Sandi Morris: 'You have to pretend like the Olympics is going forward'
The Olympic pole vault silver medalist talks about creating her own competitive opportunities amid the pandemic and the challenges of staying motivated for Tokyo 2021Like everyone else, Sandi Morris was left no choice but to shelve her plans when the coronavirus pandemic took hold and the Tokyo Olympics were postponed. The Olympic pole vault silver medalist and American indoor record holder was forced to get creative over the past year as the sport halted to a standstill. With her training facilities at the University of Arkansas shut down for nine months, Morris moved back to her parents’ house in South Carolina and constructed a homemade regulation pole-vault setup with 120ft runway in the neighborhood. With no competitions on the horizon and no prize or appearance money coming in, she held a virtual garage sale of old meet-worn gear and memorabilia to help make ends meet. For every problem, a solution. Continue reading...

Andy Serkis: ‘I used to walk on all fours preparing to be Gollum’
The actor, 56, on growing up in Ruislip and Baghdad, becoming famous in Lord of the Rings and falling in love with mountaineeringI grew up in a combination of suburban Catholic Ruislip and Baghdad. My mum, who is 50% Iraqi, lived in Baghdad with my three older sisters until I was born. My father, who was a doctor and 100% Iraqi, stayed in Baghdad to build a hospital, but we used to go and visit every summer. I’ve never been a typical Iraqi. My mum brought us up to think of ourselves as British. My last memory of going to church was on Christmas Eve, when I’d had one too many advocaats and I ended up walking up the aisle with a kebab to take communion and being told to leave. That was pretty much it for me. From that point on, religion seemed a bit pointless. Continue reading...

A history of the hedgerow and a love letter to weeds: the best books to celebrate spring
Whether you are after a novel or informative non-fiction, hope and renewal are in the air at last, writes Lia LeendertzSpring is on its way. Daylight hours will lengthen over the next few weeks and soon we will find ourselves standing outside at 5.30pm and saying: “It’s light!” Birdsong will increase, blossom will burst out across the countryside and our gardens, and everything will start to feel a little more hopeful. This is a good time to immerse yourself in a book about the natural world, to remind yourself that no matter what else is going on, spring will spring. As hedgerows come into leaf and blossom, pick up a copy of A Natural History of the Hedgerow by John Wright. The book is a dive into the natural and human history of this almost entirely British phenomenon; as Wright says in his introduction, aliens visiting Britain would quickly notice our coast to coast network of hedges and fields and perhaps presume that the whole population must be involved in tending them – and that, not that long ago, they would have been right. Bicep: Live Global Stream II review – 90 minutes of pure throwback pleasure
Saatchi Gallery, London; live streamMarking the release of their acclaimed second album, Isles, the duo transmit a steady stream of rapturous, 21st-century rave nostalgia into living rooms around the worldThe laptop screen pulsates with images of hands in lurid colours that distort and repeat ad infinitum. The retro neon graphics of Bicep’s live stream announcement gradually give way to elegant organic visuals; these in turn form stark, generative abstracts. The Bicep logo – think Manx flag – appears inside a rolling circle within another rolling circle, like a psychedelic geometry assignment whose equation is just out of reach. From time to time these retina-searing visuals ebb away, leaving behind reality: two black-clad men facing each other in an empty white room. Gear is laid out before them symmetrically. We are in London’s Saatchi Gallery, but the walls are bare. Bicep are supplying all the art: a luminous, 21st-century spin on 90s rave music, given go-faster stripes by their long-time graphics team Black Box Echo. (“Gallery temporarily closed”, reads a sign under spooky flickering lights.) Continue reading...
