Steve McQueen To Follow Success Of Small Axe With Uprising, Another Film Series For BBC
Steve McQueen is to follow his hugely successful Small Axe series with a new project for the BBC.Last year, the Oscar-winning director and producer helmed five films for BBC One, focussing on the lives of West Indian immigrants in London between the 1960s and 1980s.It was announced on Tuesday morning that McQueen is to oversee a new three-part film series, titled Uprising, which will explore three major events that took place in 1981. The first of these films – set to air on BBC One later this year – will centre around the New Cross fire tragedy, which killed 13 Black teenagers in January 1981.Following this will be a film about the Black People’s Day Of Action march, a demonstration six weeks after the New Cross fire which saw 20,000 people protesting to demand justice for the victims of the tragedy and insist that the establishment listen to the Black community. The final film will centre around the 1981 Brixton riots, with a BBC press release explaining that Uprising will go into detail about “how these three events intertwined [...] and how, in the process, race relations were defined for a generation”.Steve McQueen has said of Uprising: “It is an honour to make these films with testimonials from the survivors, investigators, activists and representatives of the machinery of state.“We can only learn if we look at things through the eyes of everyone concerned; the New Cross fire passed into history as a tragic footnote, but that event and its aftermath can now be seen as momentous events in our nation’s history.”McQueen’s most recent offering, Small Axe, was lauded by critics upon its debut in December 2020, with John Boyega winning a Golden Globe for his role in the film Red, White And Blue.John Boyega, Shaun Parkes, Letitia Wright, Malachi Kirby and Micheal Ward have all been nominated for TV Baftas for their performances in the anthology series. The New Cross Fire and the events that followed formed a pivotal part of the fourth film in Small Axe, Alex Wheatle, which starred Sheyi Cole in the title role.READ MORE:‘13 Dead, Nothing Said’: How The New Cross Fire March Redefined Racial Inequality In BritainSmall Axe, I May Destroy You, Adult Material And The Crown Lead TV Bafta Nominations'It Gave Us A Sense Of Identity': Lovers Rock Stars On The Soft Reggae Soundtrack Of Small Axe

The Life of Music review – pushing at the boundaries of the classical canon
Nicholas Kenyon’s wide-ranging survey of the development of western music is packed with his passion for the subjectQuestions thunder down on anyone who writes about music. How to describe abstract sounds in words is the first hurdle. Once every synonym for loud, soft, fast, slow has been exhausted, where next? While the story of a composer’s life is a helpful way in for most of us, others bang their spoons for hermeneutics. Until well into this century, volumes described as “a history of music” habitually began with the births of Bach and Handel in 1685 and petered out around Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (1913), thus bookending the music most audiences expected to hear in concerts. As for female composers, apart from Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn, they did not exist. We have moved backwards and beyond, though with some resulting confusion. Check out the current muddle in university music faculties: is musical notation elitist? (No, yes, don’t know.) Can hip-hop be studied? (Yes. Oxford has had an optional module for a while.) Nicholas Kenyon’s The Life of Music, a project long in gestation that he completed during the pandemic of 2020, generously embraces all, reminding us that “western music” began some four centuries before Bach and introducing us to composers, several of them women, born in the 1980s. The transformative power of digital music is central to his story. So, too, is that vital, ever-changing relationship between composer and performer: notes on the page are only the starting point. Readers give their verdict on AO.com’s customer service
We follow up a complaint from a customer who was let down over a faulty Hotpoint fridge-freezerThanks to all of the readers who answered last week’s call for feedback on buying electrical appliances from AO.com. There were plenty of positive experiences from readers who had made multiple purchases. These included some who had problems which had been resolved. However, a considerable number reported a similar experience to the original writer, and said they’d felt the company just wanted to palm the matter off on the manufacturer. But it seems more readers recommend the service than don’t.Just remember the contract to supply the item is with the retailer (in this case AO.com) and not the manufacturer – and it is up to the former to sort out problems. Why China and east Asia’s ageing population threatens global Covid recovery
Analysis: Beijing’s census data confirms trend reflected across a region that is looked to as engine of post-pandemic growthFull report: China’s population growing at slowest rate in generationsFor many years China watchers have been concerned that its ageing population will slow economic growth, causing social as well as political problems. So today’s census data may be an alarm bell for leaders in Beijing. But it is not just China that is witnessing this trajectory. Most countries in east Asia, even without fertility control policies such as China’s one-child or two-child policies, share the same predicament: how to continue economic growth while encouraging people to have more children?
