Spacewatch: ESA awards first junk clean-up contract
Space agency commissions €100m ClearSpace project after competitive bid processClearSpace-1 is planned for launch in 2025 and will be the first mission to remove an item of space debris from orbit. After a competitive bid process, the European Space Agency has awarded a service contract to a consortium led by the Swiss startup company ClearSpace, which is staffed by space debris experts from the École polytechnique fedérale de Lausanne (EPFL) research institute. The service contract model is a different way of working on missions for ESA. Usually the agency takes an active role in defining how a mission works. In this instance, however, it is paying ClearSpace to remove a piece of space junk but not specifying how that should be done. In this way, ESA is hoping to stimulate a commercial market for comparatively low-cost space debris removal. Continue reading...

General election 2019: exit poll due at 10pm as final hour of voting under way – live news
Exit poll, first results and the biggest winners and losers after Britain votes in the ‘most important poll in a generation’As they happen: full election results trackerHour-by-hour guide to election nightA to Z of election night jargon 9.18pm GMT Good evening and welcome to the general election results blog. The polls close in just under an hour, at 10pm, and at that point broadcasters will announce the results of the combined BBC/ITV/Sky exit poll. We will then have to wait a few more hours to find out if the results are confirming the exit poll predictions but, over the last four elections, it has twice predicted the size of the eventual majority with 100% accuracy, once been out by four seats, and once wrong by 22 seats (in 2015). Generally it is a much more robust, and accurate, exercise than a standard opinion poll. And so at that point we will get the first proper steer of the day into whether Boris Johnson has achieved his goal and obtained a working majority. If there is a consensus Westminster/commentariat expectation, this would be it. It is what the bookmakers are anticipating, and the one opinion poll (rightly or wrongly) seen as most authoritative, the YouGov MRP poll, has the Conservatives on course to win a majority of 28. But, in truth, there is no firm consensus and the 2017 general election result – which came as a total surprise not just to journalists, but to most campaigners, even at the very top of political parties, on all sides – has left most of us who follow elections very wary of making any predictions with much confidence. Bournemouth need fresh ideas from Eddie Howe to arrest an alarming slump | Eni Aluko
His side look as if they are still trying to do what worked a couple of season ago but now other teams are doing it betterBournemouth have lost their last five games and won only one of 11 since mid-September and, given their form and their position a point off the bottom three, for the first time since their promotion in 2015 they look in genuine danger of relegation. This weekend they visit Chelsea, another difficult fixture in a season unexpectedly full of them, and despite Chelsea’s habit of letting their opponents back into games towards the end, it would be a surprise if Bournemouth broke their bad run at Stamford Bridge.I saw them at Crystal Palace this month and was shocked by how flat their performance was. They did not seem to have any idea how to create chances. They played a 4-4-2 with Callum Wilson and Dominic Solanke up front and, even though Palace went down to 10 men early on, Eddie Howe did not seem to make any tactical change to adopt a more attacking approach. They did not look as if they were going to score at all until towards the end, when they abandoned their principles out of desperation and started pumping the ball into the box. Continue reading...
