Bangladesh expects Myanmar to keep Rohingya repatriation commitments despite coup

DHAKA --- Bangladesh called for peace and stability in Myanmar after a military coup on Monday, and said it hoped its neighbor make genuine efforts to move forward the stalled process of voluntary repatriation of Rohingya Muslim refugees. Mainly-Muslim Bangladesh has sheltered 1 million Rohingya who had fled violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, where most of them are denied citizenship. A UN-backed repatriation process has failed to take off despite multiple attempts from Bangladesh, which has now started sending some of the refugees to an isolated island in the Bay of Bengal. "We have been persistent in developing mutually beneficial relations with Myanmar and have been worki...

Samosas are my link to my mother
I was born and raised in Ndola, Zambia, Central Africa, by my mother, who was an excellent Indian chef. She taught me her most difficult dishes, all-time favorites, vegan/nonvegan samosas. Growing up with this daily repetition of making chapatis and samosas along with other Indian delicacies, I mastered those skills very well. When I was 20, my parents got me married to an Indian businessman here in Manila. We were blessed with five children. Then came an opening in Maya Kitchen. The chefs who were my friends felt I could hold classes successfully. Again, it was the samosas and dal puri (yellow lentil and deep-fried puffed Indian bread). Over the years, the Mediter...Keep on reading: Samosas are my link to my mother

Where to eat on a food trip to Laguna
Since COVID has made air travel constricting, many Filipinos have resorted to road trips to relieve anxiety from being cooped up in their own homes. Fortunately, nearby cities are benefiting from it. Tagaytay restaurants get an influx of people on weekends. And so do Batangas resorts. Another province that's been getting a lot of love of late is Laguna. Just an estimated 75-minute southeast drive from Manila, it is one place that definitely has a lot to offer, not just in terms of arts and handicrafts, but also food. Located in San Pablo City is a boutique-slash-bed-and-breakfast-slash-restaurant wrapped in lush greenery. Established in April 2011, the Patis Tito Gard...Keep on reading: Where to eat on a food trip to Laguna

This Tiktok pasta is worth the hype
It has been described by the Washington Post as being "worth the hype." And indeed, this recipe for pasta with tomatoes and feta cheese has been doing the rounds of Tiktok and international blog posts for months now, and so far nearly everyone seems to be in wonderment that something that's so easy can be so delicious. I learned about this recipe from my nephew Joseph Yap in Sydney, Australia, who posted it on our family chat group. He said he himself has made the recipe and while it gave him heartburn because of all the tomatoes, he would recommend that I try it. It seems the recipe was first posted by Tiiu Piret in her blog in February 2018, according to Aaron Hutcherson of the W...Keep on reading: This Tiktok pasta is worth the hype

Why do Filipinos eat processed fish, not fresh, during Lent?
Growing up with Lola, there was really nothing special I remember of her Holy Week menus. What I remember were the negative musts. No eating meat. No noise. No taking a bath on Good Friday. No swimming on Good Friday or the siokoy (merman) will drown you. Listen to the Good Friday Seven Last Words. Seafood was present every day on our table. So abstinence really wasn't a sacrifice. Maybe Lola should have withheld the tinapang kapak, a specialty of her home province, Bataan, which were small smoked banak (mullet) so we would know what foregoing a favorite food can be like. That is why, when friends reminisced about the Lenten fare of their families, what many talked about were not f...Keep on reading: Why do Filipinos eat processed fish, not fresh, during Lent?

Lovi Poe returns to her ‘first love’—singing
Music has always been Lovi Poe's first love. But somewhere along the way, she found herself getting drawn more and more into acting. Now, with a new single out, the actress feels it's high time to revisit her roots and rediscover the joys of singing. Her latest song, "Under," was recorded and released under the Los Angeles-based label VIM Entertainment, and will be part of her upcoming EP in May. "Honestly, this is so nerve-wracking. Singing was what I originally planned to do when I first entered show biz. However, I ended up being more of an actress. But now that I'm about to do it again, I'm starting to get butterflies in my stomach," she told the Inquirer in a virtual co...Keep on reading: Lovi Poe returns to her ‘first love’—singing
