U.N. says world likely to miss climate targets despite COVID pause in emissions
ZURICH - The pace of climate change has not been slowed by the global COVID-19 pandemic and the world remains behind in its battle to cut carbon emissions, the United Nations said on Thursday. The virus-related economic downturn caused only a temporary downturn in CO2 emissions last year and it was not enough to reverse rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said. "There was some thinking that the COVID lockdowns would have had a positive impact on the (...) atmosphere, which is not the case," WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas said at a news briefing. The world in 2021 was missing the mark of bu...Keep on reading: U.N. says world likely to miss climate targets despite COVID pause in emissions

Air Force keeps eyes on Swedish Grippen jets
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana may have been impressed with the Lockheed Martin F-16 multirole fighter aircraft of the United States, but practical reasons may prompt the Philippines to acquire equally impressive supersonic jets made in Sweden. The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a light single-engine multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by the Swedish aerospace company Saab AB. Back from his trip to Washington, Lorenzana marveled at how the F-16 was easy to fly after having flown the aircraft on a flight simulator while he was in the United States. Easy to land "The F-16 is very good. Even if you're new to flying it, after being taught the basics you can easily land the aircraf...Keep on reading: Air Force keeps eyes on Swedish Grippen jets

Meralco digs deep amid manpower crisis
Even with some of its key players sidelined, Meralco proved to be a truly capable bunch, carving out a 95-83 victory over Terrafirma in the PBA Philippine Cup on Thursday afternoon at Don Honorio Ventura State University in Bacolor town, Pampanga, shoring up its bid for a twice-to-beat armor in the playoffs. "We always study the other team and prepare for their offense and defense, but I [think] this game was more about us," said coach Norman Black, whose club hurdled the absence of Chris Newsome and Cliff Hodge, the team's two top guns who remain sidelined by the league's health protocols. "[Like] what [guard] Anjo Caram said: We just have to play together and play for one ano...Keep on reading: Meralco digs deep amid manpower crisis

Delta outbreak seen to slow PH recovery
The recent revert to stringent lockdowns to contain COVID-19's more infectious Delta strain will slow down the Philippines' economic recovery and possibly result in below-target growth this year, think tanks said on Thursday. In a report, the Japan Center for Economic Research (JCER) slashed its 2021 gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for the Philippines to 3.2 percent from its 5.1-percent projection in June. The updated forecast was also below the government's 4-5 percent goal. JCER estimated year-on-year GDP growth during the current third quarter to decelerate to 3 percent from the 11.8-percent jump in the second quarter. The think tank projected third-quarter GDP t...Keep on reading: Delta outbreak seen to slow PH recovery

PSEi draws nearer to 7,000 on hunt for good deals in large-cap stocks
The stock barometer edged closer to the 7,000 mark on Thursday, driven by selective buying of large-cap stocks. The main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) gained 66.99 points, or 0.97 percent, to close at 6,947.19. "The Philippines and the rest of the region scored solid gains after several lackluster sessions that had left the market primed for bargain-hunting," said Luis Gerardo Limlingan, managing director at Regina Capital Development. "Surging energy stocks contributed to the upbeat performance both here and abroad, while investors [remained] fixated on next week's Federal Reserve meeting," he added. In recent weeks, Fed tapering jitters have declined across g...Keep on reading: PSEi draws nearer to 7,000 on hunt for good deals in large-cap stocks

Faroe Islands to re-evaluate dolphin-hunting after outcry
COPENHAGEN, Denmark - The Faroe Islands, an autonomous territory of Denmark, said Thursday it would take another look at the practice of dolphin-hunting after the slaughter of more than 1,400 of the mammals earlier this week sparked an outcry. "The government has decided to start an evaluation of the regulations on the catching of Atlantic white-sided dolphins," the northern archipelago's prime minister, Bardur a Steig Nielsen, said in a statement. "Although these hunts are considered sustainable, we will be looking closely at the dolphin hunts, and what part they should play in Faroese society." The comments come in the wake of an outcry over the culli...Keep on reading: Faroe Islands to re-evaluate dolphin-hunting after outcry

Moderna says COVID-19 vaccine protection wanes, makes case for booster
CHICAGO - New data from Moderna Inc's large COVID-19 vaccine trial shows that the protection it offers wanes over time, supporting the case for booster doses, the company said in a news release on Wednesday. "This is only one estimate, but we do believe this means as you look toward the fall and winter, at minimum we expect the estimated impact of waning immunity would be 600,000 additional cases of COVID-19," Moderna President Stephen Hoge said on a conference call with investors. Hoge did not project how many of the cases would be severe, but said some would require hospitalization. The data stands in stark contrast with data from several rece...Keep on reading: Moderna says COVID-19 vaccine protection wanes, makes case for booster

Cinema ’76 San Juan: Filmmakers and cinephiles’ haven latest victim of pandemic
The resurgence of the COVID-19 virus early this year has introduced a darker reality for most of the key players in the entertainment industry: that the temporary closure of some industry-related establishments has become permanent. Case in point: Cinema '76 San Juan, the microcinema created in 2016 that became "a haven for filmmakers, producers and film fans looking for a home," has permanently closed shop on Wednesday, according to Daphne Chiu, EVP and general manager for TBA Studios. "It hasn't been operating for quite a while now, but, early this year, we came to a point when we said we could no longer wait for the government's go signal to operate. Canada PM Trudeau says main election rival has shown poor leadership on COVID
MONTREAL - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, seeking to carve out a lead ahead of Monday's election, on Thursday said his main rival had adopted a lax approach to fighting COVID-19 and shown weak leadership. Opinion polls show Trudeau's Liberals are tied with the right-of-center Conservatives of Erin O'Toole and look set to fall well short in their bid to win a parliamentary majority. Trudeau, 49, noted that O'Toole, 48, had praised Alberta Premier Jason Kenney's decision earlier in the year to quickly lift public health restrictions in his western province. COVID-19 cases soared, threatening the healthcare system. Kenney on Wednesday apologized for...Keep on reading: Canada PM Trudeau says main election rival has shown poor leadership on COVID
