Manchester City fans pour into Istanbul ready to see off ‘City-itis’
After decades of sometimes comical failure, supporters are confident their lavishly-backed club are on the cusp of a trebleAs they introduced their sky blue shirts to Istanbul’s blue mosque and posed beside a giant cup on Taksim Square, there was a question on the lips of many of the older fans in particular: could this really be the moment they officially vanquish the curse of “City-itis”?A win on Saturday evening against Internazionale of Italy in Istanbul’s 75,000-capacity Atatürk Olympic Stadium will not only deliver Manchester City their first Champions League – the club’s second piece of European silverware in its 140 year history – but complete what newspapers are duty bound to report as the “historic treble”: a slam-dunk haul of the Uefa Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League title. Wearing The Wrong Clothes Will Get You A Serious Fine At This Popular Holiday Destination
Brits abroad be warned – don’t flaunt too much flesh in the Balkans. The Croatian city of Split has issued a ban on wearing a bikini and going shirtless in the old city centre – following the lead of Dubrovnik, another of the country’s historic cities. It comes after a decision by Split City Council earlier this year and is intended to crackdown on disorder in the city’s cultural and historic centre, according to Croatia Week. The new bylaw reads: “Inside Zone A (cultural-historical centre) it is forbidden be in a bathing suit, underwear or no clothes in a public space.” The cost for over exposure? A fine of £129 (€150).The same punishment, dished out by council enforcers patrolling the city’s streets, is levied on drinking in public, while walking a dog without a leash will trigger a £56 (€66) levy.Meanwhile, travel advice for Croatia on the UK’s foreign office website warns of fines as high as £3,400 (€4,000) for “actions considered to be disturbances to public order” for disorder in town centres.“These include fighting, verbal abuse and drunken behaviour,” it states under a list of “what not to do” when enjoying a trip to the Balkan country.“Most towns have signage to advise about actions that are prohibited by local law. Take notice of your surroundings, including signage, and seek local advice.“Drug related offences are punishable with fines and jail sentences.”Related...What To Do If You're Seated By An Unruly Passenger On A FlightThe Biggest Mistakes People Make When Booking HotelsSpain's New Tourist Rules Could See Brits Fined £650 In Holiday Hotspot

Grange festival: Così fan tutte review – probing and insightful staging is wonderfully conducted by Karabits
Grange festival, HampshireDirector Martin Lloyd-Evans prises open Mozart’s opera’s emotional complexity in a production that might be set in traditional dress but engages with today’s concernsThis year’s Grange festival opens with a new production of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, conducted by Kirill Karabits and directed by Martin Lloyd-Evans. It’s a striking piece of theatre, at once traditional and probing: traditional because Lloyd-Evans and his designer Dick Bird keep the original 18th-century Neapolitan setting; probing because Lloyd-Evans carefully and insightfully prises open the opera’s emotional complexities, gradually exposing the moral and sexual hypocrisies at its centre. The production’s stance is established during the overture, when we see Guglielmo (Nicholas Lester) buy a locket for Fiordiligi (Samantha Clarke) from a vendor in a teeming Neapolitan street, then creep back to visit a brothel, from which he eventually emerges with Alessandro Fisher’s Ferrando and Christian Senn’s Alfonso, the three of them slightly the worse for wear. It soon becomes glaringly apparent that, in testing Fiordiligi’s fidelity, Guglielmo also intends to spend the winnings from his wager on prostitutes. Continue reading...

Rugby league in the USA: touring heroes, fights and a Vegas residency
Will the NRL’s new 10-season deal in Las Vegas help revive the colourful but fractured US rugby league scene?By Gavin Willacy for No Helmets RequiredThey were hanging off the rafters and window ledges. They were standing on rooftops and perched along precarious walls: Sydney Cricket Ground was overflowing. More than 65,000 people were inside and another 5,000 were locked out, scrambling for vantage points. But this was no Origin decider. Seventy years ago this week, the SCG was packed out for the visit of the American All Stars, a team of college football players who had no knowledge of rugby league just a month before.Three days later, to mark the Queen’s coronation, another 32,554 fans attended the SCG to watch the Americans score 41 points against a New South Wales side featuring Clive Churchill, Keith Holman, Noel Pidding and Harry Wells, courtesy of a generous display of defending and refereeing (albeit the Blues heaped on 62 points themselves). American half-back Gary Kerkorian, a Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback the previous season, scored all 13 of his kicks at goal that week. The future looked exhilarating. Continue reading...
