Orchestral manoeuvres in a car park: does ENO's drive-in opera hit the high notes?
With the action updated to a London car park and the audience in cars, ENO’s La Bohème is Europe’s first live drive-in opera. Our writer hops on his bike to watch the action from his socially distanced concrete squareSweaty, hyperventilating and with frozen hands, I arrive at Europe’s first live drive-in opera like Mimi in La Bohème’s last act. Unlike the opera’s heroine, I can barely make myself understood by security staff, still less sing a showstopper that would have them sobbing in their Ford Focuses. Have you ever cycled up the hill to London’s Alexandra Palace? The unintended genius of English National Opera’s modern-day, 90-minute staging of Puccini’s opera is to spread the class politics from stage to audience. The VIPs are ushered to the best seats in the house – that’s to say cars parked near the stage. These are called “uber boxes”, though, as far as I can see, they are Toyota Priuses in which up to four people can sit. (There’s no need for a driver since these cars aren’t going anywhere.) Behind are the middle classes who’ve come in their own vehicles (£100 per car). Hotel Chocolat servers take orders for ice cream, chocolates and drinks. Surtitles above the stage tell drivers to tune their radios to 87.7FM to get the best audio, though quite a few have their windows open to hear the music from speakers placed around the car park. All the singers are miked. Continue reading...

Drag star Diane Chorley hits the big time: 'Death threats didn't stop me'
As the ‘Duchess of Canvey’ releases a greatest hits album, her creator relives an extraordinary journey from Southend to the West End via schoolteaching and Ibiza superclubs‘Diane is based around the strong women I knew when I was growing up,” says David Selley, reminiscing about his childhood in Southend-on-Sea. “You’d go to a pub and there’d be a woman at the bar smoking, with all these men hanging off every word. And she’d give you a little wink, and you’d be like, ‘You are the coolest human being who’s ever existed.’”We’re in the Glory pub in east London, where Selley’s alter ego – the 80s nightclub icon and so-called “Duchess of Canvey” Diane Chorley – first made her name almost a decade ago. Selley, 38, has never publicly stepped out from behind Chorley’s mask before. But today there’s a new album to promote – and a remarkable story to tell. Continue reading...

AG Cook: Apple review – magical shifts in tone
(PC Music)Abrasive techno and acoustic guitars collide on AG Cook’s second album in a monthLast month, the producer AG Cook released his debut album; a 49-track, seven-disc brain dump called 7G. After years honing his synthetic, plastic fantastic strand of pop, released under his divisive PC Music umbrella and expanded via production work for the likes of Charli XCX, Cook threw up some curveballs on his first set. Nestled in among the thundering panic-pop and un-ironic cheese were a clutch of singer-songwritery acoustic sketches including a cover of Blur’s Beetlebum. That fusion of hyperreality and direct naivety also permeates its 10-track follow-up. So the airy, Ash-referencing, acoustic-led opener Oh Yeah is immediately exploded by Xxoplex, an unholy alliance of pummelling beats, choral chants and pitched vocals. It’s a trick that’s played throughout, with the lo-fi, endearingly cutesy Beautiful Superstar (“you’re beautiful, you’ve got it all”) followed not long after by the abrasive techno instrumental of Airhead. Beta was one of three named storms in the Atlantic basin. If the system makes landfall in Texas, which forecasters predict it will sometime on Monday, it would be the ninth named storm to make landfall in the continental US in 2020.
