The Celebrity Circle: blockbuster TV on a par with early Big Brother
With a cast compiled by throwing a dart at a ‘Who Will Do Absolutely Anything?’ board, the show threatens to be messier and more backstabby than everChannel 4 already knows that The Circle is an incredible TV format. The problem is that not quite enough of the rest of us have realised that yet. That’s why C4 has folded the show (briefly: a group of people in a block of Instagram-neat apartments compete to be liked via a clunky in-house social media app; they can either be their boring selves or someone more interesting; there is absolutely no benefit to pretending to be someone else, only the constant risk of being found out; for some reason this medium inspires a lot of very bizarre flirting) into its annual Stand Up to Cancer output, because here is a worthy platform for blockbuster reality telly on a par with the Big Brother of yore. War brides, spies and burning bookshops: Marina Warner on writing her memoir
Famous for her study of fairytales, what happened when Warner decided to tell her own story? She talks about the remarkable family legends behind her ‘unreliable’ memoirPandemic conditions meant I couldn’t visit Marina Warner, but I’ve been to her house, in London, once before, and I’ll try to remember it for you because it hums with enchantment. First you must open the wicket gate off the street, brushing past clambering plants to reach the front door. Inside, you climb a slim staircase. The walls are crammed with art, and you’ll want to pause and look: there’s a little Paula Rego that shows the householder reading a story to an entranced wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, a reference to Warner’s lifelong study of fairytales and myths and her role too as a storyteller, author of novels and stories and children’s books. Over a door is a wooden sculpture by her son, the artist Conrad Shawcross, called The Winnowing Oar – a pun on the prophecy given to Homer’s Odysseus that he must wander until he meets a community who mistake an oar for a winnowing fan. Then you duck into the sitting room, where there’s more art and teetering towers of books – at one moment when I was there Graeme Segal, Warner’s third husband (an Oxford mathematician so distinguished that his name is attached to both a theorem and a conjecture), put out a steadying hand to prevent a collapse. The room vibrates to a steady babble of chat – friends, grandchildren, teenagers – and in the centre of it all, benignly smiling, serene and immensely elegant, Warner herself. That day she told me about two of her Italian aunts, who began with the poetic names Annunziata and Purissima, and became, when they emigrated to America, prosy Nancy and Pat. She told me too about her late cousin Andy Cicoria, who looked rather like her, but was a homicide detective in the LAPD, leading me to the loopy but enjoyable fantasy that maybe she and he were the same person, that Warner might be scintillating mythographer by day and hardboiled Californian crime fighter by night. A year to the day after the pandemic sent me back home from university, George Floyd’s killer goes on trial. It has been 12 months of upheaval, unrest and inspirationAt 9.52pm on 8 March 2020, my university sent out an email telling students that we would start our spring break a week early because of a potential Covid-19 case on campus. What they couldn’t tell us right then is that over the course of the two weeks, I’d fly home to Minnesota, fly back to campus in New York to move out and fly back home to finish classes in my family home. Donald Trump Finds It 'Kind Of Freeing' Being Off Twitter, His Former Press Secretary Claims
Former White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany claims ex-President Donald Trump is now actually “doing just fine” without social media.Trump railed against and desperately tried to circumvent his bans from multiple social media platforms — which for years he used to spread conspiracy theories, amplify lies, sow division and attack enemies ― after he was booted for inciting the deadly U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6.But McEnany, a newly-minted contributor for Fox News, on Friday told Fox Business’ Stuart Varney that Trump now finds it “kind of freeing.”“He said it was kind of freeing not to have Twitter. He had a lot of time on his hands. So I think he’s doing just fine without social media,” she said.Social media users were skeptical about McEnany’s claim, given her history of lying on behalf of Trump and the ex-president’s well-documented love for Twitter in particular.Twitter permanently banned Trump from his favorite platform in the wake of the insurrection. Facebook’s oversight board is due soon to rule on the possible reinstatement of Trump’s account. YouTube said Thursday it will lift Trump’s suspension once the risk of offline violence has diminished.McEnany, in an apparent contradiction to her earlier comments, then pivoted to the right-wing talking point of so-called “cancel culture.”“What a travesty, this cancel culture, this root someone out of the public square,” she told Varney, saying the bans weren’t about stopping violence but “about stopping Trump.”Related...Self-Proclaimed Billionaire Trump Now Begging Small-Dollar Donors For MoneyDonald And Melania Trump Quietly Received Covid-19 Vaccine In January: Reports
