Great British Bake Off's Prue Leith Gets Real About Past Use Of LSD
Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has spoken candidly about her past drug use, admitting that the one time she tried LSD, it put her off for life.In an interview with LBC, set to air on Sunday night at 9pm, Prue revealed that she tried the hallucinogenic drug when she was in her twenties, but said it was a “horrific” experience for her.“It was the sixties, there were a lot of drugs around,” she explained. “We [Prue and her first husband, author Rayne Kruger] used to smoke a bit of pot, not all the time and not a lot, but we did.“And one day, we did take acid, only once, and I must tell you, it was the most appalling experience I’ve ever had.”Describing her hallucinations while on LSD, Prue recalled: “I had absolute horrific hallucinations. I couldn’t look at [Ray] because he turned into a kind of monster, and my arms, the flesh dripped off them. There was just bones left.“It just shows what an extraordinary imagination I must have.”Prue went on to say that she still suffered flashbacks and nightmares even almost 40 years later, saying: “I’d have nightmares. And when I woke up, nothing would look like I knew it ought to look.“It would be wobbly or strange or growing and sinking and shrinking and expanding. And right until, I suppose, my sixties, I would still sometimes wake up in the night and, I felt like I could see the air, you know?” Prue joined Bake Off in 2017, when the show made the jump to Channel 4.She is currently appearing in her third series of the hit baking show, which was filmed over the summer, with cast and crew all isolating together in a “Bake Off bubble”.MORE BAKE OFF: Matt Lucas' Boris Johnson Skit On The Great British Bake Off Attracts Ofcom Complaints One Bake Off Contestant Had An Absolute Nightmare Of A First Show Bake Off Execs Detail 'Massive Sacrifice' Team Made To Ensure This Year's Series Happened

Why fatherhood has suddenly all gone père shaped for me | Ed Cumming
France is doubling paternity leave – which will make us hapless British fathers even more neurotic about our parentingLiberté, égalité, paternité: the dastardly French are at it again. They’ve always known how to hit us when we’re down. In the same week that Michael Gove announced plans to cede Kent to the EU, President Macron said he was doubling paternity leave. From July next year, new fathers in France will get 28 days off, seven of which will be mandatory, making it one of the more generous schemes in Europe. Macron said parents should have “more equality in sharing the responsibility from day one”. British fathers get just two optional weeks. The French president doesn’t have children of his own, and I expect most leaders in that position would think it was enough simply to offer the paid leave. But Macron, canny as ever, knows that if presented with the option of a paid week with their newborn, many partners would prefer to go to the office for free. Continue reading...

Faith Healer review – this virtual Friel is the stuff of miracles
Old Vic, LondonMichael Sheen, Indira Varma and David Threlfall are magnificent in Matthew Warchus’s enthralling livestreamed production of Brian Friel’s 1979 playDoes faith healing come about thanks to the faith of the healer, or the faith of the healed, or through faith in faith itself? This question haunts “the fantastic Francis Hardy, Faith Healer, One Night Only”, as his publicity poster presents him; it troubles his wife, Grace, and perplexes Teddy, his manager. Brian Friel’s 1979 play places the audience, too, in a state of doubt. Over the course of four separate soliloquies, these three characters build conflicting impressions of their relationships and their village hall tours of Wales and Scotland. Their slippery accounts do not tally. Only a few features hold firm: place names, a couple of events – and the act of questioning. Are the characters misremembering or deliberately misleading? Who and what should – can – we believe, or believe in?In our own destabilising times, the Old Vic’s “scratch” production is itself an expression of faith – part of a season of performances played on stage before an empty auditorium and simultaneously livestreamed to an audience that must pay to Zoom in. Given how much recorded work is being put online free, will people find sufficient added value in being connected with performers in time although not in space? Will they stump up for tickets? Continue reading...
