North Korea confirms latest weapons tests as Kim visits ‘important’ munitions factory
SEOUL - North Korea conducted tests of an upgraded long-range cruise missile and a warhead of a tactical guided missile this week, as leader Kim Jong Un visited a munitions factory producing a "major weapon system," state media KCNA said on Friday. An update to a long-range cruise missile system was tested on Tuesday, and another test was held to confirm the power of a conventional warhead for a surface-to-surface tactical guided missile on Thursday, KCNA said. In a separate dispatch, Kim lauded the factory for achieving progress in "producing major weapons" and holding a "very important position and duty" in modernising the country's armed forces and realis...Keep on reading: North Korea confirms latest weapons tests as Kim visits ‘important’ munitions factory

Tokyo, Japan -- A Japanese man attacked at least two reported medical workers making a visit to a home in Fujimino, west of Tokyo, on Thursday night, shooting one and taking another hostage, local media said. Police said a 41-year-old man was found shot twice but still conscious outside the house and was taken to hospital after gunshots were heard around 9:00 pm (1200 GMT), the Jiji news agency reported. GDP up 5.6%: Door to recovery fully open–Neda chief
The Philippine economy rebounded at a surprisingly fast pace in 2021 after the easing of COVID-19 quarantine rules in the fourth quarter reopened more business activities, got more people back to work and propped up consumer spending. "Our door to economic recovery is fully open. The numbers for 2021 show an economy trying to break out," Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua said on Thursday, after reporting that the gross domestic product (GDP), a measure of the value of goods produced and services rendered in the economy, expanded by 5.6 percent in 2021. This breached the government's target range of 5-5.5 percent and reversed the 9.6-percent decline in 2020---the ...Keep on reading: GDP up 5.6%: Door to recovery fully open–Neda chief

ERC directs electric co-ops to cut systems losses
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has ordered electric cooperatives (ECs) to immediately reduce their systems losses to help curb rising electricity rates in the provinces. In a regulatory advisory, the ERC said around 44 percent of the country's 121 ECs had passed on hefty energy charges to consumers while sharp increases from the previous quarter were observed among 22 ECs. These figures were based on the ECs' residential rates for September last year. The increase in electricity rates in the third quarter last year was primarily due to the high cost of fuel---particularly coal---used to operate power plants. But the impact on the monthly billings could be mitigated by re...Keep on reading: ERC directs electric co-ops to cut systems losses

Prince Andrew seeking jury trial in sex assault case in New York
New York, United States -- Britain's Prince Andrew is seeking a jury trial to clear his name in the sexual assault civil complaint he is fighting in New York, and which has already left him in disgrace and forced him to withdraw from royal duties, his lawyers announced Wednesday. "Prince Andrew hereby demands a trial by jury on all causes of action asserted in the complaint," his attorney wrote in a motion filed at a Manhattan federal court. His accuser, Victoria Giuffre, has said she had sex with the prince when she was 17 and a minor under US law after meeting him through the late US financier Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in prison two years ago while awaiting trial...Keep on reading: Prince Andrew seeking jury trial in sex assault case in New York

John Cena, Sung Kang and director Justin Lin on how ‘Fast & Furious’ thrives by defying labels
A lot of ink has been spent writing about John Cena's splashy participation in "F9: The Fast Saga," but the return of Sung Kang (Han Lue in "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift") and Justin Lin (director of "Fast & Furious," "Fast Five" and "Fast & Furious 6") into the fold is just as significant for fans of the series. During our paired interview with Justin and Sung, the director told us that the idea of being able to go beyond people's expectations---like letting cars fly from a high-rise building or bringing dead characters back to life---is one of the things that attracted him to the action franchise. How Bajula indie pop duo’s IT expertise helped in creating music during pandemic
While the pandemic has hampered the way artists usually collaborate and create music, the indie electronic pop duo Bajula had no problems shifting to a mostly remote, digital workflow, thanks to its members Alvin "Vertigo" Guanlao's and Jolo "Frazier" Juatco's background in information technology (IT). "Frazier and I both have IT backgrounds, so we're both used to navigating the internet. And so when the lockdown happened, it was easier for us to work our way around in terms of adapting to different technology that will allow us to produce remotely," Vertigo told the Inquirer in a Zoom interview.
