‘Euphoria’s’ Stripped-Down Pandemic Special Is Proof That It’s a Must-Watch
via HBOThere’s a certain irony to the fact that Euphoria, a series known above all for its over-the-top aesthetics, just delivered a Christmas special about two people sitting in a diner eating pancakes. After the haunting musical sequence that accompanied Rue’s relapse, it was difficult to know what would come next—both for our hoodied antihero and the series as a whole. And although the look of Friday’s special episode might feel out of character, the direction it charts is promising—and the delivery proves that despite what some detractors of the series might think, its power amounts to more than flash and glitter. The episode opens in a fantasy: Rue relapsed after she couldn’t bring herself to run away with Jules, but for a few minutes we see what their life might have been like. As they kiss each other in bed and prepare for Jules’s presentation, crinkled noses and “I love you’s” abound. Then, as soon as Jules leaves, Rue grabs the pills she’s stashed under their bed, snorting them in the bathroom and waking up in reality. It’s Christmas Eve, and she’s at an empty diner with her sponsor, Ali. And she’s high. But Ali is too smart to fall for Rue’s sobriety bluff. And so instead of letting her ramble about the fantastic “emotional balance” she swears she’s discovered, he demands that she digs deeper. What follows is a nearly hour-long conversation about sobriety, redemption, and above all, the struggle to believe in anything in an ugly, inscrutable world. Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? Trevor Noah Calls Out ‘Hypocrite’ Democratic Politicians for Breaking COVID Rules
Comedy CentralOn Thursday night, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah took aim at an unlikely target: Democratic politicians. You see, a number of Dem politicians of late have been caught telling their constituents to stay inside and avoid large gatherings while ignoring those rules themselves. Among the offending Dems were San Francisco Mayor London Breed, who attended a group dinner at the swanky restaurant French Laundry; California Governor Gavin Newsom, who was among a group of 12 people dining at French Laundry; and Austin Mayor Steve Adler, who made a video cautioning his fellow Austinites to “stay inside”—but recorded it from a vacation timeshare in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.“Oh man, come on! What is it with these Democrats?” asked Noah, before mimicking Adler’s message to the public: “This is your mayor here, telling you to stay home, and stay safe. Do the right thing… All my boys in the pool know what I’m talking about! Say what’s up, everybody!”Read more at The Daily Beast.

Jimmy Kimmel Brutally Mocks Rudy Giuliani’s Star ‘Witness’ Melissa Carone
ABCTwitter spent most of the day on Thursday trying to predict which Saturday Night Live cast member would portray the latest unbelievable election “witness” to emerge from Rudy Giuliani’s “hearings.” The consensus seemed to be Kate McKinnon, but she would likely have trouble playing both Giuliani and Melissa Carone.Either way, it was Jimmy Kimmel who got the first late-night crack at Carone during his monologue Thursday night.“Cousin Rudy is at it again,” the host said. “There is some crazy stuff going on right now that most people probably aren’t even aware of. Ex-Presidents Can Get Intel Briefings. Trump Shouldn’t.
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/GettyAs a courtesy, former presidents are typically assured continued access to the country’s secrets when they request it. But Donald Trump’s personal debt ($400 million) and his proclivity to share secrets with foreign adversaries make him a security risk. As a private citizen, he could never qualify for the security clearance that was conferred upon him as president. The decision to pull the plug falls to the new president. Biden shouldn’t hesitate to cut him off in a New York minute. The guy is a charlatan and a con man, and he’ll monetize every morsel of information he can get his hands on, national security be damned.Under the statutes governing national security, the former president would have no legal course to challenge the decision of Joe Biden or any future president should they decide to withhold intelligence, says Dakota Rudesill, associate professor at Ohio State University’s College of Law. “The powers of the president depart completely from former presidents when they leave office,” Rudesill says. “Access to classified information is a privilege, not a right.”Read more at The Daily Beast.
