With Boris Johnson in hospital, government is adrift | Simon Jenkins
As we wish the PM a speedy recovery from coronavirus, we must recognise that the machinery of power is malfunctioning Boris Johnson is ill and in hospital. That must be wretched for him and his family. We can only wish him well and a speedy recovery. His infection by Covid-19 indicates the extraordinary contagiousness of this disease and possibly its widespread prevalence. Of the first there is now no doubt. Of the second, without testing, there is no clue. That a prime minister is ill is a serious matter. Yesterday the Queen performed her duty as the nation’s figurehead with remarkable assurance. In clear, undramatic language, she spoke free of cliche and with sincerity. Her few words of hope shone through the darkening forest of the media coverage of these events. It was the first time I smiled at the television in a month. Continue reading...

French writers' coronavirus getaways prompt backlash
Accounts of bucolic isolation by Leïla Slimani and Marie Darrieussecq prompt charges of elitism and comparisons to Marie Antoinette Leïla Slimani and Marie Darrieussecq may be two of France’s most acclaimed writers – but their accounts of life in lockdown in their second homes in the countryside have unleashed an outpouring of resentment among French readers, with one fellow writer even comparing Slimani to Marie Antoinette.Slimani, who won the Prix Goncourt for her bestselling novel Lullaby, wrote in Le Monde of how she had left Paris and sequestered herself and her children in their countryside second home since 13 March, telling them that it was “a bit like Sleeping Beauty”. “Tonight, I couldn’t sleep,” she wrote. “Through my bedroom window, I watched dawn break over the hills. The icy grass, the lime trees on the branches of which the first buds appear.” Continue reading...

Poem of the week: Easter by Róisín Kelly
A chance sighting of an ex-lover sets off very ambivalent emotions, but also a kind of miracleEasterYou walk by holding a bunch of flowersnever knowing that you’ve just performed a miracle. Are those flowers for your girl?I imagine her dressed up like an Easter eggin yellow and pink. I’d tap at you like an egg, cracking your thin chocolate shell. If I were made of chocolate too, I’d breakoff parts of myself to give to you and your girl.Once, I gave my words for gardenand water and moonlit and loveto a man who kissed me. After he rolleda stone over my heart and shut me offfrom the world, I had no words leftto describe the dark dream that followed. Now you’ve walked by, godlike in jeansand an old t-shirt, the sun glinting on onesilver earring. Now a rose is once againnot only rose but also soft and redand thorn and bee and honey. Now a bird is singing song and treeand nest in a high place and blue speckled egg.You yourself are glowing with words, they moveup and down you as if they’re alive. The words bring themselves to meand tell my tongue sweetness over and over. The words are everything. With them,I’ll turn water to wine at your wedding. Continue reading...

'There will be a huge financial hit': cricket clubs count cost of lockdown
The coronavirus pandemic has left England’s 7,000 amateur cricket clubs facing a very anxious summerBy Richard Edwards for The Pinch HitterSport is hardly a priority amid an unprecedented global crisis, but, while cricket grounds soak up some welcome spring sunshine in perfect isolation, there are ugly storm clouds circling. This is usually one of the busiest times of the year at club grounds up and down the country, as armies of volunteers and groundstaff prepare the outfield and wickets for the summer ahead. This spring, though, has a very different feel. Excitement has been replaced by anxiety. Enthusiasm for the season ahead has been tempered with a realisation that, in the coming months, a great many clubs could face a grim fight to simply keep their heads above water. Continue reading...

Coronavirus Death Toll in England, Wales and Scotland Rises By 432 To 5,366
Get the latest on coronavirus. Sign up to the Daily Brief for news, explainers, how-tos, opinion and more.A further 432 deaths from coronavirus have been recorded in England, Scotland and Wales over 24 hours, public health chiefs have confirmed. The increase consists of 403 in England, two in Scotland and 27 in Wales. Northern Ireland has yet to report its most recent figures.UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care are yet to be published, so the data are taken from each nation’s individual reporting. It brings the total for the three countries, minus Northern Ireland, to 5,366.However, the government tally has never accurately matched the individual totals reported by the four nations.Last week, the Office for National statistics revealed the virus had accounted for 1% of all deaths in England and Wales in the week ending March 20 – 103 cases in total. The up to date figure is likely to be substantially higher with the Covid-19 death rate now several times that number. Those figures, unlike the daily data from the Department of Health and Social Care, included people dying outside of hospitals whose death certificates mentioned Covid-19, including in combination with other health conditions. The DHSC only records people dying in hospital after being diagnosed with coronavirus. This is a breaking news story and will be updated. Strictly Come Dancing's Shirley Ballas Offers Assurances Over New Series Amid Coronavirus Outbreak
Shirley Ballas has insisted Strictly Come Dancing bosses will do “everything in their power” to get the show back on our screens in September. In recent times, there have been question marks over this year’s series of the BBC ballroom competition amid the coronavirus pandemic.Tabloid reports have claimed the show was “under serious threat” due to the outbreak, with no celebrities reported to have yet signed up for the series. However, while the TV industry has been massively impacted by the virus – while shows like EastEnders and Coronation Street suspending production – Strictly’s head judge is hopeful the show will return as usual in the autumn. Speaking on Monday’s This Morning via video link, Shirley told hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield: “I spoke to Sarah, the executive producer, throughout the week, and of course you definitely don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow, but I know they will definitely do everything in their power, if it’s conceivably possible, they will get that show on the air by September.“So, it’s fingers crossed, let’s see how we go day to day. But I know they understand it’s an important show for the nation, and I think people will ready for that come the winter months.“If everyone self-isolates and we all do what we’re supposed to do then there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be up and running by the end of the year.”Shirley also praised departing pro dancers Kevin Clifton and AJ Pritchard, who have both announced they will not return for the next series. “They’ve been a great part of the show. We love them, we wish them well, they’ve chosen to go onto other things, but the show will continue,” she said.“I know they’ve got people to replace, so let’s just watch this space.”Professional dancer Anton Du Beke recently said he hopes the show will be able to air as normal. Appearing on Channel 4′s The Steph Show last week, he said: “I should think the pre-production of it should be going ahead as normal.“It’s when we get into the studio - the pros get into the studio in August ... so hopefully we will be out of it [lockdown] by then, so hopefully we can get back into the studio.”This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV. Make the most of your time in lockdown with a daily dose of celebrity news and guides to the best shows. Sign up to the entertainment newsletter.READ MORE: A Running List Of The Films, TV Shows, Festivals And Events Hit By Coronavirus Lockdown Has Let Us Into The Homes Of The Rich And Famous – Here's How We're Rating Their Interiors 10 Classic Reality Shows We Need Back On Our Screens To Lift The Nation's Spirits
