Andrew Luck makes the decision of his life, for his life
The timing was bad, but even worse was the reaction of the fans who took it upon themselves to boo Andrew Luck the last time he walked off a football field in an Indianapolis Colts uniform. He made the only decision he could for his health and happiness. They responded by robbing him of what he so richly deserved for putting his body on the line for the Colts --- one final moment to savor the game he still loves despite all the pain it has cost him. "I'd be lying if I didn't say I heard the reaction," Luck said after it was all finally over for good Saturday night in Indianapolis. "Yeah, it hurt. I'll be honest, it hurt." Fans will be fans, of course, especially after a nigh...Keep on reading: Andrew Luck makes the decision of his life, for his life

2019 US Open: Williams-Osaka reverberations felt a year later
As the start of the 2019 U.S. Open approaches, the indelible image from last year's tournament does not involve a particularly remarkable shot or a champion holding a trophy. Instead, it is, and likely forever will remain, Serena Williams pointing her index finger at chair umpire Carlos Ramos while insisting that he owed her an apology after they clashed during the women's final. The tenor of that matchbetween Williams --- who then was, and currently is, seeking a 24th Grand Slam singles trophy --- and Naomi Osaka --- whose terrific performance during a 6-2, 6-4 victory largely was ignored amid the chaos that enveloped Arthur Ashe Stadium that day --- shifted after Ramos warned...Keep on reading: 2019 US Open: Williams-Osaka reverberations felt a year later

Brazil’s Bolsonaro causes global outrage over Amazon fires
PORTO VELHO, Brazil --- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has insulted adversaries and allies, disparaged women, blacks and homosexuals, and even praised his country's 1964-1985 dictatorship. Yet nothing has rallied more anger at home and criticism from abroad than his response to fires raging in parts of the Amazon region. The far-right populist leader initially dismissed the hundreds of blazes and then questioned whether activist groups might have started the fires in an effort to damage the credibility of his government, which has called for looser environmental regulations in the world's largest rainforest to spur development. In response, European leaders threat...Keep on reading: Brazil’s Bolsonaro causes global outrage over Amazon fires

2019 US Open: What to know, from Serena Williams to the Big 3
NEW YORK --- At first glance, this U.S. Open might appear as unpredictable as any. From recent injuries to players such as Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep, to a bit of pre-tournament shakiness from Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, to Rafael Nadal's issues on hard courts, to the group of up-and-coming men's issues at Wimbledon, it's difficult to predict what will unfold at Flushing Meadows over the next two weeks. And yet this much is clear with main-draw action set to start Monday: If they're healthy, then the expected champions will come from a small group of women that includes Williams, Osaka and Halep and the members of the men's Big Three. Cuba falls in love again with the beard — and it’s not about Fidel Castro
Cubans and beards have gone hand in hand, or cheek by jowl, since the days of Fidel Castro's revolution, but after falling out of favor, facial hair is back, and this time, it's not political. Cuba's old guard, for the most part, no longer sport iconic beards, but the youngsters do. Clean-shaven President Miguel Diaz-Canel's government only features one hirsute minister, vice-president Ramiro Valdes, 87. Having a beard these days on the streets of Havana is definitely more a question of style. "Lately there are a lot of people, especially young guys, who are letting their beards grow. It's a trend," said barber David Gonzalez, 31, as he trimmed a customer's goatee in his cit...Keep on reading: Cuba falls in love again with the beard — and it’s not about Fidel Castro
