Fossil fuel groups ‘destroying’ climate talks–NGOs
PARIS -- Oil and gas groups were accused Saturday of seeking to influence climate talks in Madrid by paying millions in sponsorship and sending dozens of lobbyists to delay what scientists say is a necessary and rapid cut in fossil fuel use. A day after tens of thousands marched in the Spanish capital demanding climate action, seven environmental groups raised concerns to AFP over the role of fossil fuel representatives at the COP25 summit. Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, nations agreed to limit global warming to "well below" two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) and as close to 1.5C as possible. Trump pulls back on designating Mexico cartels as ‘terror’ groups
WASHINGTON -- US President Donald Trump on Friday pulled back on his stated plans to designate Mexican drug cartels as terror groups, saying he was doing so at the request of his counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Last month, Trump had called for a "war" on the cartels after the killing of nine women and children from a US-Mexican Mormon community, but south of the common border, his plans were seen as unwanted meddling. Mexican officials asked for clarification, and said they wanted to make progress on efforts to stem the flow of weapons and money from the United States to criminal gangs in Mexico. ‘The King’: Interesting but not memorable
"The King" is a Netflix film adapted from Shakespeare's "Henriad." It chronicles King Henry V's (played by Timothe Chalamet) reluctant acceptance of the crown, and the wars and political machinations he has to deal with to rectify his father's (Ben Mendelsohn) debauched rule as king. What's evident throughout is that director David Michd is attempting to stage a Shakespearean epic through a film that acts as an abridged "Game of Thrones" season. Michd explores the corruptive self-interest of power and the savagery of war---the first shot is literally of a soldier walking past muddied corpses on a desolate battlefield described as having happened in 15th-century Europe. But it's ...Keep on reading: ‘The King’: Interesting but not memorable
