No black sand mining in Cagayan River, firm assures

MANILA, Philippines --- The Pacific Offshore Exploration Inc. (POEI) on Wednesday vowed that no black sand mining would take place in dredging operations at the mouth of Cagayan River in Aparri, Cagayan. The firm's legal counsel, Dominador Say, said this during a session of the Provincial Board of Cagayan, amid allegations of black sand mining activities in the dredging project which seeks to make way for the reopening of the Port of Aparri. The board earlier appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to stop the dredging as it posed a threat to the environment and the livelihood of residents. Of drugs and love affairs—or why have a Matteo-and-Anne weekend
Last Thursday was movie marathon night, but guests invited to this private showing by Swatch lasted the entire time, from late afternoon to close to midnight, primarily because "Mina-Anud" and "Just a Stranger" were worth it. It was Virgie Ramos' endearing way of supporting two artists she admires, Matteo Guidicelli and Anne Curtis. Ramos, the maverick entrepreneur behind the Swiss brand in the Philippines, wanted friends and colleagues to see these movies at the Director's Lounge at The Podium, not only because of Matteo and Anne, but also because of their interesting stories. "Mina-Anud," directed by Kerwin Go, stars Dennis Trillo, Jerald Napoles and Guidicelli in a special r...Keep on reading: Of drugs and love affairs—or why have a Matteo-and-Anne weekend

COA flags LLDA for failure to collect P29.46M in fees
MANILA, Philippines --- The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) has failed to collect some P29.46 million in required fees in 2018 from operators of fish pens and fish cages in Laguna de Bay, according to the Commission on Audit (COA).   In its annual audit report, the COA said that of the 3,308 fish cage and fish pen owners, only 110 or 3.3 percent paid their dues.   Under existing rules, the LLDA is required to collect P6,000 per hectare covered by fish pens, and P4,200 per hectare occupied by fish cages.   If the fees are uncollected, the agency withholds the issuance of annual permits.   "In 2018, it appears that the delinquent operato...Keep on reading: COA flags LLDA for failure to collect P29.46M in fees

Gina Lopez: Breaking the norm, she made friends and foes
Close to her last day on earth, Gina Lopez was still giving encouraging words to friends and coworkers to push on with their projects to protect the environment and help impoverished communities even as she was losing her own battle with cancer.   Jen Santos, director of Bantay Kalikasan, ABS-CBN Foundation's environmental arm, had gotten in touch with Lopez at the hospital more than a week before she died to give her some good news---the establishment of two new project sites for poor and indigenous communities in Samar province.   "She replied that she was proud of what the organization has achieved," Santos said. Will scream, will spend – all for ‘saranghaeyo!’
The very picture of unrequited love, a K-pop fan stood beside the barricade of a concert ground, desperate for a single glance, a quick touch and the music of that declaration of love: "Saranghaeyo." But despite the shortness of her breath and the chilling in her bones, she had never felt more alive. "My biggest achievement as a fan was being able to stand beside the stage barricade," says Lorraine Toledo, a 23-year-old medical student and fan of the K-pop group iKON. But at least it works as a showcase for the thespically sublime Mylene Dizon, whose performance is way better than the movie itself.   On the other hand, Danica Sta.
