Mohamed Salah turns on the style as lethal Liverpool see off Arsenal
In the context of Arsenal’s lamentable record in this stadium this was actually an improved performance, whatever the scoreline might suggest. They were worn down in the end by a Liverpool side that started ponderously but eventually found their rhythm and confidence, with Mohamed Salah enjoying one of his most effective games for a while, though until David Luiz went into malfunction mode in the second half there was little to choose between the two teams at the top of the Premier League table. If Liverpool are now the only side with a 100% record, Arsenal did enough to suggest that once their new signings settle in they should be a force again this season. It is debatable whether a couple of expensive errors by David Luiz can be filed under “settling in”, for this was a display to justify all the doubts raised by those who questioned whether the notoriously fragile Gunners defence really needs such a loose cannon at its heart. While it would be harsh to state that David Luiz cost Arsenal this game, he certainly blighted their chances of making a comeback. Continue reading...

Joe Root digs in to give England glimmer of hope in third Ashes Test
• Australia 179 & 246, England 67 & 155-3• England captain unbeaten but Denly departs for 50We are still here. When England were 15 for two in their seventh over with another 344 runs required for victory and 70 overs to be bowled in the day, swift exit possibilities were being explored. Now other possibilities, more unlikely but much more intriguing, have surfaced. In their pursuit of 359 for victory England were 156 for three at the close with Joe Root on home turf attempting to play the innings of his life. At stumps he was unbeaten on 75, which already constitutes his innings of the series.Nagging away at the back of the mind is the thought, “This is Headingley”. Extraordinary things happen here in the fourth innings, which have involved a wide variety of protagonists: Donald Bradman, Bob Willis, Mark Butcher and Shai Hope spring to mind. On Saturday afternoon England looked to their ordinary Joes to join this list. At least Messrs Root and Denly, to borrow some Strine, have been “pretty bloody ordinary” up until now. Age shall not weary Dorothy Byrne’s wisdom... or her sharp tongue | Vanessa Thorpe
Her MacTaggart lecture told some timely home truths about the mediaSoulful laments for the passing of a golden age of broadcasting freedom, for a time when news editors and documentary-makers were kings, are fairly standard at the Edinburgh television festival. Back then, the newsrooms were full of smoke and dynamism.
