseen footage from the recording sessions. A documentary about the making of the album was definitely in the cards.Obviously, that interview never happened. Not long after that initial call, I heard that a new plan was in place. Petty would be honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year ahead of the 2017 Grammy Awards, and a 40th anniversary tour, celebrating the Heartbreakers, Petty’s remarkable band throughout his long and illustrious career, would follow. Once that was complete, I was told Petty would be turning his sights to the expanded Wildflowers, and a tour, probably multiple nights at small theaters in major markets, would follow. We could then revisit the interview with Petty, as well as Wildflowers co-producers Rick Rubin and Mike Campbell, so “just be patient.”On Oct. 2, 2017, with his death in a Santa Monica hospital, the chance to sit down with one of the greatest songwriters of his generation to discuss the greatest artistic achievement of his career evaporated, along with so many other things that meant so much to all of us. This Is How Russia Is Pulling Off a Free-for-All Murderous Rampage
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Photos Getty ImagesABUJA, Nigeria—When Lamido Souleymane Daouda, mayor and sultan of the northwestern Central African Republic (CAR) town of Koui, was told by locals that they had seen a cache of weapons gathered by rebels in a nearby community early in June, he quickly reported it to security agencies. The highly respected Sultan Mayor, as Daouda is commonly referred to as, had expected officials to rush to the community and seize the weapons. But that’s not what happened.Rather, a group of Russian mercenaries allegedly stormed his home on June 12 and insisted he accompanied them to where the arms were kept, according to family eyewitnesses who spoke with The Daily Beast. The family members said that just before noon, Daouda, his assistant and bodyguard, left with the mercenaries and headed to the community, which was west of Koui. But when the Russians returned four hours later, none of the three men were with them. The mercenaries allegedly told Daouda's family that the three men were killed in a landmine explosion not far from the Sultan Mayor’s house, and that the rest of them were lucky to escape death.Read more at The Daily Beast.

White Texas Property Owner Avoids Arrest After Killing Moroccan Driver
Courtesy Faizan SyedWhen Adil Dghoughi left his girlfriend’s home in Maxwell, Texas, just after 3 a.m. on Oct. 11, she didn’t think anything of it. Sarah Todd told The Daily Beast the 31-year-old Moroccan native enjoyed late-night drives during which he would listen to music from his country, and sing.“It was kind of a relaxation thing for him,” Todd told The Daily Beast. But according to the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, by 3:42 a.m. Dghoughi was being transferred to a hospital after he’d been shot by a white property owner named Terry Turner in Martindale, less than five miles away from Maxwell. The Sheriff’s Office said the shooting occurred after Turner confronted a “suspicious” car parked outside his home.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here

Liberal California Has a Huge Racial-Profiling Problem

Don’t believe the hype. When confronted with the homeless, the farm worker, the immigrant, or the public school student with a learning disability, Californians often fail to walk it like we talk it. Inside the Netflix Series Skewering QAnon Nuts—and Joe Rogan
NetflixOn Facebook, Instagram, and various other online platforms, fake news is chipping away at the very fabric of American democracy—so it was high time such insanity was ridiculed in merciless animated fashion. Inside Job goes some way toward achieving that end, affording an intimate peek at Cognito Inc., a secret organization that covers up the fact that every conspiracy theory is real, and that the country—and world—is run by a shadow board of robed elites consumed with acquiring profit and power. Created by Shion Takeuchi and executive produced by fellow Gravity Falls alum Alex Hirsch, it’s a workplace comedy that jovially mocks our brain-fried reality—even if, ultimately, it stops just shy of truly miring itself in today’s muck.Which is to say, Inside Job doesn’t touch upon the Big Lie and anti-vax nonsense currently addling the minds of so many Americans. It does, however, takes great pleasure in pretending that our myths and fantasies—about Bigfoot, the moon landing, Yale secret societies, and more—are less fictional than we assumed. Over the course of its 10-episode first season (Oct. 22), it provides a loopy and humorous tour of our national derangement via the story of Reagan (Lizzy Caplan), Cognito Inc.’s resident genius and a woman whose intellectual prowess is matched only by her evil inclinations—conquering the planet is often high on her list of priorities—and, consequently, her desire to ascend the corporate ladder.Reagan is the daughter of Cognito Inc.’s bitter former CEO Rand (Christian Slater), who now spends his days recording YouTube videos in an effort to expose the company’s secrets, as well as drinking himself silly—a pastime which so ruins his liver that he needs regular organ transplants that are facilitated by Cognito Inc.’s new boss JR (Andrew Daly). Reagan also works with a collection of misfits who help round out the show’s cast: PR and Manipulation’s Gigi (Tisha Campbell), who exploits social media to dupe and enslave the masses; Glenn Dolphman (John DiMaggio), a right-wing military fanatic who took a super-serum that turned him into a half-man, half-dolphin creature; Andre (Bobby Lee), a mad scientist with an insatiable hunger for sex and mind-altering narcotics; and Magic Myc (Brett Gelman), a tentacled psychic mushroom who hails from the Hollow Earth, the subterranean realm that’s also the apparent home of the mole people, sea monsters, and the family from Land of the Lost.Read more at The Daily Beast.

