Who are ballet flats really for? At £890, people with more money than sense | Zoe Williams
They started life as a Sloane staple, then graduated to ladette’s best friend. Now ballet flats are on the rise againIt’s the shoe that spring has been waiting for: the new Alaïa ballet flat. It is studded with clear crystals, giving the not displeasing impression that it doubles up as fashion item and street-fighting accessory. And it’s £890, which is wild for a shoe that doesn’t even run to the expense of a heel. But you don’t need to worry, because they’re sold out. All the fashion editors bought a pair, apparently. And that’s fine, because they almost never kick each other.Disregarding the chic years we are all too young to remember, when ballet flats were associated with Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn, they started life as a Sloane staple. It was never obvious why the kind of woman who wore an alice band and a pie-crust collar would need quick-getaway footwear, but these connections were incredibly tight; there was a whole era when to wear a ballet flat and not also own a horse was like an act of fraud. Robot Dreams review – tender dog-and-robot love story set in old-school New York
The Oscar-nominated animated short brims with beautifully drawn detail, not least in its re-creation of the ungentrified 1980s-era cityThere’s sweetness, sadness and charm in this animated tale about the friendship – and possibly more – between a dog and a robot in 1980s New York. It’s a universe entirely populated by anthropomorphised animals; no humans and no dialogue. The director is Pablo Berger, working from a script he cowrote with Sara Varon, adapting her 2007 graphic novel. Their story is laced with comedy, tenderness, loneliness and friendship; in truth, it’s probably a bit too slow for most under-10s. The best thing about it will sail right over pint-sized heads, for sure: the lovingly realised old-school New York, scuzzy and ungentrified, with graffiti and trash, crackling with edge and energy. In a New York apartment block, Dog spends solitary nights eating ready-meal macaroni for one. (Inside his microwave, thick globs of cheese spit like boiling hot lava; the animation is an absolute delight.) Dog’s lonely days are over when he buys a friendship robot, the Amica 2000. The pair become best pals (though the way they hold hands suggests there might be more to it). Robot’s lust for life is infectious: joyfully watching a busking octopus drumming in the subway; feeling the sand beneath his metal toes at Coney Island. (My favourite image of the movie is a rhino sunbathing in a bikini thong.) Continue reading...

Revealed: documents shed light on shadowy US far-right fraternal order
New documents detail inner workings of Society for American Civic Renewal, group with an emphasis on Christian nationalismNew documents have shed light on the origins and inner workings of the shadowy Society for American Civic Renewal (SACR), including methods for judging the beliefs of potential members on topics such as Christian nationalism, and indications that its founders sought inspiration in an apartheid-era South African white men-only group, the Afrikaner-Broederbond.They also show that Boise State University Professor and Claremont thinktank scholar Scott Yenor tried to coordinate SACR’s activities with other initiatives, including an open letter on “Christian marriage”. ‘So dehumanising’: Prem Sahib on making an artwork out of a Suella Braverman speech
The artist, who took lockers from a gay sauna into galleries, has turned the former home secretary’s speech about the illegal migration bill into a sinister sonic maelstromPrem Sahib’s most disconcerting sculptures include a giant flea, a pair of hoodies suspended in the jaundiced glow of a sodium street lamp, and a cracked obsidian mirror which emits real-life hate speech recorded in a gay chatroom. His latest work is inspired by a figure arguably more sinister than anything he has previously confronted: Suella Braverman.Alleus – the title is “Suella” spelt backwards – is a sound sculpture which aims to “send back” one of the former home secretary’s speeches, making her eat her words. Taking as its starting point a recording of Braverman addressing the House of Commons about the illegal migration bill, Sahib slows down her voice, isolates incendiary phrases, then reverses the audio until it becomes a tangle of nightmarish noise and backbench braying. In doing so, he seems to dredge up some primordial toxicity from within Braverman’s words. Continue reading...
