Out of office: how the pandemic is rewriting the workplace novel
A new crop of novels are exploring work culture and burnout – yet for many, the office feels like a distant memory. In the light of coronavirus, where will this literature go next? What has become of the office? Its small, mundane daily rituals, its smells – of over-boiled coffee, synthetic fabrics, other people’s perfume – the low hum of phone conversations and the whirring of the printer. To those of us who are still working from home, it feels like a faraway place, a half-forgotten memory, and to those who have returned it is utterly transformed: masked, distanced, hushed. It’s a strange time to be appraising the workplace novel. Will things return to how they were before, or will we look back on our time of working long, gruelling hours in the office with relief, or even nostalgia? I wonder if books set in offices will make us wistful about some aspects of pre-pandemic life or if, instead, these narratives will act as a warning against returning to a working culture that felt, to many of us, unreliable and unstable. Marriage doesn’t work (just ask Bill and Melinda) – so let me present some alternatives | Hadley Freeman
I find the idea of being legally bound to my partner unacceptably claustrophobicA lot has been said about the end of Bill and Melinda Gates’ marriage, mainly by people who have as much insider intelligence on it as I do, which is to say, none at all. But there really is only one conclusion to draw from this story: marriage doesn’t work.Look, I’m not saying that Bill Gates is the earthly representation of love incarnate. But if two people who have more homes than most people have shoes, own more farmland than any other private landowner in the US and have a private jet (no fighting about whose fault it is you missed the flight when you own the plane!) can’t make it, who can? Of course, there’s more to a successful marriage than money, such as shared experiences. Well, Bill and Melinda vaccinated the world. That seems like something you might bond over, right? “Hey honey, remember that time we eradicated polio?” That’s got to be better than reminiscing about the last holiday you took before the kids were born, like the rest of us do. Didn’t that give them a warm and fuzzy feeling inside? The answer, as we all now know, was no. Continue reading...

The Green party is showing Labour how to connect with its former heartlands | Lynsey Hanley
Rather than campaigning on the climate crisis, the party has won people’s support by focusing on their local environmentsIn the week before the Hartlepool byelection, a still loyal Labour voter gave a bleak assessment of her hometown to a reporter from the Financial Times. “We are at the arse-end of the world, just a sprawling housing estate. We don’t really make anything any more.”The floppy union jack hanging outside Labour’s Hartlepool HQ at the insistence of Keir Starmer’s London-based team turned out to confirm, rather than refute, that verdict. In the absence of making things, Labour tried to make meaning through the display of empty symbols and lost, catastrophically. But there’s another way to create something meaningful: by building relationships. This is where, away from the byelection media frenzy, the Green party excelled in some of last week’s other elections for local councils in England. Continue reading...

