Paying nurses properly doesn't chime with the Tories' post-Covid vision for society | Zoe Williams
The government’s derisory 1% NHS offer shows they have no plans to rebalance the UK in favour of those who deserve better As children across the UK return to school, to classrooms of varying ventilation and not-yet-necessarily-vaccinated teachers, as nurses swallow their real-terms pay cut and carry on working, a pattern emerges: this is a government crossing the road to start a fight. It would not have involved a vast recalibration to add teachers to the priority list for vaccinations. Indeed, given that the vaccine is all that stands between us and the pandemic worsening, and as we watch schools reopening with bated breath to see what it does to transmission, it would have been eminently plausible to make the public health case for giving teachers a jab, without even muddying the waters with questions of gratitude or how left wing their unions are. There will never be a cuttlefish in the cabinet – and that makes me sad | Emma Beddington
Octopuses and their relatives are remarkably clever and controlled. How many of our top politicians can say the same?Back in the gentler days of the internet, before it was just bots and people shouting at tea, I had a blog, and through it, occasional exchanges with a woman I described as my “cephalopod correspondent”. She would write, sharing interesting titbits about squid behaviour, cuttlefish news and, once, a picture of “an Octopus cyanea on a penny”.I think of her often now, as every week it seems we learn something spectacular about the tentacular. Octopuses are competent and creative problem-solvers, can master mazes, and frequently escape from captivity. They can even predict the outcome of football matches (OK, possibly not, but octopus Paul’s strike rate was impressive). Our collective fascination only deepened with last year’s Netflix documentary My Octopus Teacher, a lovely exploration of the curiosity and resourcefulness of one uncommonly touching common octopus. Perhaps even better was the relatable recent revelation that octopuses sometimes punch their fish co-workers when on joint hunting missions: it has certainly deepened my respect for them. Acts of Desperation by Megan Nolan review – fierce novel of obsessive love
The Irish writer’s debut conjures an unhealthy relationship with passion, wit and insightThere are toxic relationships, and then there’s the relationship at the centre of Megan Nolan’s fearless debut. From compulsive beginning to violent end, the love affair between the novel’s narrator, a young university dropout in Dublin about whom we learn everything – everything – but her name, and the older Ciaran, a half-Danish poet, is supremely messed up.For a start, there’s the sheer weight of expectation that Nolan’s heroine brings to it. Love is “the great consolation”, she insists. She finds Ciaran so beautiful she worships him, rhapsodising about his truffle-scented mouth. Readers may not be so charmed. For a start, he doesn’t like modern fiction. He also loathes seeing his girlfriend drunk, which is problematic given that she marked the night of their meeting by getting so lit she burst the blood vessels around her eyes throwing up. Why was the warranty on my £469 scooter a non-starter?
When it failed because of ‘damp and cold weather’, a repair was a no-goI purchased a Xiaomi Mi electric scooter for £469 from Halfords on 1 July 2020. As the weather got colder I noticed it was losing power and speed, and at Christmas it completely stopped working and charging. It is under a two- year warranty.I contacted Halfords and returned the scooter as requested. I have been told that I must pay £285 for a repair as it was “out of warranty” due to liquid damage.
