The polls are ignoring a crucial factor in this election: minority voters | Omar Khan
There are more black and Asian voters than Scottish or Lib Dem voters. Yet there is a startling lack of interest in themWhat would happen if all the analysis of this election omitted Scotland? Or if the polls that increasingly inform our understanding and analysis of politics decided it wasn’t worth examining the views of those aged 18-24? How about if journalists decided that they should ignore Liberal Democrat supporters, irrelevant as we know how they’re going to vote? There would be some outrage, surely. Forget leaflets: this election may be decided by shifting populations | Gaby Hinsliff
Last-minute campaigning may have little impact. Instead, the changing make-up of towns and cities holds the keys to No 10What is the point of political campaigning? It’s bordering on heresy even to ask this question, let alone to suggest that six manic weeks of battle buses and TV debates and leaflets destined only for the recycling bin might not be worth the millions they cost. So we political junkies carry on parsing every throwaway remark for meaning, obsessing over every stunt and gaffe, searching for that one mythical moment that will in retrospect seem to have changed everything. If nothing else, it’s comforting to think there must be some kind of logic to it. Related: Labour has a week to turn this election into a winter war on austerity | Frances Ryan Continue reading...

Andrew Sparrow's election briefing: no tax rises and no interviews either, says PM
Catch up with the campaign with our daily roundup Latest from the campaign trail - live Boris Johnson has refused to accept that the overall tax burden would rise under Conservative manifesto plans - despite the fact that the party says so quite openly in its costings documents. He was asked about it after the Conservatives released a briefing saying that a Tory budget in February would “cut taxes for hardworking families”. When reporters put it to him that the overall tax burden was set to rise in the first Tory budget according to CCHQ’s own figures (mostly because a corporation tax cut has been abandoned, and that counts as a tax rise), Johnson claimed not to be aware of this. He told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg: “We’re cutting taxes on national insurance contributions and on business rates, and I’m certainly not aware of the data you describe. We’re cutting taxes. And in our first budget we propose to do more to cut taxes.” Continue reading...
