La ONG Open Arms vuelve al Mediterráneo central

La ONG Open Arms vuelve al Mediterráneo central. El velero Astral ha zarpado este miércoles hacia las aguas internacionales próximas a Libia en una nueva misión de observación de derechos humanos, con el objetivo de documentar las deficiencias de los rescates por parte de las autoridades europeas. En unos días, le seguirá el Open Arms, buque insignia de la entidad, para volver a salvar vidas en una de las rutas migratorias más mortíferas tras meses de reparación.

"En todo este tiempo han seguido llegando embarcaciones y han seguido naufragando embarcaciones en esa zona. Ahora mismo hay 100 personas desaparecidas. No hay mucha información al respecto así que volvemos para ver lo que está pasando", ha afirmado Oscar Caps, director de la organización catalana.

"Ante la escasa presencia de organizaciones humanitarias en la frontera más letal del planeta, fruto de una estrategia de criminalización y de obstáculos administrativos por parte de las autoridades de los países ribereños con el objetivo de bloquear a la flota humanitaria que opera en el Mediterráneo Central, regresamos para documentar lo que allí ocurre, activar a las administraciones responsables de la protección de los derechos humanos y garantizar la intervención rápida en caso de necesidad", ha explicado la organización a través de un comunicado.

"Son numerosos los casos documentados a diario de embarcaciones que han sido abandonadas por las administraciones responsables de su seguridad por lo que es nuestra misión ayudar a garantizar la protección de las vidas en peligro, y obligar a todas las partes a cumplir con su responsabilidad frente a las personas más vulnerables", continúan desde la ONG.

El buque insignia Open Arms ha permanecido en el puerto de Burriana desde febrero, cuando la ONG anunció el regreso a España del antiguo carguero que ha rescatado miles de vidas en el Mediterráneo central, pese a los obstáculos impuestos a sus operaciones por parte del Gobierno italiano y español. El mal estado del motor hacía temer a la tripulación del buque su imposible reparación, pero finalmente la organización ha logrado arreglarlo. "El corazón del Open Arms late de nuevo", anunciaban recientemente a través de Twitter. Ante las constantes denuncias de ONG como Sea Watch acerca de las deficiencias en los rescates por parte de las autoridades europea y la posible omisión de socorro en algunos casos documentados, la organización española ha decidido volver a la zona.

Según la Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (OMI), 267 personas han muerto en su intento de llegar a Italia a través del Mediterráneo central en lo que va de año. No obstante, las organizaciones especializadas advierten de que la cifra puede ser superior, debido a la falta de ONG que documenten los naufragios de la zona durante los primeros meses de la pandemia.
