U.S. House cancels Thursday session after police warn of possible plot on Capitol

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House of Representatives canceled its planned Thursday session after the Capitol Police warned on Wednesday of a possible plot by a militia group to breach the building, an threat that echoed the deadly Jan. 6 attack. The House had been scheduled to debate and vote on a police reform bill on Thursday. But a House Democratic aide said that the police warning, based on intelligence that "an identified militia group" could present a security threat, contributed to the change in plans. Authorities have said right-wing extremists were part of a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump that stormed the Capitol in January, interrupti...

Spaniard gets heart transplant call as wife gives birth
MADRID --- He was just about to witness the birth of his first child when the long-awaited call came: Doctors had found him a compatible heart and were ready to do the transplant. For 39-year-old Antonio Salvador, who had been waiting years for a new heart, it was a day in which two life-changing events miraculously coincided at Madrid's Gregorio Maraon hospital. "When I went into surgery I wasn't yet a father. I spoke to my wife on a video call and we wished each other luck," he said in a statement released on Friday by the hospital ... When I woke up, there was twice the sense of delight," said Salvador, who suffers from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a hereditary disease of the he...Keep on reading: Spaniard gets heart transplant call as wife gives birth

Embracing the light: Churches tap solar power
MANILA, Philippines --- In the past few years, Bishop Gerardo Alminaza of the Diocese of San Carlos in Negros Occidental has been at the frontline of a crusade waged both from the pulpit and on the streets. Alminaza, 61, is part of the Philippine Catholic Church's strong opposition to the use of fossil fuels in the country. And the threat to the diocese looms large: a proposed 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in its coastal city. But the bishop understands that beyond dialogues and campaigns, the Church can and should be doing more to demonstrate its seriousness in rejecting fossil fuels. "We cannot just oppose and oppose," he says. "We have to be more proactive." Happily...Keep on reading: Embracing the light: Churches tap solar power

DFA awaits probe of Ayungin incident
MANILA, Philippines --- The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has deferred any action on the incident in which Chinese ships prevented a fishing boat carrying Filipino journalists from going to Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea to interview fishermen. The DFA on Saturday said state agencies were investigating the incident and advised those who were planning to visit the maritime features within the country's 370-kilometer exclusive economic zone (EEZ) to "coordinate" with the authorities. "If proven to be true, the [DFA] will raise the matter with the Chinese government," the department said in a brief statement. "In the meantime, the department is thankful that the crew a...Keep on reading: DFA awaits probe of Ayungin incident

Against KO-hunting foe, Ancajas vows to put on a performance that will open door to bigger fights
Filipino champ Jerwin Ancajas loves to mimic the moves of his idol, Manny Pacquiao, throwing 1-2 combinations followed by ducks, slides and turns. There are some who would go as far as to say he looks better performing the moves than the boxing legend himself. And yet Ancajas is in danger of becoming just another world boxing champion with hardly any memorable moments in the ring despite holding the International Boxing Federeation junior bantamweight title for six years. He gets a chance to redirect his career path Sunday morning, Manila time. Ancajas is hoping to become more than just a minor blip on the radar screens of top-class boxing when he takes on a danger...Keep on reading: Against KO-hunting foe, Ancajas vows to put on a performance that will open door to bigger fights

With the aim of making women visible in PBA, Belen forges her path at TNT
When a door was shut on Maureen Belen, another one opened. Not just a door, actually---a huge rollup steel gate leading to the brightest lit sporting arena in the country. Unable to snare a gig in the trailblazing Women's National Basketball League, Belen instead found herself making history in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) as a member of comebacking champion mentor Chot Reyes' coaching staff at TNT. "I get chills really just thinking about it," Belen told the Inquirer recently. "Most girls [in this sport] have been working hard and dedicating so much of their time [to their craft]. And they are doing so without seeing any finish line." She's giving those girls som...Keep on reading: With the aim of making women visible in PBA, Belen forges her path at TNT

Cone on bubble II: For passion, love and only as last resort
One of the few people who spent the most time inside the Philippine Basketball Association's bio-secure and excruciating environment doesn't mind going through the ordeal for the second time. But only as a last resort. "I think the coaches, the players, they'd welcome going into the bubble if that's the only recourse we have to start playing again," coach Tim Cone said during an appearance in The Chasedown on Saturday afternoon. The Barangay Ginebra coach is a firm believer that like himself, most PBA coaches "just want to get back to work and start playing again.""That's our passion, that's our love," Cone went on.It would seem easy for the Gin Kings' mentor to whip out such pr...Keep on reading: Cone on bubble II: For passion, love and only as last resort

Scorched–but not by the Manila heat
As we stay home and/or work from home, we can't help but miss restaurant food. Sure, nothing can beat home-cooked food, but once in a while---or maybe several times a week---we still crave food that we can't exactly replicate at home. Like smoked ribs. That is why I was so happy when my friend, let's call her Madame M, sent over a kilo of ready-to-heat smoked ribs. It was fall-off-the-bone tender and very tasty that I made a mental note to find out more about the restaurant that it came from. The pretty white box that the ribs came in was labeled Scorched. Apparently, it is a new restaurant. They just opened in 2019 at an obscure food hall of sorts near UST. Jus...Keep on reading: Scorched–but not by the Manila heat
