National Insurance Rise Will Go Ahead In April 'No Ifs, No Buts', Number 10 Confirms
The planned hike in national insurance will go ahead in April, Downing Street has confirmed, despite mounting opposition from Conservative MPs.A Number 10 spokesman said Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak were “fully committed” to the rise.Previously, the PM had stopped short of guaranteeing that the 1.25 percentage point increase would go ahead as planned. It comes despite a report in The Times that Johnson was considering “back-sliding” on the tax rise in an attempt to placate his unhappy backbenchers. At a Downing Street briefing for political journalists, a spokesman said: “The Prime Minister and Chancellor are fully committed to introducing the health and social care levy in April.“This is something we have legislated for and we have been clear on the rationale for it.”He said the money raised would be used to clear the NHS backlog caused by the pandemic, and fund a new social care settlement.Asked if it was a “no ifs, no buts” commitment, the spokesman said yes.On the BBC’s Question Time on Thursday defence minister James Heappey said the government was “in listening mode” amid mounting public concern at the imminent tax hike.He said: “There are plenty of people that are on good salaries that are starting to worry about how they’re going to make ends meet and the government is seeking to address that.“We’re going to need to do a lot over the next few years to help people with this.”But the PM’s spokesman said: “We understand that people may not want to pay more in tax, but we’ve set out the rationale for this. It’s clear that the public’s number one priority is to support the NHS.”Related...National Insurance Tax Rise 'Going Ahead' In April, Says MinisterBoris Johnson Casts Doubt Over NI Hike Despite No10 Insisting It Will Go AheadBoris Johnson Accused Of Leading 'Zombie Government' Distracted By Partygate Row

Alan Carr's Ex-Husband Paul Drayton Freed From Prison After Appealing Drink-Driving Sentence
Alan Carr’s ex-husband Paul Drayton has been freed from prison after winning an appeal against his drink-driving sentence. The 50-year-old was jailed on Wednesday after pleading guilty to a single count of “driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit”, having reversed a 4×4 into a police car while four times over the limit. However, Drayton was released after two “harrowing” nights in custody, with a judge telling him on Friday that he should be given the opportunity to turn his life around.Drayton broke down in tears in the dock as he was told he was being released, the PA news agency reported. John Dye, representing Drayton, told the court that while he believed the offence “crosses the custody threshold” his two nights in custody had been “extremely difficult for someone who has poor mental health”. After deliberating the case, Judge Shani Barnes returned to the courtroom and told Drayton that he had led an “exemplary life”.“Of course it is right that we give you an opportunity to make amends and turn your life around,” she said. She told him he would now receive a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for 24 months.Drayton’s original sentencing came just five days after he and comedian Alan announced they planned to divorce after three years of marriage and 13 years as a couple. In a statement, a representative said: “They have jointly and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways.”The former couple tied the knot in 2018, in a ceremony planned and officiated by their mutual friend Adele.READ MORE:Alan Carr's Estranged Husband Paul Drayton Jailed For Drink-DrivingAlan Carr And Husband Paul Drayton Announce Split
