Jill Biden, el as en la manga del candidato demócrata

Joe Biden siempre ha defendido que está en la carrera presidencial para «recuperar el alma de América» en medio de la polarización política en la era de Donald Trump. Su mujer, Jill, se demostró este lunes como una colaboradora efectiva para trasladar esa idea a los votantes. La aspirante a primera dama cerró la segunda noche de la convención demócrata con un discurso celebrado, que le confirma como un activo de Biden en lo que queda de campaña, sobre todo para convencer al voto moderado. Al contrario que en otras tradiciones políticas, la figura de la primera dama en EE.UU. es relevante. En campaña, sirve para completar el retrato íntimo del candidato, poner el acento en sus valores personales, en su carácter. Es la conexión familiar con el votante, la que le permite imaginarse si el próximo presidente sería un buen padre o un buen marido. Desde un instituto Jill Biden hizo eso –subrayó la honestidad, la generosidad y la resistencia ante la tragedia del candidato, que perdió a su primera mujer y a su hija en un accidente de tráfico, y a otro de sus hijos por cáncer– y mucho más. Habló desde un instituto de Delaware, donde fue profesora en los años 90. Los pasillos y aulas vacíos eran una referencia a la pandemia de Covid-19, con lo que lanzó un dardo envenenado a Trump. «Como madre y abuela, como estadounidense, tengo el corazón roto por la magnitud de la pérdida, por el fracaso a la hora de proteger nuestras comunidades, por cada vida preciosa e irremplazable que se ha perdido», dijo en referencia a la crisis sanitaria y económica. La mujer de Biden ofrece una figura con la que se puede identificar buena parte del electorado: criada en los suburbios de Filadelfia, con antecedentes italianos y escoceses, con una vida dedicada a la educación (ahora es profesora de una pequeña universidad pública) y con una historia de amor conmovedora. Biden, después de haber perdido a su mujer, le pidió matrimonio cinco veces. Ella le dijo cuatro veces que no por el bien de sus dos hijos, que habían perdido a su madre: «Quería estar segura de que sería para siempre». Un contraste, sin duda, con la historia sentimental de la familia presidencial: Trump se casó en terceras nupcias con una modelo eslovena a la que saca un cuarto de siglo. La comparación entre Jill y Melania será una nueva carta electoral para Biden.
