Christine Lagarde in spotlight at first ECB meeting – business live
Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial newsLagarde chairs first ECB governing council todayExpected to outline new vision for eurozone central bank 8.04am GMT Good morning, and welcome to our rolling coverage of the world economy, the financial markets, the eurozone and business. The challenges that warrant the ECB’s current policy stance have not disappeared . The euro area economy faces some near-term risks, mainly related to external factors, and inflation remains persistently below the ECB’s objective.I therefore agree with the view of the Governing Council that a highly accommodative policy stance is warranted for a prolonged period of time in order to bring inflation back to “below but close to 2%”.In my experience as Finance Minister, I have witnessed the difficulties in coordinating fiscal policies, which are inherently focused on national issues and not the euro area perspective. That is why I am convinced that we need both effective and simplified rules and a meaningful euro area fiscal instrument as a complement. In other words, we need to further institutionalise cooperation rather than trust it will emerge in crisis times. Australia v New Zealand: first Test, day one – live!
Updates from the opening day of play at Optus StadiumAny updates? Email or tweet @GeoffLemonSport 8.05am GMT 33rd over: Australia 91-2 (Labuschagne 26, Smith 4) Ferguson bowls, and Smith chases again! Beautiful bowling from Ferguson, back of a length and swinging before seaming away. Smith is shaping to defend off the back foot, then is drawn by the movement into pushing at that ball. It moves too much to take the edge though. That’s uncharacteristic of Smith to follow the ball. He got out that way twice to Morne Morkel in Cape Town while his world was falling apart. The extra bounce did for him, I suspect. Then a brilliant bit of fielding from Raval saves four at midwicket as Smith flicks away, and nearly runs him out as well with a quick throw back at the striker’s end. A maiden for Ferguson. 8.01am GMT 32nd over: Australia 91-2 (Labuschagne 26, Smith 4) Steve Smith is really moving across his stumps now, defending with both feet well outside off by the time he steps around. At one stage though he can’t help chasing the wide one, reaching well outside the line of his body and lacing the ball, but straight to cover. Continue reading...

The Kingmaker review – exquisitely horrible portrait of Imelda Marcos
The former first lady of the Philippines is revealed as a monstrous, loathsome, absurdly queenly figure in Lauren Greenfield’s superb documentaryLauren Greenfield’s film about the Philippines’ former first lady Imelda Marcos reveals a grotesquely self-pitying, wholly unrepentant and very rich woman, who has clearly still kept her hands on a great deal of the American aid money that successive US presidents once gave the Philippines in return for suppressing communism and civil rights and showing hospitality to US naval power – cash that she and her husband, Ferdinand, looted from the public purse and salted away abroad. Related: 'She's an unreliable narrator': Lauren Greenfield on her Imelda Marcos documentary Continue reading...

The Notre Dame fire prompted an orgy of wallet-waving. Is the cathedral now rising from the ashes?
The wealthy pledged millions of euros and architects rushed out unexpected plans to rebuild the Parisian cathedral spire. But setbacks and disagreements have left its outcome in doubtBarely had the dust settled on Notre Dame Cathedral, after the horrifying fire in April, than the world’s architects started cranking out visions of how the famous spire could be rebuilt.Norman Foster was one of the first out of the gates, proposing to build a “light and airy” vaulted glass roof, topped with a crystal spire and an observation deck. It should, he said, be “a work of art about light … contemporary and very spiritual, and capture the confident spirit of the time”. Some compared the concept to his acclaimed transformation of the Reichstag in Berlin; others thought it would be more appropriate for a conference centre in Essex. Continue reading...

Can DuckDuckGo replace Google search while offering better privacy?
The alternative search engine markets itself on protecting users’ privacy, but is it worth using? So is DuckDuckGo no good? Surprised you did not mention it. MurrayFollowing last week’s article about privacy and surveillance capitalism, several readers wrote in about the absence of DuckDuckGo, and it was mentioned a dozen times in the comments. I have suggested this privacy-oriented search engine a few times since 2012, and I think it’s worth a go. However, I’m answering Murray’s earlier query along the same lines because I can use his email verbatim rather than cobbling together a joint question from multiple sources. Continue reading...

The Women’s Equality party has taken on abuse in Westminster – and won | Mandu Reid
The party I lead has proved that politicians have a mandate to do right by women. It’s up to all of us to hold them to thatAs people go to the ballot box today in one of the most important UK elections in recent history, you might expect the leader of a political party to be obsessively checking the polls. I am not doing that. That’s because I am in a unique position – as the leader of the Women’s Equality party, I can proudly say that we have already won. That’s not to say that we are happy with predictions about the overall outcome of the election, or the toxicity and polarisation that has infected our politics. Nor have we won in terms of seats; although we are still running three amazing candidates and hope they do well, for us this election has never been simply about vote share. We have won because we campaigned with the aim of moving the issue of violence against women and girls up the political agenda – and we have succeeded in making every other party take notice. Continue reading...
