Finland’s new young female prime minister breaks the mold
COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Finland's next government is breaking the mold in multiple ways.     Sanna Marin, the 34-year-old transport minister, was tapped over the weekend by the ruling Social Democratic Party to be Finland's new prime minister. When she takes the reins of the country, most likely on Tuesday, she will become the world's youngest sitting head of government.   In another unusual development, Marin will head a coalition with four other parties that are all led by women --- three of whom are in their early 30s. Her own biography also breaks the mold: Raised by a single mother, she has described feeling discriminated against in Finland when her m...Keep on reading: Finland’s new young female prime minister breaks the mold

Up to 13 feared dead in volcanic eruption off New Zealand
WHAKATANE, New Zealand - A volcano off the New Zealand coast erupted Monday with a towering blast of ash and scalding steam as dozens of tourists were exploring its moon-like surface, killing five people and leaving eight others missing and feared dead, authorities said.     Helicopter crews landed on White Island despite the danger and helped evacuate the dozens of survivors, some of them critically injured.   Hours after the disaster, authorities said the site was still too dangerous for rescuers to search for the missing. But aircraft flew over the island repeatedly, and "no signs of life have been seen at any point," Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern sai...Keep on reading: Up to 13 feared dead in volcanic eruption off New Zealand

NBA denies Rockets’ protest after Harden dunk waved off
NEW YORK - The Houston Rockets won't get a do-over after officials wrongly disallowed a slam dunk by James Harden in a double-overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs, even though the NBA has disciplined the officials who got the call wrong and botched the aftermath by not allowing Houston to challenge.     The league announced Monday that it has denied the Rockets' protest of last Tuesday's game, which the Spurs won 135-133. A successful protest, which is rare, would result in part of the game being replayed.   Harden's dunk with 7:50 remaining in regulation was so forceful that, after the ball cleared the net, it looped around the basket and upward, crea...Keep on reading: NBA denies Rockets’ protest after Harden dunk waved off

US stocks close broadly lower on Wall Street; trade in focus
Stocks closed modestly lower on Wall Street Monday as losses in technology, health care and financial companies outweighed gains elsewhere in the market.     The selling snapped a three-day winning streak for the S&P 500 and wiped out the index's 0.2% gain last week.   Trading was mostly muted as investors looked ahead to a busy week of economic reports and an interest rate policy update from the Federal Reserve. The market also remained focused on developments in the trade negotiations between the U.S. and China.   Both sides have been working toward a limited "phase 1" deal that investors hope can at least avert new U.S. tariffs from kic...Keep on reading: US stocks close broadly lower on Wall Street; trade in focus

Many physicians and even patients still could not accept that optimal medical treatment (OMT), on top of a healthy lifestyle, has been shown in a landmark study to be just as good as invasive treatment ---including heart bypass surgery---in patients with blocked arteries with a pattern of chest pains (stable ischemic heart disease). We wrote about it two weeks ago ("Healthy lifestyle, meds can relieve blocked heart arteries," Nov. 26), but we have to clarify that OMT will not relieve blockages in the heart arteries. It will relieve only the angina or chest pains caused by blocked arteries. This is due to several mechanisms, including reducing the oxygen demand of the heart, increas...Keep on reading: Why a scar from bypass surgery shouldn’t be a symbol of machismo

The need for a Parapsychology course
It may surprise you if I say there's no such thing as "paranormal." What people consider paranormal is really "normal" if we consider other-dimension realities. Things are called paranormal only because they cannot be explained by conventional or mainstream science, such as telepathy, spirit manifestations, teleportation, bilocation or telekinesis. But these phenomena are normal and not supernatural. Mind-to-mind communication or telepathy, for example, is natural and has been documented as occurring between two or more people since the beginning of recorded history.