Cabinet Office blocks publication of Lord Mountbatten’s diaries
University of Southampton spends ‘hundreds of thousands’ on legal battle preventing access due to government vetoWhen the diaries and letters of Lord and Lady Mountbatten were “saved for the nation” in 2010, it should have created an invaluable public resource. Instead, a writer has spent four years and £250,000 of his own money in an ongoing – but still frustrated – attempt to force Southampton University and the Cabinet Office to allow the public to view them. The university bought the Broadlands archive, named after the Mountbattens’ Grade I-listed house, for £2.8m in 2010, attracting funding by stating it would “preserve the collection in its entirety for future generations to use and enjoy” and “ensure public access”. 12 Influencers Are Behind Most Anti-Vaccine Hoaxes On Social Media
Startling research has revealed that only a dozen people are responsible for most of the hoaxes and lies about Covid-19 vaccines on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.Yet social media companies have failed to adequately police the dangerous misinformation and its spreaders, according to the organisation that listed what it called the “Disinformation Dozen.”The misinformation super-spreaders are continuing to fuel vaccine reluctance among millions of people, which threatens to become a major hurdle to conquering the pandemic. The “Disinformation Dozen” produce 65% of the shares of anti-vaccine misinformation on social media platforms, concluded the nonprofit Center for Countering Digital Hate. The report, released in March, noted that “living in full view of the public on the internet are a small group of individuals who do not have relevant medical expertise and have their own pockets to line, who are abusing social media platforms to misrepresent the threat of Covid and spread misinformation about the safety of vaccines.”“Anti-vaccine activists on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter reach more than 59 million followers, making these the largest and most important social media platforms for anti-vaxxers,” it added.Particularly troubling, the anti-vaxxers are using these social media platforms to specifically “target Black Americans, exploiting higher rates of vaccine hesitancy in that community, to spread conspiracies and lies about the safety of Covid vaccines,” the report said. The disinformation peddlers are anti-vaccine advocates, alternative health entrepreneurs and physicians, some of whom run multiple accounts across the platforms and profit by selling supplements and books. Among the 12 named in the report are Joseph Mercola, who sells dietary supplements, and his business partner Erin Elizabeth, who runs an alternative-health website. Also listed is Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the late US Senator Robert F. Kennedy and chairman of Children’s Health Defense, a US anti-vaccine group. In a follow-up report on Thursday, the organisation called on social media platforms to take more decisive action to eradicate dangerous misinformation about the vaccines. “Big Tech’s failure to act on the Disinformation Dozen resulted in 105 pieces of vaccine disinformation being viewed up to 29 million times in the past month,” the update said.Members of US Congress and state attorneys general have strongly urged Facebook and Twitter to ban the 12 influencers. The social media companies have been reluctant to banish them but have cracked down in other ways by labelling posts as misleading, removing outright lies and banning some repeat offenders.Facebook moved on Thursday against several of the accounts, according to NPR, which was the first to report the new research. The company has now removed 16 accounts linked to the dozen from Facebook or Instagram and has placed restrictions on 22 others, including blocking them from promoting themselves through paid ads, NPR reported Thursday.Vaccine Reality Check7 Things To Remember If You’re Worried About The VaccineConcerned By How Quickly The Covid Vaccine Was Developed? UK’s top universities fearful of extra student numbers if A-level grades are high
With teacher-assessed grades this summer expected to result in more top marks, universities are worried about space in halls and staffingHeads of some of the UK’s elite universities fear they may be forced to take thousands of extra students they feel they do not have room for this summer, if teacher-assessed A-levels lead to far more 18-year-olds achieving the grades they need to obtain a place.During last summer’s A-level fiasco, when thousands of students had their A-levels marked up at the last minute, some elite universities accepted up to a third more students than planned because so many met their offer grades. This year, teacher-assessed A-levels are widely expected to result in far more students with top grades again, leaving some universities worrying about how they will cope. Continue reading...

Zachary Quinto And Billy Porter To Voice Gay Dads On New Disney+ Series
The Proud Family is going to have some brand new additions when it returns to our screens next year. Disney+ this week unveiled artwork and voice cast additions for the forthcoming reboot of the beloved animated series, which concluded its original run 16 years ago.Slated for release in 2022, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder will star Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter as Randall and Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins.The characters are described as a mixed-race gay couple who are the adoptive parents of 14-year-old activist Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, another new addition who will be voiced by Keke Palmer. EJ Johnson, who is the son of NBA legend Magic Johnson, is also joining the cast as Michael Collins, described in press notes as a gender-nonconforming trendsetter who serves up “fierce looks at school and on the basketball court”.Michael did appear in the original Proud Family series, when the character was voiced by Phil LaMarr. The Proud Family was hailed as a culturally inclusive milestone for children’s entertainment when it premiered on the Disney Channel in 2001, thanks to its predominantly Black cast of characters. The original series followed the adventures of 14-year-old Penny Proud (Kyla Pratt), and her eccentric family.  A holiday-themed episode in the show’s debut season won praise for exploring the traditions of Kwanzaa.Fans may also recall the show’s infectious theme song, which was performed by Destiny’s Child and Solange Knowles.  A made-for-TV feature film, The Proud Family Movie, aired in 2005 as the series finale. Last year, Disney+ announced that most of the original Proud Family cast would return for the reboot. In addition to Kyla Pratt, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder will feature Tommy Davidson as Oscar Proud, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy Proud, Cedric the Entertainer as Uncle Bobby and Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer. In recent weeks, Zachary Quinto has been doing promo with Jim Parsons for the documentary Tennessee & Truman: An Intimate Conversation, in which the two actors provide voiceovers as writers Tennessee Williams (Quinto) and Truman Capote (Parsons).Billy Porter is currently starring in the third and final series of Pose, which began airing in the US earlier this month.Later this year, he’ll be seen as the Fab G ― a genderless fairy godparent ― in the new film adaptation of Cinderella, co-starring Camila Cabello. HuffPost may receive a share from purchases made via links on this page.
