The 10 swing state counties that tell the story of the 2020 election | Ben Davis
Results of this election and the changes from past elections say an enormous amount about where the country is and is goingLooking at the results of the 2020 election at the more granular level of counties and precincts, it can mostly be defined by one thing: stasis. But beneath that stasis the results of this election and the changes from previous elections say an enormous amount about where the country is and is going. The counties that swung the most mostly fall into two categories: Latino areas swinging strongly towards Trump, and white-majority suburban areas swinging towards Biden. These 10 swing state counties were crucial to the final results, and help tell the story of what happened in 2020. Continue reading...

'Biggest sin in the programme': How a coat from The Undoing divided the internet
The ugly green coat in the HBO drama The Undoing has usurped a starry cast that includes Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. But what are the show’s makers trying to say, exactly? The real star of The Undoing, HBO’s absurd marital melodrama, is not Hugh Grant, the Manhattan skyline or even the pair of David Hockneys hanging inside a vast penthouse in episode one. It’s a coat.Sludge-green, calf-length, with wide lapels and a hood, this coat is worn again and again by Nicole Kidman’s character, a gnomic therapist called Grace, as she floats down Madison Avenue, through Central Park and even into the prison on Rikers Island, brooding over her marriage to a man who may, or may not, have just murdered his lover with a lump hammer. Overseas review – maids in training make haunting viewing
Sung-a Yoon’s stylised documentary of Filipina women training to work overseas is a powerful study of loneliness As a study of loneliness and suppressed fear, this stylised documentary from the Korean-born director Sung-a Yoon could hardly be improved on. It is a study of a training school in the Philippines for what are known as OFWs, or Overseas Filipino Workers. They are live-in maids who take two-year contracts, typically in the Middle East, and are prized for their submissive, hardworking attitudes and their perceived reluctance to make a fuss if they are abused. The women here recall that President Duterte himself has praised OFWs as “heroes” for bringing foreign currency into the Philippines. The film shows them learning how to do domestic work: cleaning, cooking, bathing children and elderly or disabled adults. It shows these women being lectured on how they must prepare for their terrible isolation and being separated from their children. Startlingly, the documentary also shows the role-play classes showing them how to absorb the abuse they will inevitably get, taking turns to play the mean mistress or master of the house shouting about how the bathroom has not been properly cleaned. They are told: “Never cry in front of your employer; it shows weakness. Filipinos are not weak.” Continue reading...
