Ilkay Gündogan: 'A surgeon wanted to put a big screw in my back' | Donald McRae
The Manchester City midfielder on his side’s remarkable winning run, coming back from injuries and how an NBA player ignited his desire to help othersIlkay Gündogan lives alone in Manchester and, during the past strange and solitary year, there have been times when a yearning for other people has left an ache inside him. Apart from one fleeting trip to Turkey in August to visit his family, he has not seen the people he loves most for more than a year. It is even longer since he was able to be with his closest friends in Germany. And so, when he has not been training or travelling to and from games or enjoying the purer pleasure of playing football for Manchester City, Gündogan has often been lonely. At the same time, the 30-year-old midfielder has been in the form of his life, scoring 11 goals in 21 Premier League appearances. Even more notably, City are in the midst of a record-breaking run of 21 successive wins. “It’s great,” Gündogan says of City’s sustained blue streak. “It’s extraordinary, especially with the difficulties this season brings. And it’s maybe unexpected, also for us, because I remember struggling at the beginning of the season.” Continue reading...

Sir Alan Bowness obituary
Accomplished director of the Tate in the 1980s who updated the gallery’s approach and expanded its reachSir Alan Bowness, who has died aged 93, was born to be director of the Tate Gallery. When he was duly appointed in 1980 he spent his eight years bringing the gallery (solely a Millbank institution at that time) into the 20th century. He was well qualified for the job: an accomplished Courtauld-trained art historian and senior academic, he held Arts Council appointments and had become adept at using his elbows at the street corner where government and the art world met.In 1964, with Lawrence Gowing, he had curated the hugely successful exhibition 54:64 Painting and Sculpture of the Decade, at the Tate. Those who saw it, including myself, as a sixth-form art student, remember it to this day as an eye opener for a public still starved of a first-hand view of the work of the international avant garde.
