The Social Dilemma: a wake-up call for a world drunk on dopamine?
The new Netflix docudrama is a valiant if flawed attempt to address our complacency about surveillance capitalismSpool forward a couple of centuries. A small group of social historians drawn from the survivors of climate catastrophe are picking through the documentary records of what we are currently pleased to call our civilisation, and they come across a couple of old movies. When they’ve managed to find a device on which they can view them, it dawns on them that these two films might provide an insight into a great puzzle: how and why did the prosperous, apparently peaceful societies of the early 21st century implode? The two movies are The Social Network, which tells the story of how a po-faced Harvard dropout named Mark Zuckerberg created a powerful and highly profitable company; and The Social Dilemma, which is about how the business model of this company – as ruthlessly deployed by its po-faced founder – turned out to be an existential threat to the democracy that 21st-century humans once enjoyed. Tim Garland: Refocus review – a classic 60s fusion revisited
(Edition)The saxophonist takes Stan Getz’s unique collaboration with Eddie Sauter in a bold new directionFocus was a 1961 album by Stan Getz, wildly adventurous at the time, in which Getz improvised tenor saxophone solos to music composed by Eddie Sauter, played by a small string orchestra. It’s widely regarded as a Getz masterpiece and a classic in its own right. Now Tim Garland has come up with “a reworking for our time”. Except for the first track, which is taken from part of it note-for-note, Refocus has little obvious connection with the original. But they do share one thing: neither is merely saxophone with string accompaniment. Sauter created seven complete compositions, leaving space for Getz to thread his melodic line through each one. In this case, Garland wrote his own compositions, but left two years before recording the solo part, so he came to it fresh. Stylistically, Tim Garland is half a century away from Getz, in his composition as well as his playing. The whole soundscape is heavier and sometimes darker, especially in pieces such as Dream State and Night Flight, while the saxophone ascends to stratospheric heights rarely attempted in the early 60s. Where Focus was charming, Refocus is challenging and definitely of our time. Continue reading...

I'd had enough of Zoom – until I took a homemade sushi class
At last, I have acquired a lockdown skill. Now I just need to work on the presentationIn 1994, or thereabouts, I was working the kind of hours that meant lunch was always eaten at my desk – and thanks to this, it was a period in my life that was very miserable. In the post-industrial wasteland around our office, there were no decent sandwich shops; the age of avocado on sourdough was still far in the future. But then, one day, the world turned on its axis. On this particular morning, the chief subeditor returned to her page proofs smugly bearing a bag from somewhere called Pret a Manger, out of which she produced a slim plastic box whose contents she proceeded to eat with small wooden chopsticks. The rest of us were agog. The dinky bottle of soy sauce! The little slices of pickled ginger! We were wasabi green with envy.Fifteen years later, and everything has changed. Thanks to the pandemic, offices everywhere are eerily empty, and the once near-ubiquitous Pret a Manger is embarking on a drastic programme of retrenchment. Meanwhile, sushi is no longer even remotely exotic; there are certain children of my acquaintance who regard a (clammy, tasteless) supermarket California roll as only a slightly more unusual treat than they do a bag of Monster Munch. Most unlikely of all from my point of view, I’ve recently learned to make my own sushi – something of which I am, as I write, embarrassingly proud. (I know this because when I put pictures of my first efforts on WhatsApp, my dear but plain-speaking friend, A, responded with a prawn emoji and … a string of expletives.) Continue reading...

Greener BP must do more than talk tough on the climate crisis
A company steeped in oil and gas production may not find it easy to convince investors of its environmental credentials‘This is serious stuff,” said BP’s Bernard Looney. The chief executive, speaking last week at the oil giant’s three-day investor event, was talking tough on the need to tackle the climate crisis. He could just as easily have been referring to the existential tightrope that BP, and others in the fossil fuel industry, will need to walk between investor confidence and the rising public pressure to slash their greenhouse gas emissions.Over the course of three days and 10 hours of executive presentations, Looney’s new leadership team sought to convince investors that their plan to become a carbon neutral company will allow them to toe this line successfully. BP’s nascent renewable energy interests will grow while the oil production business that has powered the company for over 110 years will begin to shrink within the next decade. A whiplash of clean energy innovation, carbon capture technologies and emissions offsetting schemes will then power the company to net zero carbon by 2050. Continue reading...

Suffering John Lewis stands at a crossroads on the high street
The retailer is eyeing a more online future. But as the last big department store standing, could it expand in the real world? Twinkling lights are just visible behind screens where staff are putting the finishing touches to this year’s Christmas displays, but in other parts of the shop, the lights are still off. John Lewis’s flagship store in Oxford Street, central London, is bearing the scars of the pandemic.A restaurant and cafe are closed and there are more staff than customers on the furnishings floor. The fashion floor is also a depressing sight, with tags flagging big discounts on racks of unwanted dresses and officewear. Last week it emerged John Lewis had applied for planning permission to convert entire floors of this shop into office space. It’s not hard to see why. Continue reading...

Heart and sole: a shoe designer’s Paris home
Daring colour mixes, striking furniture and footwear as decoration are the hallmarks of this townhouse in the 20th arrondissementThere’s something childish in the way I use colour,” says Gherardo Felloni, creative director of Roger Vivier. “In the last 20 years, designers went for beige or grey – safe colours. I am completely the opposite. I am spontaneous, and not afraid.”Step into his three-storey townhouse in the magical Campagne à Paris, a village of cobbled streets and Narnia lampposts in the 20th arrondissement to the east of the city centre, and daring mixes await. A painting of deep and luminous blues hangs in the more formal of two sitting rooms, a pair of 1960s tubular glass sconces originally from the palatial waiting room of the monumental Milan Centrale railway station either side of it. “They are massive, and quite special,” says Felloni, whose comparatively modest home was built as part of a development of 92 houses in the 1920s for working-class families.
