Middle East crisis live: Marwan Issa, key Hamas organiser behind 7 October attacks, killed, says US
White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Issa had been killed last week in an Israeli operationSee all our Israel-Gaza war coverageAmos Harel in Haaretz offers this analysis of the political calculations that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu may be making around any possible hostage deal. Harel writes:Political sources still believe that what motivates the prime minister above all is his political survival and hold on power as his criminal trial progresses. To this end, Netanyahu needs more time, and therefore any delay in indirect negotiations with Hamas serves his interests, despite his declared commitment to rescuing the hostages.Netanyahu’s opposition to a possible hostage deal does not appear to be principled or sweeping. From his perspective, the major problem is a prolonged ceasefire that could herald the end of the war. The structure of the deal currently being discussed speaks of a six-week ceasefire, during which a first tranche of Israeli hostages will be returned in exchange for the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, some of whom are considered high-profile. Even if talks run aground on a second phase of a deal – in which Israeli soldiers and younger men held by Hamas are expected to be released – it will probably be several more weeks before fighting resumes. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at 20: a love story that’s impossible to forget
Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet forget they used to be in love in a wonderfully inventive and moving reminder of why romantic pain is an important thing to rememberThe greatest screen romances are usually about failure, not happily ever afters. Love sacrificed. Love unrequited. Love forbidden by social mores or bad timing or the tectonic forces of history. Think Casablanca. Brief Encounter. In the Mood for Love. The Age of Innocence. Moonlight. Considered another way, though, they’re powerful because they end so pristinely, before the banal hassles and petty fissures of everyday life make a mess of things. Give a relationship enough time and Before Sunrise turns into Before Midnight. One of the reasons why Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, now 20 years old, ranks among the best love stories of the 21st century is that it makes the unique argument that failure is an essential, precious part of romantic experience. It’s only human to want that pain to go away, but the film suggests that literally making it so would be a wish on a monkey’s paw, offering some short-term relief, perhaps, but with unanticipated long-term consequences. People usually have many more failed relationships before one that succeeds, after all, and the accumulation of experience and memory not only means something, but that meaning isn’t static. Bitter moments can turn bittersweet. Continue reading...

Boarding schools can do tremendous harm. Charles Spencer’s bleak memoir proves it | Gaby Hinsliff
Many boys educated privately hand their trauma to the next generation – and, dangerously, to those who are raised to governCharles Spencer was just eight when he was sent away from home. Even before being packed off to boarding school, he was largely raised by nannies, in the remote aristocratic manner of the time. Lonely and vulnerable at his prep school, Maidwell Hall, which he describes as rife with schoolboy bullying and savage ritual beatings from masters, he was easy prey for the false comfort offered by a matron who he says sexually abused him from the age of 11. Later, he lost his virginity at 12 to a sex worker. It’s the kind of story that if he’d been born to a struggling single mother on a council estate would arguably have prompted a speedy referral to social services, and when the now Earl Spencer started writing out these memories he suffered a breakdown. But the resulting memoir, A Very Private School, is about more than one personal tragedy or one school. This bleak educational culture, he argues, was the petri dish in which so much of Britain’s current ruling class grew during the 1970s and 80s; a regime originally designed to cauterise young men’s emotions before sending them off to exercise power over far-flung corners of the British empire, and whose influence seemingly lingered well after the empire itself was gone.Gaby Hinsliff is a Guardian columnistDo you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? The cultural division of football fans only serves those who wish to exploit it | Jonathan Liew
The battle between ‘true fans’ and ‘plastics’ weakens the ties between supporters and their inclination to unite and organiseLeaving early is a bit of a red flag. Booing your own players, obviously. Wearing a half-and-half scarf, purchasing a half-and-half scarf, expressing any opinion of a half-and-half scarf short of pathological hatred: forget it. Fake merch. Supporting a club from a place where you do not live. Supporting more than one club. Getting fewer than 10 out of 15 on a multiple-choice clickbait quiz.Yes, these days there are multiple ways of outing yourself as that most abhorred of footballing species: “not a true fan”. Who gets to call themselves a football fan? Ostensibly this is a church open to all who want to believe, and yet somehow the very idea of fandom is constantly being challenged and contested, revoked and downgraded. English football has more words to describe ersatz fans than real ones: “plastics” and “casuals”, “fakes” and “frauds”, “tourists” and “day-trippers”, “trolls” and “haters”, “fair-weather fans” and “glory-hunters”. ‘People are anaesthetised to seeing rubbish everywhere’: the book unearthing waste in our seas
East Yorkshire artist Mandy Barker has found a way to make us look again at pollution – cataloguing fibres from fast fashion in the style of a Victorian book about British algaeWhen Mandy Barker stumbled upon a fragment of colour in a rock pool while walking near Spurn Point, East Yorkshire, in 2012, she was bewitched. “I thought it was a piece of seaweed with lovely colours on it – greeny-browny – but when I went to pick it out, I saw that it was actually a strip of clothing material,” she says.Growing up on the Yorkshire coast, Barker had become used to the coastline she once walked to collect driftwood shells changing around her. “Over the years I saw TVs, fridge freezers and computers washing up on the beach,” she said. “Fishers there told me they could see trawlers out at sea visibly dumping waste into the ocean. People would pay these trawlermen to take their rubbish out and dump it. And the fish were getting tangled up in it.” Continue reading...

Men enthusiastically express their heterosexuality in Ghana, so why is being queer so unacceptable? | Elliot Kwabena Akosa
Ghana is the latest state to suppress LGBTQ people, calling us un-African. But the ‘traditional culture’ they seek to protect was imposed by colonialism In the past 10 years, Ghana has transitioned from indifference towards LGBTQ+ people to outright hostility. The human sexual rights and family values bill doubles down on the banning of gay sex and prohibits the promotion or outward support of LGBTQ+ individuals. To the dismay of queer people and their allies in Ghana and across the world, this bill has been approved by parliament and is waiting to be signed into law by President Nana Akufo-Addo. The Joy of Six: football ‘houses, ‘housing and ‘housery | Daniel Harris
Mischief-makers and provocateurs in football, from Dennis Wise to Emmanuel Adebayor and moreIn traditional parlance, a shithouse is a toilet, but fear not, this is not a piece on Wembley’s … rustic bogs and nor – though the word has since evolved to mean “a filthy or disgusting place” – is this a piece on the conscience of certain politicians. Rather, given the extension of the term’s scope to characterise “an obnoxious or despicable person”, and though we already enjoy an ancient four-lettered one which satisfies that definition, it would be remiss – with all due respect to Steve McMahon – for us to begin with anyone other than Dennis Wise. José Pizarro’s recipe for hake with clams, chorizo and manzanilla
Crisp hake fillets with clams basted in a power-packed sauce of chorizo and dry sherry – let everyone dig in straight from the panToday’s recipe epitomises the vibrant spirit and rustic charm of so much Spanish cooking. I’ve always cherished the incredible power that food has to unite people, and to infuse gatherings with warmth and joy. This dish, a big favourite of my mother’s, uses succulent hake fillets and hearty clams, all bathed in a flavourful chorizo and sherry sauce. It’s essentially a tribute to Spain’s rich coastal traditions, but it also blends the earthiness of the land with the freshness of the sea, creating a glorious chorus of flavours. Perfect for sharing, it captures Spanish conviviality and the simple pleasures of a meal cooked with love. Continue reading...