The Warnock vs. Walker Race Promises to Be Ugly—and Well-Funded
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast / Photos Getty/APThe pivotal Senate election in Georgia is still more than a year away, but the money race is very much on.The two leading candidates, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) and Republican hopeful and NFL legend Herschel Walker, have roped in a combined $12.8 million since June 30, juicing their war chests in expectation of a fierce battle for the swing seat next November.Warnock’s $9 million haul for the period—the top quarterly number in all of Congress—outwardly appears to have bested the Walker campaign, whose financial report shows roughly $3.8 million raised. However, Walker only started accepting donations on Aug. 24, and by a daily measure, he went pound-for-pound with his rival, with each clocking about $100,000 a day.Read more at The Daily Beast.

What I’m trying to say is, people on TikTok love soup. Some very strange things have gone viral on the video-sharing app (hello, vagina ice cubes), but this trend makes a lot of sense. It’s getting colder out. Most everyone is miserable. And anyone who’s ever needed a day where they lie face down in a comforter for hours on end knows: In times of trouble, minestrone will be there. The extremely fun-to-say “#Souptok” has 29 million views on the app right now. This Conservative Pundit Says He Actually Got COVID on Purpose
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/GettyWhile most Americans are trying not to catch COVID-19—or, at the very least, pretending it doesn’t exist—one fearless pundit claims to have hugged thousands of people in order to finally contract the respiratory illness. This week on Fever Dreams, hosts Will Sommer and Kelly Weill visit the case of Dennis Prager, the conservative media figure who is now receiving Regeneron treatments for COVID-19 because he said he actually wanted to contract the illness. “We’re so many cycles into this kind of storyline now that I think Republican figures are getting a little anxious about it and they don’t want to get owned,” Sommer says of Prager’s COVID announcement. “And so you have like Allen West, who only announced that he had COVID after he had already been on a bunch of cycles of Regeneron. And now we have Dennis Prager, who’s saying that, actually, getting COVID rocks.”COVID isn’t the only fever spreading on the right. Later in the episode, we visit Michigan, where Trump fans are attempting to “audit” the 2020 vote, much like their doomed attempt in Arizona. What’s different this time? “Michigan is funny because unlike Arizona, where it was a line call for Biden, Biden won Michigan really handily,” Weill says. “Like it’s not even close.” Nevertheless, the audit efforts are drawing out some of Michigan’s fringiest, including a state lawmaker who wore a QAnon pin to a recent pro-audit rally. Nevertheless, former President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind the Michigan audit efforts, calling the state’s GOP chair to ask for an audit and endorsing a pro-audit Michigan attorney general candidate.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Air Conditioning Is Killing the Planet—Here’s How to Fix It
Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily BeastThough climate scientists say humans can still avoid the worst possible effects of climate change if the economy adopts carbon-neutral activities as soon as possible, it’s clear the planet will continue to warm regardless of how quickly we achieve that goal. To a certain extent, humans will have to face a hotter, more dangerous planet. That means we’re going to need to figure out sustainable ways to keep things comfortable at home, at work and everywhere in between as temperatures rise. The obvious solution to dealing with high temperatures is air conditioning, but current AC technology is just making climate change worse. Most designs require the use of refrigerants: chemicals that absorb heat and turn it into cool air after it runs through a compressor and evaporator. The most common AC refrigerants are hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), but they are potent greenhouse gases—thousands of times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. So we’re in a bind at the moment: the higher temperatures rise, the more our AC units are on full blast. The more our AC units are running, the more they’re contributing to climate change and, of course, rising temperatures.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Send it to The Daily Beast here

