Talking Horses: how Remorex won the Palio di Siena without his jockey
Remorex, a descendant of British racehorses, prevailed in the Palio di Siena on Friday, even though his rider fell off at halfwayFor reasons of equine welfare, I imagine that many of you will share my reservations about the Palio di Siena, the medieval race which is still held twice a year around that city’s main square. But I bring Friday’s race to your attention because of one extraordinary aspect, that it was won by a loose horse.Remorex is the horse in question, ridden for the first half of the race by Giovanni Atzeni, a cousin to Andrea, who we know well. Alas, they parted when ambitiously trying to take the edge off one of the corners. In fairness to Atzeni, no saddles are used in the Palio. Frankly, it’s a miracle that some of the jockeys stay aboard throughout. Continue reading...

Take the kids to … Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh
Children will be spellbound at this temple of storytelling, which also puts on plays and spoken-word performances (for all ages)‘A story should be told eye to eye, mind to mind, heart to heart.” So runs the Scottish travellers’ proverb that inspires this cultural centre dedicated to the telling of tales and the sharing of stories. The main draw is its programme of spoken-word performances, most of which take place in its 100-seat basement theatre. The storytelling doesn’t just happen on stage, though. The ground floor has a large, airy room used for exhibitions, workshops and open-mic events, as well as a monthly story session for tots (Tiny Tales for one- to three-year-olds). Pre-show, my kids had a fun 20-minutes opening lots of wee doors and peering through lots of wee windows that form part of the room’s interactive story wall. Continue reading...

It'll Be Alt-Right on the Night review – fun with friends from the far-right
Pleasance Courtyard, EdinburghMatthew Greenhough’s buzzy one-man show clashes comedy, factionalism and jazz trumpet into a plea for tolerance between the echo chambersAre we “trapped in separate echo chambers” and can the divides be bridged? Matthew Greenhough’s (almost) new solo show for Wound Up Theatre asks that question through the tale of two working-class Sheffield school friends growing up and apart. Greeny (a name that hints at autobiography) migrates to London and works in the media. Stevo stays home, marooned in the cognitive dissonance between his dead-end life and the phrase “white privilege”, prey to Tommy Robinson’s opinions about the world.Greenhough hops back and forth through time as he narrates their stories, from the occasion they nicked a Dead Kennedys LP from the record shop, to their punk tour of Europe, to the day that – now drifting apart – Stevo visits Greeny in London for reasons he has cause to conceal. Greenhough’s script is full of blunt, bathetic northern comedy, and he performs it as if he’s plugged into the mains. Steven Wright on trumpet punctuates with punk tracks given a jazz makeover. Continue reading...
