Andy Murray backs calls to remove Margaret Court's name from tennis arena

Values at odds with ‘what tennis stands for’Court opposes same-sex marriage and trans athletes

Andy Murray thinks the Australian Open should consider removing Margaret Court’s name from the arena at Melbourne Park as he says the multiple grand slam champion’s values are at odds with what tennis stands for.

The 78-year-old Court, who holds the all-time record of 24 major singles titles, has been heavily criticised for voicing her religious-based opposition to same-sex marriage and transgender athletes.

The best autumn makeup, whatever the season holds | Sali Hughes
Ringing the changes might seem pointless right now, but a slash of fresh colour can be cheering, even at homeIt’s around this time each year when beauty houses release their autumn makeup looks, deepening the summer colour palette, adding a little more polish, laying the groundwork for party season. All of which has about as much relevance in 2020 as a record attempt for the most people in a hot tub. Is there any point in ringing the changes when life for many people currently seems to be one interminable Sunday spent in a hoodie and pants?Predictably, I think there is. A new colour, an extra bit of effort, a nudge out of one’s comfort zone is cheering for many of us, and it’s good to feel as if you’re still in the game. Lipstick may now be tricky outdoors, where it’s hidden or made fuzzy by the on-off-on hokey cokey of face masks. But I’ve been enjoying a slash of autumnal colour in my own home. MAC’s Marrakesh (£17.50) – the ultimate iconic 90s shade, relaunched – is an orangey-brick hue that’s perfect if you fear a true red but are bored with safe nudes. It’s technically a matte, but not by modern standards; it feels silky, looks vibrant, not flat, and manages to straddle the line between flattering and cool. It’s one of those rare shades that looks good on every skin colour. I love it with a brown eye pencil and some peachy blush. Continue reading...

UK universities predict record student dropout rate
Fears that young people have ‘lost the discipline of learning’ add to students’ money worries as part-time jobs dry upRecord numbers of young people in the UK are starting a university course this autumn, with many anxious to escape a collapsing employment market. But as students embark on a very different university experience, vice-chancellors are worried that many may not last the year.Universities are reporting unprecedented pressure on their student hardship funds, after the abrupt loss of thousands of part-time student jobs in bars, restaurants and shops as a result of the pandemic. They fear students will be much less able to cope with the demands of their course if they are preoccupied with serious worries about paying for food or rent. Continue reading...

In 2005, Helios flight 522 crashed into a Greek hillside. Was it because one man forgot to flip a switch?
The accident led to the deaths of 121 people, and an eight-year legal battle for engineer Alan Irwin. This is what happens when the finger of blame is pointed at you Early on the morning of 14 August 2005, Alan Irwin, then 44, was with his partner, Donna, and their two young children in an apartment in Larnaca, Cyprus. It was a convenient base, only minutes from the airport. Irwin was an aircraft engineer; he had become obsessed with the technical aspects of planes as a young man in the Royal Air Force, following in the footsteps of his father, also an aircraft engineer and pilot. “I enjoy being around machines,” Irwin says. “If they’re broken, they’re broken. You can’t get angry at them. People can be quite frustrating.”Irwin went on to work for airlines such as McAlpine Aviation and Monarch, and by 2005 had been a freelance licensed engineer for 15 years. The work suited him: it was well paid, and he liked to travel. He had worked in Kuwait, China, Malaysia, the Middle East, Africa, Mexico, Miami. Continue reading...

Masterstroke or mistake? Who cares, Bale's return to Spurs is intoxicating | Barney Ronay
The man in the YouTube reels may be seven years older but this is the kind of modern football moment too good not to enjoy As a long-term observer it is always tempting to look out for moments that capture the essence of modern football, those single images that really get its basic weirdness. A personal favourite is the terrifying cube of death built by Qatar 2022 on the banks of the Moskva river at the last World Cup, a beautiful glass and steel exhibition centre intended to generate a thrill of carefree excitement about the next global festival of football, but one that resembled simultaneously a giant haunted cancerous polyp overseen by alien lizard secret service personnel. There are plenty more everyday candidates. Gianni Infantino stepping on to a Gazprom private jet. Neymar running away from his teammates celebrating a goal by Neymar in an empty stadium where, just for a moment, the only audible sound is Neymar celebrating a goal by Neymar. Continue reading...