Star Baker Nadiya Hussain Shares Her Personal Scone Recipe
Chris TerryYou might be surprised to learn that Nadiya Hussain, the winner of season 6 of the hit TV series The Great British Bake Off, didn’t learn to bake until enrolling in a cooking class at secondary school.“I didn’t grow up in a family where baking was a natural thing,” says Hussain, who also hosts Netflix series Nadiya’s Time to Eat and Nadiya Bakes. “For us it was big pots of food cooking on the stovetop. This 32 Degrees Top that Helps Me Stay Warm all Winter
Photo Illustration: Scouted/The Daily Beast/AmazonScouting Report: This layering top from 32 Degrees not only keeps me warm but won't irritate my sensitive skin. When I lived on the east coast, my west coast-raised skin had a very unfortunate reaction to the cold, dry winters. Once the weather would dip into the freezing and near-freezing temps, I’d get a full-body rash that could only be described as a “chapped” skin situation. I learned, quickly, that I had to wear soft, tight layers in order to avoid being uncomfortable. Now I’m back on the west coast, in the rainy Pacific Northwest where I belong, and I got a pandemic puppy. A pandemic puppy demands to be walked, even when the temperatures are cold, wet, or windy (or a combination of all three). I found this 32 Degrees Base Layer Top and bought a few to wear on my dog walks. It’s close to the skin and is meant to be worn fitted, so it fits nicely underneath all of my outerwear.Read more at The Daily Beast.

New ‘Bachelorette’ Michelle Young Avoids Glaring ‘Red Flags’ in Stunning Debut
ABCI know this might sound a little premature, but you know what? I’m gonna say it anyway: Michelle Young is already the best Bachelorette in years. Granted, I was a little biased as I headed into the elementary school teacher’s season. She was one of the few bright spots in Matt James’ train wreck of a Bachelor outing last year, self-assured and straightforward in a way that’s become painfully rare in Bachelor Nation. (What else can we expect when we continually cast people in their early to mid-twenties?) But in a premiere replete with what one can only describe as absolute fuckery, Michelle maintained an empathetic directness that sure seems like... could it be... emotional maturity?Katie Thurston, whose season aired just months ago, was another standout in Matt James’ cast. Her season of Bachelorette got a little rocky at the end thanks to a disastrous breakdown in communication. Like Katie, Michelle saw her fair share of adorable limo entrances—but she also dealt with some genuinely bizarre red flags.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Steve Bannon Just Might Be Accidentally Saving America
Mark Kauzlarich/Bloomberg via GettyThe rusty gears driving our current constitutional crisis ratcheted another step forward on Tuesday night as the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection finally cracked down on (one) GOP official flagrantly defying its demands for documents and testimony.A bipartisan majority of committee lawmakers agreed that former Trump administration body-hider and World of Warcraft goldfarmer Steve Bannon was in contempt of his subpoena, a fact Bannon himself will gladly tell you. With a full vote in the House certain to pass, Attorney General Merrick Garland will soon be legally required to bring Bannon’s charges before a grand jury. But referring Bannon for prosecution won’t solve the Jan. 6 committee’s struggle to compel testimony from powerful Republicans who reject both the committee’s legitimacy and, more broadly, Joe Biden’s. Restoring Congress’ role as a coequal branch of government will require reclaiming years of legal powers delegated to an ever more expansive presidency — and resulting in a president who felt powerful enough to stage a failed coup.Read more at The Daily Beast.

Bennie G. Thompson, (D-MS). “Mr. Bannon will comply with our investigation, or he will face the consequences. Created by a Famed Meteorologist, the Weatherman Umbrella Won’t Collapse Under Pressure
Photo Illustration: Scouted/The Daily Beast/AmazonScouting Report: Invented by an actual meteorologist, the Weatherman Umbrella can withstand any weather you're willing to walk through. It wasn’t until I started commuting to work via train that I understood the value of a reliable, long-lasting umbrella. For years, I had invested in cheap, flimsy umbrellas that fell apart or embarrassingly flipped inside out after a handful of uses. But when you get caught in a windy rain storm with a cheap umbrella, no rain boots, wearing open-toed sandals with over ten blocks to go until your destination, you begin to question your weather-related decision making.Founded by famed meteorologist Rick Reichmuth, Weatherman Umbrella is not producing your typical run-of-the-mill, cheap umbrellas. The Brooklyn-based company has developed a line of well-made umbrellas with state-of-art materials, including industrial-strength fiberglass and quick-dry, water-repellent canopies, which save you and the floor from being soaked when you close the umbrella after a storm.
