George M Johnson: 'Queer characters tend to die at the end of books'
The bestselling author on their memoir about growing up gay and black in the US, helping others to find healing, and the power of non-binary young adultsGeorge M Johnson is a writer and activist whose first book, All Boys Aren’t Blue, is a memoir about growing up black and queer in America. The book is aimed at young adults and catalogues in candid style the author’s experiences of both trauma and healing, from childhood bullying to teenage sexual abuse, to their relationship with their family and changing understanding of their masculinity and sexuality. It was published in the US last year to widespread acclaim, reviewers describing it as a “gamechanger”, offering “a deep but clear-eyed love for its subjects”. It has been optioned for television by actor and activist Gabrielle Union. Johnson lives in Newark, New Jersey. When did you know you wanted to write your story?I knew it was time when Giovanni Melton was killed by his father, who said something to the effect of: “I would rather have a dead son than a gay son.” That was November 2017 and I was like: “This has got to stop.” So many black, queer young men being taken from us… We have to talk about it. People need to know that we are your sons and brothers, your non-identifying friends and family members, we are genderless people who exist among you – but we deserve to do more than just exist. It was time for me to write the story of what it is like to grow up knowing, from a very young age, that you do not fit into this mould of what it means to look like a boy in society. Pep Guardiola and City have eased back to take a huge leap forward | Jonathan Wilson
Manchester City have changed the way they press and, though West Ham did offer some hope to the chasing pack, a quadruple suddenly looks possibleIt is a measure of how well West Ham played at Manchester City that for a time it felt like a contest. City won in the end – of course they did – to take their run of successive victories to 20, but there were perhaps 10 minutes before half-time when they were unsettled. But by the end, the only question was how this run can ever be stopped: City at the moment feel relentless. The Premier League title is as good as done, they’re 2-0 up after the away leg of their Champions League last-16 tie, they’re in the quarter-final of the FA Cup and the final of the Carabao Cup: a quadruple suddenly looks distinctly possible. And it is sudden: it’s only 74 days since City drew at home against West Brom, a result that left them ninth in the table. The suggestion then was that this might be the weakest side Pep Guardiola have ever managed. Continue reading...

Rosamund Pike is right to call out digital 'tweaks' ... but aren't we all at it? | Barbara Ellen
The deceit of unreal perfection is no longer Hollywood’s alone. Deep-fake is everywhereIf Rosamund Pike isn’t “good enough” , then where does that leave the rest of us? The actor says that her breasts were enlarged by Photoshop for a publicity poster for the 2011 Johnny English Reborn film. Looking at the image, they do seem markedly bigger. Of course it had to be her breasts that were blown up like party balloons. In the same image, no one appears to have said: “Put Rowan Atkinson’s crotch on display, and make it bulge.”Pike says she got the poster stopped, which might surprise people. Actresses are supposed to be grateful for these digital “tweakments”: “Thank you, camera-gods, for making me even prettier!” Continue reading...
