Duterte wants no killer as BuCor boss; looks out for ‘honesty, competence’

MANILA, Philippines --- "Honesty and competence" are two qualities that President Rodrigo Duterte is in search of for the next Bureau of Corrections chief. Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo disclosed this Thursday, after Duterte's trusted aide -- now Senator Christopher "Bong" Go -- said the next BuCor boss should be a "killer." "You know, the President has only two qualifications: honesty and competence," Panelo said Thursday in a Palace briefing. "A killer? The President has not made any announcement on that so we'll just have to wait for his appointing a person to replace chief Faeldon," he said. Must be happenstance that the Southeast Asian Games are being held in Manila late in the year, as it has been in the past every 14 years or so in 2005 and, before that, 1991. In 1981 the games were also held here, serving as prelude to Diay de Vega’s ruling the 100 and 200 meters in the Asian Games the following year.

Fourteen of Paris' subway lines were closed, with only two lines --- using automated trains with no drivers --- functioning. International routes also suffered disruptions. Monday will be a bigger test of the strike movement's strength, and of travelers' patience.
