Honored and proud
If there's anyone who knows just how close basketball is to the Filipinos' hearts, Tim Cone said it would be him. "I know that as well---or better than anybody," he told reporters on Sunday night. Perhaps that's also why it wasn't that much of a chore for Cone to accept the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) offer to take charge of the country's Southeast Asian Games bid slated here later this year. "I would know---I've been there, done that. Or should I say, I've been there and didn't do that," Cone coyly told reporters on the eve of the announcement, where he all but confirmed the move. On Monday afternoon, the SBP announced that the multi-titled mentor had accepted the ...Keep on reading: Honored and proud

Baron feels anything is possible as long as Ph volleyball is united
NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand---Things are looking up for Philippine volleyball, and no one is more optimistic than Majoy Baron. The 24-year-old Baron, who just won the Best Middle Blocker award in the Asean Volleyball Grand Prix, feels the team just took a big leap toward its goal to reclaim its lost glory in Southeast Asia. "I think it's possible. Because you see we only had a few days to train and we saw improvement in every game," said Baron, a former UAAP Most Valuable Player. "We have a lot of potential, but we need to establish our foundation and a longer training time," said Baron, who averaged 4.6 kill blocks per game during the inaugural edition of the Asean GP. Mario Miclat’s mighty heart
This piece is about my husband. But it's in no way self-indulgent. (Notice my tongue in cheek.) Mario Ignacio Miclat had a brush with death when he furiously bled after a quintuple bypass operation at age 49. What would happen to this man of letters, scholar and academic? Blood donors came to his rescue---friends and friends of friends from the academe, corporate world, police and military. An excellent team of surgeons and doctors at the Heart Center gave him a new lease on life. A group of nurses converged at his hospital bed to see who this guy was, who had blood donors queuing from sunrise to sundown. As a result, there was a surplus of donated blood, which benefited other ...Keep on reading: Mario Miclat’s mighty heart

Do you have good or bad cholesterol?
Ethnicity is now strongly recognized as an important modifier in the treatment of major risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol problems. In a recent convention on cholesterol and atherosclerosis---the progressive narrowing of the body's arteries due to the buildup of fat plaque inside them---this was stressed again, highlighting the need for each country to have its own guide to assessing cardiovascular risk. The current practice is to rely on guidelines from American and European experts. While these are reliable, there are instances when Asian patients behave differently from Caucasians. The "Storm Area 51" invitation spawned festivals in the tiny Nevada towns of Rachel and Hiko nearest the military site and a more than a two-hour drive from Las Vegas. Biden’s Son and His Questionable Relationship with Ukraine
In 2014, then-Vice President Joe Biden was at the forefront of American diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine's fragile democratic government as it sought to fend off Russian aggression and root out corruption. So it raised eyebrows when Biden's son Hunter was hired by a Ukrainian gas company.     The Obama White House said at the time that there was no conflict because the younger Biden was a private citizen. And there's been no evidence of wrongdoing by either Biden. Yet the matter is back in the spotlight following revelations that President Donald Trump prodded Ukraine's president to help him investigate any corruption related to Joe Biden, now one of ...Keep on reading: Biden’s Son and His Questionable Relationship with Ukraine
