20 years of the iPod: how it shuffled music and tech forever
In October 2001, the music industry was riven by piracy and had no idea how to solve it. Enter Steve Jobs, whose new device created a digital music market – and made Apple into a titanIn 2001, the record business was in freefall due to digital piracy, and the best way out of this accelerating crisis came in the shape of a white device the size of a deck of cards. The iPod, launched 20 years ago this week, was also how Apple’s Steve Jobs was able to prey on a failing business in order to avenge his own past failures – exiled between 1985 and 1997 from the company he co-founded – by turning Apple into the most profitable company in history. Before the iPod lifeline arrived in October 2001, record labels were in full panic mode. In its annual report for 2001, record company trade body IFPI called it “a turbulent” year, blaming filesharing and CD burning for a revenue slump. Jay Berman was chief exective of IFPI at the time and calls the scale of filesharing then “a crisis of momentous proportions” for record labels. “It really was,” he says, “a foreign invasion.” Continue reading...

‘We don’t need to buy more stuff’: the people who kit out their home for free
Many people turning to skips or sites such as Freecycle in a bid to save money and help the planetOne man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so goes the saying. That is certainly evident through the rise of exchanges on platforms such as Olio, Facebook Marketplace and Nextdoor, where people happily take their neighbours’ unwanted goods off their hands. Sometimes items are new or as good as new; sometimes they are a piece of furniture to upcycle and breathe new life into. From saving money to helping the planet, many people turn to volunteer-run online communities focused on goods that would otherwise go to landfill, rather than head to Ikea. Searches for the term “Freecycle” have increased 22% from July 2018 to July 2021, while the number of people Googling “where can I find free stuff?” shot up 800% over the same period, according to the data provider SEMrush. Some scour skips, the streets, and ask around in their community for free stuff – all ways of consuming without spending a penny. Continue reading...

A unexpected change too: Ashton Agar has been left out, so, Australia go in with an extra seamer? Full teams shortly.Allo, allo. Lovely to be with you for the opener of the T20 World Cup Proper. Don’t for a moment jump to the conclusion that I’m undermining the thrilling cricket played over the last week - quite the opposite. But if the ICC want to include 16 teams, which is absolutely right, they should all be in the main draw rather than running a de facto qualifier before the big boys rock up. Continue reading...

‘We were crazy kids just jumping on everything’: gymnast twins Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova
They were only 16 when they won medals at the Tokyo Olympics. So how are the high-flying sisters balancing stardom and schoolwork?Early on a Friday morning in a large, open gymnasium in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, Jessica and Jennifer Gadirova are standing a few metres apart on a springy blue floor, preparing for takeoff. They have convinced the photographer to shoot them doing handsprings. The hope is that they will coordinate so well, the camera will capture the identical twins in identical poses mid‑air; backs arched like horseshoes, hands about to reach the floor, legs stretched, feet pointed like ballerinas. The countdown begins. On a second-floor viewing platform, a crowd of parents and small children, here for a preschool gymnastics class, watches in anticipation. Three, two, one. The children are transfixed, probably unaware they are watching two Olympic bronze medallists in action. The jumps look coordinated enough to me – but did it work for the camera? Not this time, it turns out. This is the Gadirova twins’ first magazine photoshoot and I can feel their excitement. In addition to acrobatics on the floor, they suggest poses on the beam and bars – all sorts of kicks, handstands and jumps. Their Olympic-level work ethic shines through. “I could get my leg straighter,” Jessica suggests after doing a kick on a beam, and back on it she hops. When it’s time for a solo portrait, the twin not being photographed will take her phone and proudly document the other’s turn in the spotlight. There’s a fierce commitment to equality between them. If the photographer places one twin in front, they’ll ask for another set of pictures, this time switching places. “We’re the twins, but it’s nice to be recognised as individuals,” Jennifer tells me later. Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for chocolate scones and fig jam | The new vegan
A very British teatime treat, made with vegan butter and a quick fig jamThe scone is a generations-old British institution, and it was only a matter of time before I wrote a vegan recipe for it. Traditionally with vegan baking, I have found a way around butter, but now, in 2021, there are excellent vegan butters on our supermarket shelves that excel on every front. In the main, they’re rich and delicious, readily available and they bake well. My favourite is Naturli, because it is made with organic shea and rapeseed without the use of any palm oil, meaning proper scones can continue to be enjoyed for more generations to come.UK readers: click to buy these ingredients from Ocado Continue reading...
