On the first day of ... Australian family finds live koala in their Christmas tree

When the McCormicks came home on Wednesday, the Christmas tree in their Adelaide house had acquired a new ornament

The McCormicks went for a silver, pink and blue theme on their Christmas tree. The old plastic leaves were worn but looked beautiful with baubles on each branch and twinkling lights.

But this year the family tree included one very unexpected ornament: a wild – and somewhat confused – juvenile koala.

How Trump made race-bating the new normal
Even though many of us Lefties wept with joy when Obama won, he didn’t actually affect our lives in any meaningful way. Then came along Donald Trump. He didn’t so much  touch us, as grab us by the… My own career and psychology have been hugely shaped by this man-baby meets frat-boy meets political thug. As a broadcaster, I confess, Trump was good for business. TV stations needed hours of analysis. I was lucky enough to be snapped up by CNN International as a pundit and this led to me being booked on lots of other shows.

Ethnic minorities are four times more likely to die: vaccinate them first
As Nadhim Zahawi, the vaccine deployment minister, often says, we are engaged in “a race against death”. This is not political hyperbole. Though the vaccination roll-out has made an encouraging start, its supply-chain is still fragile; its distribution uneven (as Sadiq Khan has had cause to complain on London’s behalf); its infrastructure incomplete; and the numbers of jabs administered per day still insufficient, if the Government is to achieve its ambition to offer the first dose before February 15 to all 14 million people in the top four priority groups.

I split with my partner after he lied about using porn – have I overreacted?
We were together for 13 years and planned to move in together. But now I feel I can no longer trust himDuring lockdown last May, I split from my partner of 13 years. We had been planning to get married and live together. He took me house-hunting, then moved into the place we found, while I stayed where I was with my daughter, who has disabilities. We worked on the house and garden together and he kept telling me it was our home. He then retired and we carried on our weekend, distanced relationship. But his behaviour changed, and I discovered that he had been indulging in a lot of porn since long before I met him. He had always claimed not to be interested in it. I was not concerned about the porn, but about the deceit. He had looked me in the eye and lied when I confronted him. Trust became a major issue. I suggested we went to counselling but he refused. I miss the friendship – I thought we were soulmates – but don’t think I could put up with the idea that he is always looking elsewhere. We are still in touch by phone. Was I overreacting or should I cut all ties and move on? Continue reading...
