'I didn't feel I fitted in': why Gypsies, Roma and Travellers don't go to university
A new tutoring project is ensuring students from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller backgrounds don’t drift away from education during the pandemicOne day at school, Jack* was accosted by his teacher while he was putting his coat on and getting ready to leave the classroom. “Leave it there,” she insisted in front of his classmates. “We donated you that. Your mum didn’t have enough money to buy you a coat.” When he argued back – his mum, a successful public sector employee, had bought the coat for him before term – he was given detention for a week. The same teacher referred him for an ADHD diagnosis without telling his parents. Sarah*, his mother, has worked in educational special needs, and questioned the teacher’s decision. She learned the diagnosis stemmed from a high score on a maths test, which had been deemed suspicious “considering his background”. Continue reading...

Tree of the week: ‘This black pine represents how nature forces change on to living things’
This tree in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, cultivated according to the traditional practice of niwaki, inspired Rod Hardingham so much he has tried to grow a similar one in his B&B in KentRod Hardingham’s favourite tree, a black pine in Tatsuno, embodies not only his love of gardens and nature, but also a decades-long affinity with Japan and Japanese culture. “My wife, Etsuko, is Japanese,” says Hardingham, 69. “She was working for an American company in Tokyo, but her English was awful, so they sent her to the UK to improve.” Hardingham’s brother Stephen was her English teacher. He made the introduction and, before long, Rod and Etsuko were married. It was on Hardingham’s first trip to meet Etsuko’s parents that he visited Tatsuno, in Hyōgo Prefecture, and saw the sloping black pine. “My wife’s family live in a town called Himeji in the west of Japan. Her sister suggested we drive about 20 minutes over to Tatsuno because it still has a large number of samurai houses and other architectural remnants.” Continue reading...

Currys failed to give voucher for faulty laptop as promised
My wife and I are classed as vulnerable and we need a computer to order food deliveriesIn mid-September I went to Currys to find out when I would get my computer back (bought in 2012) following a repair. I was told it had been written off but, as I had paid monthly for a Team Knowhow support agreement, I would receive a voucher towards the cost of a replacement.Hearing nothing, I returned to the store only to be told it could take up to two weeks to materialise. At the end of the month I received a text from Team Knowhow seeking feedback on “my recent product replacement” which suggested the matter was closed. Continue reading...

There’ll be no Christmas cheer for pubs stuck in tier 3
A community-focused Ramsbottom pub that trains marginalised young people slams the ‘inept system’ that is forcing tens of thousands of hospitality venues to remain closed In a normal year in the run-up to Christmas, Glen Duckett, landlord of the award-winning Eagle + Child in Ramsbottom, would be accompanying five or six of his staff on a trip to Angoulême in France, an annual culinary excursion he introduced as part of an apprenticeship scheme. Back at the pub, the team would be gearing up for festive gatherings, designing special menus, preparing turkeys and digging the Christmas decorations out of the cellar. But this year is anything but normal. The Eagle will still twinkle with fairy lights, but it won’t be open this Christmas. When lockdown in England ends on 2 December, the pub, near Bury in Greater Manchester, will return to tier 3, only this time the restrictions will be more severe. Continue reading...

Scandal’s Kerry Washington: ‘My mother’s nightmare was for me to be a starving actress’
She hit the big time playing the high-powered political fixer Olivia Pope. In real life, she has spent years campaigning for Kamala Harris and her fellow Democrats. So what’s someone who lives and breathes politics doing in Ryan Murphy’s musical The Prom?In a rational world, somewhere deep in the Democratic National Committee headquarters, a small staff would be hard at work planning Kerry Washington’s presidential bid. “Washington 2028: Tough on Scandal” or “2032: Ms Kerry Goes to Washington” – the slogans just write themselves. Whether Washington could be persuaded to run for office is another matter. She is, she insists when we meet via a video call, too self-effacing for politics. “I feel you really have to decide that you’re the one, like: ‘I’m the one to solve this problem!’”She is much more comfortable directing attention elsewhere. “For most of my career, I was really a character actor,” she says. “People didn’t connect that the girl from Ray was the same girl from Last King of Scotland, was the same girl from Save the Last Dance. And I loved that, because I got to disappear into these other people and it wasn’t about me.” Continue reading...

Where the headlines are made: inside newsrooms around the world - in pictures
Noel Bowler photographed some of the largest newsrooms across the world, exploring the physical spaces that house our modern press. With declining readership, reduced advertising and persistent questions about ‘truth’ and relevance of newspapers in the 21st century, the structures of print media are in a state of flux. This is a glimpse into the places that are separated by geography, culture and politics, yet linked by the commitment to informing an ever-more distracted publicSupport book project Above the Fold on Kickstarter Continue reading...

The Conservatives are hollowing the state and consolidating power: democracy is at stake | Andrew Fisher
While Michael Gove quotes Marxist theorists, his party is undermining the liberal principles of truth, fairness and accountabilityEarlier this year Michael Gove surprised people by quoting the Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci in a speech (the second time he has done so), but readers of political theory may recognise that the Tories’ strategy owes more to another student of Gramsci: the German communist activist Rudi Dutschke. He coined the term “the long march through the institutions” to describe the strategy of gaining a dominant position in each of the major institutions in society, in Gramscian terms, to gain hegemony. The Tories started their long march in the 1980s by ripping through Britain’s socialist institutions: trade unions were shackled, publicly owned enterprise was privatised and council housing was sold off. The results were clear: a few people got very rich, poverty rose and inequality widened. No subsequent government reversed these changes, instead bolstering them. As Tony Blair said of Thatcher: “I always thought my job was to build on some of the things she had done rather than reverse them.” Today, a generation of young people are less likely to own their own home and earn less than their parents’ generation, while paying exorbitant rents to parasitic landlords. Continue reading...
