In counter-affidavit, Archbishop Villegas admits meeting Bikoy but denies being part of ‘oust-Duterte plot’

MANILA, Philippines - Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas has denied being part of a plan to oust President Duterte but admits meeting Peter Joemel "Bikoy" Advincula briefly once. In his counter-affidavit submitted to the Department of Justice (DOJ), Villegas said while he was at the Jesuit Residence in Ateneo, Advincula approached him and asked if they could talk. He said Advincula talked about his hardships that he was moved and he gave his personal rosary blessed by Pope Francis and he blessed him. Contrary to Advincula's claim that his meeting with Villegas was on Dec. 12, 2018, the Archbishop said he encountered Advincula once on April 24. The Arc...

Envoy to Panelo: What if China suspects OFWs of spying, too?
MANILA, Philippines --- Do Filipinos suspect that Chinese workers in the Philippines are really spies? Well, the Chinese can think the same way about overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in China, too. But let's perish the thought that the thousands of our nationals working in your country and yours working in ours are security threats.   That was the message from Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua to Malacaang after Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana raised concerns about the presence of Chinese-manned Philippine offshore gaming operation (Pogo) sites near military and police camps, according to presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo.   Lorenzana earlier said that ...Keep on reading: Envoy to Panelo: What if China suspects OFWs of spying, too?

Cardema cries extortion; all for publicity, says poll exec
MANILA, Philippines --- He and his party mates are "the victims" here, Duterte Youth party list nominee Ronald Cardema said on Saturday as he claimed that Elections Commissioner Rowena Guanzon, through an emissary, had asked favors from him in exchange for the party's accreditation in January.   Cardema was apparently responding to Guanzon's recent claims that she had been receiving death threats from his camp after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) First Division canceled his nomination as Duterte Youth representative on Aug. 5 for "material misrepresentation" of his age.   The law requires youth sector nominees to be 25 to 30 years old on Election Day. Tide of fear rising in Dumagat land
The Dumagat have been living on the banks of the Kaliwa River for centuries, and swimming is second nature to them. Yet they are afraid that they, along with their ancestral domain, their culture and traditions, will be drowned in the planned Kaliwa Dam, a project of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to be built with an P18.7-billon loan from China.   "We will drown ... They say it will be deep," said 10-year-old Erik John Leynes, who lives with his family near the Kaliwa River.   The river, which is to be the dam's main water source, flows between the towns of Infanta and General Nakar in Quezon province, on the boundaries of Barang...Keep on reading: Tide of fear rising in Dumagat land

COA questions CAAP over P500M spent for 10 execs’ life insurance
MANILA, Philippines --- The Commission on Audit (COA) has called out the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) for purchasing life insurance plans worth a total of P500 million for 10 of its officials, despite lack of board approval and proper selection criteria.   In its annual audit report, the COA said the insurance plans, bought from United Coconut Planters Life Assurance Corp. (Cocolife), were the single-pay variable life insurance type, also called the Zenith plan under Cocolife.   A variable life insurance product is an investment-linked product that simultaneously provides insurance and invests in mutual funds or unit investment funds.  ...Keep on reading: COA questions CAAP over P500M spent for 10 execs’ life insurance

Basilan opens ‘House of Peace’ to help ex-Abus start anew
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Zamboanga del Sur, Philippines --- Inside the sprawling camp of the Philippine Army's 4th Special Forces Battalion in Isabela City, Basilan, stands a newly built one-story facility.   There is nothing extraordinary about the building that houses an office, sleeping quarters and a prayer room, among others. But its name --- Baithus Salam, or "House of Peace" --- makes it stand out in a land that has known violence and strife for decades.   Inaugurated last week, the facility is dedicated to the reformation of former members of the Abu Sayyaf, a group of bandits that has bedeviled Basilan's growth and progress since its inception almost 30 years ag...Keep on reading: Basilan opens ‘House of Peace’ to help ex-Abus start anew

Autopsy of EJK victims pushed
MANILA, Philippines --- Recalling the police killing of teenager Kian delos Santos on Aug. 16, 2017, Sen. Francis Pangilinan again pushed for the mandatory autopsy of people who died under questionable circumstances.   Prevailing civil registry rules already require autopsies of those who died under questionable circumstances but Pangilinan's proposal would make it a matter of law even if the next of kin waive an autopsy.   "The original purpose of this measure is to help investigate the increasing daily killings way back in 2017," said Pangilinan, who had proposed a similar measure two years ago.   Under the bill, autopsies will be mandated for deaths re...Keep on reading: Autopsy of EJK victims pushed

Same mighty Beermen
Their PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign wasn't perfect---then again, nothing ever is. But the San Miguel Beermen opened the conference in a far from ideal manner and questions began to rise as to whether they could make a run to the title. Making the prospects even worse, on the opposite end of the Finals showdown was TNT, which steamrolled the opposition and had pundits anointing the KaTropa champions long before the Finals series tipped off. "We struggled in the eliminations," said veteran guard and defensive whiz Chris Ross. "We were the 7th seed. We had to overcome twice-to-win and then we had to play a gritty Rain or Shine team that pushed us every game. Then you play a team...Keep on reading: Same mighty Beermen

Eddie Baddeo: Even when he was very sick, he worried about others
Eddie Baddeo laughed heartily on the phone when we called to ask if he was making any dresses for the Sona (State of the Nation Address), seeing the humor in our query. This was in mid-2014, only a few months after he gave an affidavit on his role in the Janet Napoles and the PDAF (Priority and Development Assistance Fund) scam, ultimately becoming one of the whistleblowers. The fashion designer had many clients among politicians and the moneyed set, including Napoles---connections that the convicted plunderer later exploited.
