Meet the Labour lioness: How ‘Grangela’ is battling for stardom
Angela Rayner is by far the most intriguing figure on the Labour front bench — in every sense of the word. Her nickname, “Grangela” reflects her status as a youthful grandmother. It is also fast becoming a reflection of her grand plan to supersede a flailing Keir Starmer as the star of the thinly-illuminated Labour firmament. Hungry enough to earn a tease in the Commons from Boris Johnson as the Labour lioness, “the prize hunter of the pack”, she looked flattered.

Love Bites review – gleeful salute to theatre’s thrilling return
York Theatre RoyalA mix of music, dance, comedy and poetry delivers a bittersweet reminder of what lockdown deprived us of – and a joyous celebration of live performanceOn the screen at the back of the stage, familiar images flicker: the river, streets in the city centre, the allotments. York Theatre Royal’s reopening event is a resolutely local affair, grounded in the city to which its audience – myself included – has largely been confined since March last year. A mixture of theatre, music, comedy, dance and poetry, peppered with references to local places, it’s a catalogue of York’s creativity.Consisting of 22 short performances, Love Bites was originally conceived for a scrapped Valentine’s Day reopening. But it works just as well as a tribute to the loves that have sustained us through lockdown. The acts represent many kinds: romantic love, parental love, friendship, self-love, love of place, love of language. Maurice Crichton delivers a heartfelt love letter to the theatre itself, while Bridget Foreman’s 5 Minute Call is an ode to us, the audience, and the experiences we have together in this space. These are two of the evening’s most moving performances, offering a bittersweet reminder of what we’ve missed while theatres have been dark. Continue reading...

Craig Charles: ‘I haven’t grown up much since I was five’
The Red Dwarf star and BBC Radio 6 Music presenter on his love of zany kids’ show The Banana Splits – and why he never dreamed he would work in TVGrowing up, me and my brothers would only really get to watch television on Saturday mornings. Our parents would be asleep after having worked late the night before, so we would have a few hours to ourselves as long as we kept quiet and didn’t wake them up. When they did get up, we would have to do our chores, and, during the week, as soon as the Coronation Street theme tune came on we’d be sent to bed, where we read our comics instead. We got a black-and-white TV when I was six or seven and there was one show on Saturday mornings that I loved: The Banana Splits. I would just get lost in it – there were loads of different segments including a rock band dressed up as animals and then they would show cartoons like Arabian Nights, The Three Musketeers and one called Micro Ventures where they shrank this family into the size of ants so they would experience life from that point of view. Londoner’s Diary: Royalist Dominic Raab redirects portrait to his office wall
Welcome back to the Londoner’s Diary. Later today Bimini Bon Boulash tells us she thinks she could convince Sadiq Khan to go vegan after the pair brunched together and church leaders in Soho despair at the “awful” lack of singing in congregations.
