Network Rail's sale of arches attacked

Network Rail's £1.5 billion sale of thousands of railway arches overlooked the interests of tenant businesses renting the spaces and may not have been good value for the public purse, a critical report from MPs said on Friday.

Fridge-hiding, the final frontier in election WTF-ery | Marina Hyde
The prime minister now has something in common with honey, potatoes and avocadosWe begin with a fact-check. This general election campaign has officially been going on since around the mid-cretaceous period. Its final day saw an update to the list of things you shouldn’t keep in the fridge, with the likes of honey, potatoes and avocados now joined by “the UK prime minister”. All the party leaders embarked on a frantic cross-country campaigning dash on Wednesday, but only one of them … no, I’m sorry. I can’t face it yet. Give it a minute. At dawn, Boris Johnson embarked on a sort of softcore Confessions of a Prime Minister tour, which by 10am had already seen him dress up as a milkman, then pop something in someone’s oven. What next? Pool boy? Cable guy? At this rate of innuendo it seemed reasonable to assume Johnson would simply be barebacking grateful activists live on the lunchtime news. Of course, his version of all this does subvert the classic porn trope. Traditionally, it’s a blue-collar guy coming to the suburban professional’s house while he’s out at work. In this case, it’s an old Etonian milkman knocking on the door of working-class homes. Someone’s certainly going to get screwed, but not in a sexual way. Continue reading...

Enzo Maresca’s stock rising at West Ham with Manuel Pellegrini close to sack
• Second assistant coach masterminded shock win over Chelsea• Italian could take temporary charge if Pellegrini departsWest Ham’s shock victory against Chelsea last month was masterminded by Enzo Maresca, with the club’s second assistant coach taking over training from Manuel Pellegrini in the lead-up to the game.Pellegrini normally devises West Ham’s tactics and the manager is likely to be sacked if his team are beaten for the eighth time in 10 matches when they visit Southampton on Saturday. Bayern Munich v Tottenham Hotspur: Champions League – live!
Champions League updates from the 8pm GMT kick-offFollow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTubeAnd feel free to email Paul or tweet him @Paul_Doyle 7.05pm GMT Bayern: Neuer; Pavard, Martinez, Boateng, Davies; Alcantara, Kimmich, Coutinho; Coman, Gnabry, Perisic Subs: Ulreich, Goretzka, Singh, Müller, Mai, Lewandowski, Zirkzee 4.57pm GMT Hello. This is one of those matches that existentialist philosophers love. You are free to give it your own meaning. In competition terms, it is absurd: Bayern have already qualified for the next stage as group winners, and Spurs have already got there as runners-up. But the teams are here and so are we, so let’s make it matter. Express yourselves, players! Express yourself, reader! Actually, the game does carry at least a little jeopardy, especially for Bayern. They come into it on the back of two domestic defeats and they are not the kind of club who can tolerate a third straight loss, especially not to a side whom they whupped 7-2 a couple of months ago. That was a different Tottenham, though, one led by a Mauricio Pochettino nearing the end of his tether. Now José Mourinho has the reins and it will be a matter of pride to him to show some improvement. You might think improving on a 7-2 defeat will be a doddle, but canny Mourinho has introduced an extra element of intrigue by leaving a load of first-teamers in London, including Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier, along with the injured Hugo Lloris, Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Erik Lamela. So expect some lesser-spotted faces to get a look-in today. It’s a pity for Spurs’ U-19s that they had to play Bayern’s U-19s earlier today (result: 3-0 to Bayern), otherwise they might have got a run-out against the senior side here. It’s on! Continue reading...

Saudi Aramco will soon be worth $2tn but it looks plainly overvalued | Nils Pratley
International investors doubting its true value are unlikely to be wowed by a stage-managed price inflationHere is a safe prediction: Saudi Aramco will soon formally be worth $2tn (£1.5tn), the valuation reputedly craved by the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman. It could happen by the end of this week. One can forecast this event with reasonable confidence for two reasons. First, Aramco’s shares rose by 10%, the maximum permitted, on the first day of trading, so the company’s valuation has already advanced from $1.7tn to nearly $1.9tn. There’s only a short hop to go. Germany's dialect iron curtain still divides the country, study finds
Linguists find use of vernacular expressions aligning east-west 30 years after Berlin Wall fell Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, an invisible border running through Germany continues to resist all efforts to make the country truly whole again. However, this dividing line is not about attitudes to democracy, refugees or Russia, but something more elementary: how to tell the time.In the northern half of the old West Germany, from Flensburg in the north down to Heidelberg in the south, people use the expression viertel nach zehn (“quarter past ten”) if their clock reads 10.15. Yet in a tract of land that covers the old socialist GDR as well as parts of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, the same time would be described as viertel elf or “quarter eleven”. Continue reading...

Champions League’s full English another staging post in march of the superclubs | Barney Ronay
For the third year in a row four Premier League clubs are in the last 16, with Manchester City perhaps the most likely winnersWell, fancy seeing you here. For all the pep and vim, the high-energy caffeine-football combinations of Red Bull Salzburg, there was a feeling of certainty about Liverpool’s progress to the last 16 of the Champions League. The ability of Jürgen Klopp’s team to win even when the opposition brings its A-game has been a feature of the season. A simple explanation, beyond luck and “LiVARpool” conspiracy theory, is that their base levels are just so high. This is a team of extreme qualities: physical strength, speed, attacking skills. They have more ways to win, more ways to wear you down, like a heavyweight champ who can dawdle through five rounds and still produce at any stage that lights-out right-hander. Continue reading...
