Win or lose, Labour must continue to fight for change | Christine Berry
Yes, this election is historic – but as Margaret Thatcher realised, transforming the country requires years of struggle“It’s now or never.” “We all need to step up.” “Elections like this come around once in a generation.” If you’re a Labour supporter, you’ll likely have been bombarded with messages like this on your social media feeds since the campaign started. And, in one sense, they’re true. Never in my lifetime has the choice between the two major parties been so stark. Never has so much been at stake. And never has history seemed so radically open-ended, the opportunity to make a difference during an election campaign so clear. But there’s one important sense in which these messages are wrong, and it’s this: our fight doesn’t end today. In fact, whatever the result, it will only just have begun. As Joe Guinan and I argue in our book People Get Ready!, vested interests in the City of London and the fossil fuel industry will not simply take it lying down if Labour forms the next government. The relentless media attacks will only escalate. And after decades of neoliberalism, the civil service is simply not programmed to deliver the kind of policies Labour is advocating. Every Michael Bay film – ranked!
Will the director’s latest effort, 6 Underground, a vigilante revenge thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, match the bombastic grandeur of the rest of his oeuvre? And which Transformers film was the least bad, anyway? You can tell that this was Michael Bay’s final Transformers film. It’s basically a compilation of every bad idea the man has ever had. There’s King Arthur. Stanley Tucci is Merlin. There’s a sexy Oxford professor called Viviane Wembley. It’s heavily implied that planet Earth was a great big Transformer all along. Everyone hated this film, even the idiots who went to see the other four. Continue reading...

Squirrel review – this small wonder is full of surprises
The Egg, BathTim Bell and Kate Cross’s remarkable production mixes Bauhaus-style designs and jazz in an irresistible treat for under-fivesGlitter, sequins and fake snow are the stock ingredients for a Christmas kids’ show. But in the attic studio of the Egg theatre lies just a handful of large geometric blocks. Is this really the set for a wintry tale of a hungry squirrel? And we’d expect some rousing singalong songs at this time of year. But it’s the understated syncopation of jazz that we hear. And who is our host for the next half hour? It’s Caroline Garland, whose culottes, beret and stripy tee make her look like an escapee from a sun-kissed 1950s caper on the Riviera. This is an unusually cool, even chic children’s production, but it’s also supremely welcoming and warm-hearted, with an understanding of its under-five audiences that is as sophisticated as its cultural references. Yes, the set looks like we’ve found ourselves inside a Bauhaus model but the kids are soon making slides out of the shapes and picking up tubes that resemble finished rolls of wrapping paper.
