Covid Deaths: UK Sees Record Increase Of 1,820 Reported Fatalities
The UK has recorded a pandemic-high of 1,820 more Covid-related deaths since Tuesday. It brings the total number of fatalities to 93,290 since the pandemic began. That refers to people who have died within 28 days of first testing positive for coronavirus.Wednesday’s increase breaks a record that was just 24 hours old: Tuesday saw 1,610 deaths, then the highest number to date, reported. But as with all daily deaths updates, it doesn’t mean all these victims have actually died within the last 24 hours – just that they have been newly reported. The true deadliest days of the pandemic only emerge later, as deaths can take days and even months to report after occurring. This is a breaking news story and will be updated. Madrid Explosion: At Least Two Dead In City Centre Blast
At least two people died and eight more were injured when a building in central Madrid was blown apart in an explosion on Wednesday. One of the injured was in serious condition and transferred to hospital. The building belonged to the Catholic Church and an official said one volunteer was missing.Initial investigations suggested that the blast in Calle Toledo, a street leading out from the city centre, had been caused by a gas leak, mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said.Smoke billowed out of the partly collapsed building and rescue workers evacuated elderly people from a nearby nursing home. The top five floors were totally destroyed, with walls blown out, while the bottom two floors were still mostly intact, but charred in places from the flames. The building was a complex that provided residential training for priests and also gave meals to homeless people, a neighbour said.La Salle La Paloma School confirmed to El HuffPost that all the students at the school next door to the blast site were safe and that none of them had been outside when the explosion occurred, minutes before 3pm.“We were at home, the windows were moved and we heard a huge explosion, we live 200 meters from the building that has collapsed, and everyone has started to go out onto the terraces and balconies,” said one of the parents whose daughter is a student at the school.“My wife started to cry as soon as she heard the news and I ran away. I still have the anguish inside. “At school they told us that the children had not gone in the playground today, which is covered with rubble, because of the snow and the rain. That has saved them”, he added.Related... Quo Vadis, Aida? review – shattering return to Srebrenica
Through the eyes of a translator moving between the different ethnic factions, director Jasmila Žbanić musters real tragic power and clear-eyed compassion revisiting the massacre 25 years on There’s a real tragic power in this almost unbearably brutal and shocking movie from writer-director Jasmila Žbanić about the Srebrenica massacre in 1995 during the Bosnian war, in which more than 8,000 unarmed Bosnian Muslims sheltering in a so-called UN “safe area” were slaughtered: the biggest civilian atrocity in Europe since the second world war. Dutch UN peacekeeping soldiers in powder-blue helmets had been unable to stop Bosnian Serb forces swaggering into their compound – undisciplined, jacked up with the brutal thrill of conquest, paranoid about combatants supposedly hiding among the civilian refugees and simply seething with ethnic hate.Jasna Đuričić plays Aida, a schoolteacher-turned-translator who is employed by the UN to interpret in discussions between Bosnian Muslim leaders and UN officials, as Srebrenica falls to the Serb forces. Her husband Nihad (Izudin Bajrović) is a headteacher, and they sense that their military-age sons Hamdija (Boris Ler) and Sejo (Dino Bajrović) are now in great danger of reprisals from the victorious Serb army. As they huddle in the disused battery factory under the UN’s supposed protection with thousands of other terrified souls, and thousands more outside, with chaos, squalor and panic growing, Aida scurries around frantically trying to get information. She realises that the pathetic UN commander Karremans (Johan Heldenbergh) can do nothing in the face of the murderous bullies led by the notorious war criminal Ratko Mladić, played with horribly plausible conceit and disdain by Boris Isaković, smoothly and ambiguously announcing his determination not to hurt “innocent” people and handing out Toblerone bars to the trembling children.
