‘A Good Provider Is the One Who Leaves’ — best argument for immigration

WASHINGTON, DC -- A Good Provider Is the One Who Leaves is the title of a new book by noted New York Times reported Jason DeParle. It is the story of a Filipino family, that is really like thousands of others, whose need to provide for their families causes them to find ways to leave the Philippines to seek gainful employment. DeParle's book was feted on NPR and the New York Times book review and is fast becoming the best argument for immigration, not just in the US, but worldwide. My first thought was -- ho hum---another Filipino rags-to-riches story. Is there anything left to be said? Yes, we get it, Filipinos are poor and when they go abroad they do well, and that the...

MANILA, Philippines---Arven Alcantara came up short in his spirited comeback and settled for the silver medal in the 68 kilograms taekwondo final in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Sunday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Hauihongthong landed a scissor kick as the two were falling to the ground to set the final count. A bit of confusion ensued when Hauihongthong's kick was initially ruled illegal but after a lengthy video review, the referee and the technical committee ultimately handed him the point. House impeachment report looks at abuse, bribery, corruption
WASHINGTON --- Previewing potential articles of impeachment, the House Democrats on Saturday issued a lengthy report drawing on history and the Founding Fathers to lay out the legal argument over the case against President Donald Trump's actions toward Ukraine. The findings from the House Judiciary Committee do not spell out the formal charges against the president, which are being drafted ahead of votes, possibly as soon as next week. Instead, the report refutes Trump's criticism of the impeachment proceedings, arguing that the Constitution created impeachment as a "safety valve" so Americans would not have to wait for the next election to remove a president. Thousands march as Hong Kong protests near half-year mark
