UK Covid live news: minister defends pupil isolation after rapid test results as schools return in England
Latest updates: Vicky Ford, children’s minister, says chances of lateral flow tests giving false positives are ‘very low’England’s school catch-up scheme ‘chaotic and confusing’, say headteachers Coronavirus – latest updatesSee all our coronavirus coverage 9.33am GMT 9.19am GMT Good morning. Schools in England are reopening fully from today, and secondary school pupils will be asked to take regular lateral flow tests (the ones that give rapid results). But there is controversy over a plan to require pupils who test positive to self-isolate, even if they subsequently test negative with a PCR test. PCR tests, which take longer to produce results because they are processed in a laboratory, are more accurate. As the official NHS England advice makes clear, other people who test positive with a lateral flow test administered at home can get released from self-isolation if they test negative with a PCR test.In interviews this morning Vicky Ford, the children’s minister, defended the plan for schools. She told the Today programme:The first priority is to make sure that we keep the Covid out of the classrooms with these regular tests. The chances of the lateral flow test giving a false positive are actually very low ...The really important thing here is to make sure that we can keep schools open and minimise the risk of having Covid in the classrooms, and that is why if people have had the test that shows that they have got Covid through the lateral flow test, we should not take the risk of having that child in the classroom. We’ve looked very carefully at the evidence that’s emerging from the tests that have been delivered at home and in the testing sites over the last eight weeks, and the actual validation of those tests in real life scenarios suggests that it’s 99.9 per cent, at least, specific, which means that the risk of false positives is extremely low, less than one in a thousand. Trisha Goddard Shuts Down Piers Morgan During Discussion About Racism Towards Meghan Markle
Trisha Goddard did a fine job of reminding Piers Morgan why he’s not quite qualified to pass comment on what does and doesn’t constitute racism during Monday’s edition of Good Morning Britain.Following Meghan Markle’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, Piers had a lot to say on Monday morning, particularly in light of the Duchess of Sussex’s claims about racism within the Royal Family.During the interview, Meghan told Oprah that an undisclosed member of the Royal Family had raised racist concerns to Prince Harry about their son, Archie.““[They had] concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he was born… and what that would mean or look like,” Meghan said.Over the course of Monday’s GMB, Piers repeatedly cast doubt on these claims, and accused the Duchess of “trying to portray the Royal Family as a bunch of racists” and “making out the entire family are a bunch of white supremacists”.Fortunately, Trisha was on hand to point something important out about Piers’ comments.During a video-link interview, Piers said: “We don’t know who [that] conversation was with, or the context. But what you’re saying is that any context in which that kind of conversation happened is automatically racist?”Trisha responded: “What gets me is why is everybody else such an expert about racism against Black people?“I’m sorry, Piers, you don’t get to call out what is and isn’t racism against Black people.”She continued: “You can call out all the other stuff, I’ll leave you to call out all the other stuff you want. But leave the racism stuff to us, eh?”.@TrishaGoddard says @piersmorgan can call out whatever he wants but he doesn’t get to say what ‘is and isn’t racism against black people.'He responds he's calling out Meghan's 'incendiary charge of racism against the Royal Family'.Watch GMB
