England v West Indies: T20 World Cup – live!
Live T20 World Cup updates from 3pm BSTBarney Ronay: Morgan merits chance to go out his own wayAnd you can email Tanya or tweet @tjaldredHello! So here we are on an autumnal English afternoon transported to a hot and steamy superstadium in Dubai. England’s T20 World Cup starts with a repeat of the 2016 final against West Indies. You remember the one - when at Eden Gardens Carlos Braithwaite rocketed Ben Stokes for four consecutive sixes, the inevitability of each one doubling with ever strike, to snatch the trophy from under England’s noses. There is no Stokes this time - though eleven of the same players will be on the field - offering players like Chris Woakes and Liam Livingstone a chance to step into his boots. No Brathwaite either - left dining on memories. Continue reading...

Nadia Whittome: ‘Parliament does strange things to you’
The Labour MP, 25, on eyebrows, her love of dancing and not earning more than the workers she representsI’ve always seemed older than my age. As a child I was quiet and reserved, but also serious and outspoken. Life wasn’t always pleasant, but you remember the happy bits. We’ve always been a tight-knit, motley crew: Mum, my older brother and me. We found ways to laugh through anything. There often wasn’t much money around. Mum stopped working when I was 12, for health reasons. She shielded me from our struggles with endless resourcefulness. When I was older I understood the sacrifices she made: at times going hungry to make sure I’d eaten. Continue reading...

Buttigieg’s paternity leave is a reminder that the US prioritizes work over family | Arwa Mahdawi
The transportation secretary is ‘at work’ like the heroic workaholic he is – but that undermines the whole point of parental leaveBrace yourself, because what I’m going to say next may shock you. Here we go: an American man adopted newborn twins and then had the audacity to take some time off work to look after them! No, I can’t believe it either. No self-respecting, red-blooded man should be spending time with his tiny babies. He should be in the office, missing those early months, so he can focus on what’s really important. Forget bonding with your vulnerable newborns, there are urgent emails to be sent.Arwa Mahdawi’s new book, Strong Female Lead, is available for pre-order Continue reading...

The Lathums review – all hail Wigan’s conquering heroes
O2 Victoria Warehouse, ManchesterThis one-time wedding band have ditched the floor-filling covers, but their show retains a joyous jukebox feelEverything about the Lathums’ biggest ever live show feels designed to herald a major arrival. Formed at music college in Wigan in 2019, this four-piece band represent the latest round of indie guitar revivalism. Like Stockport’s Blossoms and Llandudno’s Catfish and the Bottlemen before them, they have a No 1 album under their belts (their debut, How Beautiful Life Can Be, nudged Drake off the top spot earlier this month) and an endless supply of love from their home town. The Lathums have seemingly perfected the formula for creating all-out bangers and mass adoration. The sold-out, 3,500 capacity Victoria Warehouse is fizzing – part indie disco, part football match – long before the band walk on stage to the Housemartins’ Caravan of Love. If there’s one thing you need to know about the Lathums, it’s that they started out as a wedding band. Tonight they joyously embody that fact, dressed in sharp suits, with huge glitter balls cascading the audience in gold light at key moments of the show. This is a group who used to time-hop through rock history in hotel function rooms every weekend, and while they’ve ditched the floor-filling covers, the show retains a jukebox feel.
