Fifth Of Areas Have Rising Covid Cases As Warm Weekend Stokes Fears Of Rule-Breaking
The UK government has warned Covid-19 infections are rising in some parts of the country despite the success of the vaccine roll-out.At a Downing Street press conference on Friday, health secretary Matt Hancock said one in five local authority areas has seen a rise in cases in the last week. And in a “sobering warning”, England’s deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam said there were “quite a few areas of the UK that are burning hot”.He added “this battle is not won” and urged the public: “Do not wreck this now.”Asked if the rising infections in some areas could mean the government reintroduces local lockdowns when the national lockdown ends, Hancock said: “These regional disparities are smaller than we saw in the autumn. We don’t rule out taking local action in an individual area if we see a spike, but the goal is for us all to come out together.”This is a breaking news story and will be updated. EU states back plan to expose big companies' tax avoidance
Majority of member states back proposal to bring in country-by-country tax reportingThe EU has moved to force multinational companies to publish a breakdown of the tax they pay in each of the bloc’s member states and in tax havens such as Seychelles, piling pressure on the UK government to follow suit.Country-by-country reporting is designed to shine a light on how some of the world’s biggest companies – such as Apple, Facebook and Google – avoid paying an estimated $500bn (£358bn) a year in taxes by shifting their profits from higher-tax countries such as the UK, France and Germany to zero-tax or low-tax jurisdictions including Ireland, Luxembourg and Malta. Warmth, coaching, communication: how Tuchel got Chelsea purring again
Manager has brought more lightness and laughter since replacing Lampard but has shown ruthlessness tooThe ink on Thomas Tuchel’s contract was still drying when Chelsea’s manager got down to business. The German had arrived in a whirl, rushing to London the day after Frank Lampard’s ruthless sacking, but he had a team to knock into shape. The 47-year-old knew that Chelsea, who had given him an 18-month deal with an option for another year, do not like being made to wait for success. The pressure was there from the start, growing when Tuchel went with experience over youth against Wolves and drew 0-0. Continue reading...
