Atlético Madrid v Real Madrid: La Liga – live!
Minute-by-minute report of the Madrid derbyJonathan Wilson: Messi and Ronaldo are weighing their clubs downSid Lowe: Trippier returns with everything riding on the derbyEmail rob.smyth@theguardian.com with any thoughts 2.10pm GMT Kieran Trippier, who is available again after his ban, goes straight back into the Atletico Madrid. And Karim Benzema, who has been out for almost a month, starts up front for Real Madrid.Atletico Madrid (4-4-2) Oblak; Trippier, Savic, Felipe, Hermoso; Carrasco, Koke, Llorente, Lemar; Suarez, Correa.Substitutes: Joao Felix, Saul, Vitolo, Grbic, Vrsaljko, Kondogbia, Torreira, Dembele, Lodi. 1.48pm GMT Hello. There’s no such as a meaningless Madrid derby. But this is more meaningful than most, a match that could have a huge impact on the psychology of the title race. Atletico are top, five points ahead of the champions Real with a game in hand. Between them are Barcelona, who are two points behind Atleti having played two games more. Atletico are still favourites for the title but they’ve had a tricky recent spell, winning only two of the last five games. This is a mustn’t-lose game for them. It’s closer to a must-win for Real, although they wouldn’t look a gift point in the mouth. Sam Allardyce left frustrated as West Brom are held by Newcastle
At the end of a bruising week for Steve Bruce, it was imperative Newcastle found a way to stem the bleeding. For Bruce, who spent the last few days attempting to extinguish the flames from a leaked training-ground spat with Matt Ritchie, avoiding defeat may have been adequate but a goalless draw extended a sorry run to two wins from their past 18 matches in all competitions. For West Brom, who remain ensconced in the bottom three and eight points adrift of the last safe spot, this represented an opportunity missed.Bruce made three changes from last weekend’s draw at home to Wolves, with Ryan Fraser and Jeff Hendrick replacing the injured Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almirón, while Paul Dummett was preferred to Jamal Lewis at left-back, the manager citing his experience a valuable commodity in a game of this magnitude. Martin Dubravka continued in goal and Joelinton led the line although often peeled wide to allow Joe Willock to roam into space centrally. Continue reading...

Homeworking sounds good – until your job takes over your life | John Harris
Some may want an escape from the office grind, but remote working could eat into downtime and increase inequalityThe supposedly looming return to normality – whatever that is – may have almost squashed the hopes of a more equal, mutual-aiding, communitarian country that briefly flared to life during the first lockdown. But for those lucky enough to have a job that can just about be done without leaving the house, perhaps one alleged source of optimism still burns bright.Big companies seem more open than ever to the idea of homeworking arrangements staying in place even after the worst of the pandemic is over and restrictions are lifted, and for some people the old grind of commuting and congregating in offices may at least partially be over. What this could mean for the smaller businesses that depend on the presence of large employers is clear from our emptied-out city centres, but “hybrid working” is the season’s most fashionable corporate concept, often talked up in the same la-di-da tones as all those lockdown-based articles about Zoom fatigue and the trials of baking bread. Fat-shamers have felt enabled by Covid, and it's hard to fight back
I cannot stand the toxic atmosphere of glee around the link between coronavirus and obesityIt is not news that there is a connection between Covid mortality rates and a country’s obesity level. It may have been confirmed for the first time last week by the World Obesity Forum, but this has been a word-of-mouth truism since the start. Someone always knew a man whose brother-in-law worked in intensive care and said only obese people suffered seriously. “I weigh myself every morning, to check that I am still just overweight,” said a friend with one of these brothers-in-law. Then Boris Johnson set this in stone, whining to his cabinet: “It’s all right for you thinnies.” It is not a word, is it, “thinnie”? Nor is “gloomster”. Sometimes, I think that is the summit of the prime minister’s arrogance – that he finds the English language incomplete without the interjection of his baby words. At other times, I think his arrogance is more like the mountain in a Japanese etching: there is no “top”, there is only “more” and “cloud”. Continue reading...
